Howard Chapman, Editor, writes:
Sustainability and environmental concerns are driving a high
proportion of new product development in the building industry. This
is fuelled in part by increasing demands from new legislation. The
government recognises that with half of CO2 emissions in the UK coming
from the built environment, it holds the key to change that will
enable it to reach its ambitious environmental targets. A typical
example is that all commercial buildings being built, sold or rented,
must, by law, now have an Energy Performance Certificate, a top A
grading being for the most efficient in both energy consumption and
low CO2 emissions.
Speaking at Think 08 last week, Hilary Benn, Secretary of
State for Environment, said he is asking energy companies to help
foot the bill to further improve the energy performance of existing
stock. He praised the progress being made and said how the UK
construction industry is at the forefront of reducing waste and
developing innovative products.
Another key dynamic is the industry's own commitment to reducing waste
at all levels of the supply chain and to green procurement. For
example, Jewson, is promoting industry-wide waste-reduction targets.
Product stories on Buildingtalk this week exemplified the importance
of sustainability in building. Dimplex reminded us that grants of up
to 50% are now available to the public sector for the installation of
microgeneration technologies, including its successful ground source
heat pumps. Masterblock tells us about its lightweight aggregate
blocks with recycled material content. Mighton's Ecotilt has become
the UK's first timber sliding sash window to achieve a BFRC 'A'
rating for energy efficiency. Passivent has developed a solution that
combines natural ventilation and comfort cooling for offices, shopping
centres, schools and hospitals.
Buildingtalk has always provided a platform for new products and
innovations that contribute to sustainability. Next month we are
sending out a special Buildingtalk advertising EXTRA devoted to the
subject. This will go to all our newsletter subscribers. If you want
to be a part of this, I can send you details. In any case, if you have
an eco product or service, do send details for inclusion on the
Buildingtalk website - the most-read website in the industry, with
around 400k visitors this month reading more than two million pages.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In
addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are
hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do
take a look if you can.
Send your comments or suggestions about the website, or the
newsletter, by email, or have your say on the Buildingtalk blog - post
your comments at: http://www.buildingtalk.com/blog.
Best wishes

towards the targets put forward during the debate, by agreeing to help
Jewson and Saint-Gobain Building Distribution (SGBD) meet their own
