Our Historic Opportunity

The Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act is a vital step forward in our fight to stop global warming. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has scheduled a floor vote in early June.

Right now, about 40 Senators support the bill. There is a pool of another 20 undecided swing Senators who will be key in winning this historic vote.

Environmental Defense Action Fund is working to find the votes and to strengthen, protect and pass the bill to put the Senate on record in favor of a strong policy to cap and reduce America's global warming pollution.

Our Campaign

Over the next few weeks, the Environmental Defense Action Fund team is:

• Working with Senate leaders to ensure that as the Climate Security Act moves to the floor, carbon reduction targets are not weakened.
• Working on the ground in key states to win over swing Senators and keep the pressure on.
• Keeping the phone banks going to maintain constituent pressure on Senate offices to vote with us.
• Buying tv, print and online ads to keep this critical issue in front of the public eye and to keep our leaders focused on the need to act.
• Continuing to build our online constituency and mobilizing them through action alerts and other channels.

In securing these votes, we face many obstacles, particularly the deep pockets of powerful special interest lobbyists like Big Coal and the National Association of Manufacturers.

We also face sham global warming bills, like the one recently proposed by Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) that would allow global warming pollution to increase for decades.
