A Triple Crown Winner in 2008?

Prior to the Kentucky Derby, you are typically required to lay about $1000 to win $100 on a “no” bet that there will be a Triple Crown Winner. Based on historic win rates, that’s probably about right.

Now that the favorite won the Derby (we picked the three-year-old Big Brown), and won from the 20th post by an sizable margin, the odds have dropped considerably.

PIMLICO Race #(TEN) THE MARYLAND LOTTERY PIMLICO SPECIAL(G1) (4:40 PM Eastern)

(# 2) GOTTCHA GOLD - Take away his lone effort on polytrack, which came two starts back at Santa Anita and you have a runner who has reached "triple digit" figures in four consecutive races. He's won three of those and in the other ran second to "Corinthian" in the innaugural running of the "Breeders Cup Dirt Mile" last October at Monmouth. Working well in Florida before shipping here, he should be tracking presumed pace-setters, "Ryan's For Real" and "Wanderin Boy."

(# 4) A.P.Arrow - Returned recently from Dubai where he finished fourth to "Curlin" in the "Dubai World Cup" on March 29. Top-class runner has worked sharply twice at Belmont since returning, so he looks non-the-worse for wear.

(# 7) Grasshopper - Solid since last August, he has proven that he can run with top-class competition. His two-turn record is outstanding (6-3-3-0) and the one-turn nature of the recent "Westchester" where he finished second is not his "bag."

(# 6) Wanderin boy - Beaten to the top in the recent "Alysheba" hdcp. the day before the Derby. He rated kindly and rallied nicely in mid-stretch, only to flatten out late. Needs to avoid a tussle with the rail runner, but he just might be quicker than that rival.
