Biblical perspectives on contemporary cinema
Friday, May 16, 2008
There's a scene in Prince Caspian—which opened in theaters at 12:01 this morning—where the title character confronts his evil uncle, King Miraz. Caspian has sword in hand, and Miraz is unarmed, defenseless.
I won't tell you what happens next, but I will say what I hope to see on the DVD bloopers reel someday. I want to see Ben Barnes, who plays Caspian, stand with his blade ready and, in his best Spanish accent, shout these words:
"Hello! My name is Prince Caspian! You killed my father. Prepare to die!"
And then I want to see everybody on the set cracking up while director Andrew Adamson yells, through his own laughter, "Cut!"
Might never see it, but it could have happened. Barnes, a Brit with wit, had to use a quasi-Spanish accent for the film—an invented dialect for the race of Telmarines who were ruling Narnia at the time. For his audition, Barnes modeled his speech after perhaps the most well-known English speaking "Spaniard" in movie history—Inigo Montoya of The Princess Bride, as played so memorably by Mandy Patinkin.
That was just one of the things I learned in an interview with Barnes, a bright 26-year-old with such a lively sense of humor, he could consider a second career as a stand-up comic. Check out our conversation here.
Finally, you'll certainly want to know what we thought of the film itself; check out Peter T. Chattaway's review here. (And if you missed any of our other Caspian coverage, see our special section here.)
Also new this week: Reel News notes that Prince Caspian fever has hit the Web in full force. Finally, let us know about your Caspian plans, if any, in our weekly poll.
See you at the movies,
