Wager on Faith
Hi Raquelle,
We’re midway through May (can you believe it?), and I’m thinking about New Year’s Resolutions. Actually, I’m glad I didn’t make any, because I know my capacity for keeping grand resolutions. It’s about nil. There are things I want to change, but they won’t happen through willpower alone because sometimes I take the path of least resistance.
“Just do it!” Nike has us convinced that’s all it takes. I’m here to tell you they are wrong. For things to change, I need divine intervention.
I also cannot live the life of faith unless it’s in total dependence on Jesus Christ. My good intentions and motivations won’t do it. I can't keep the commandments and follow Jesus’ teachings in my own strength.
What would happen if someone challenged you to live out Jesus' teachings? Could you do it? That's what faces Michael Steel (Randy Travis) one week away from the Academy Awards. His comfortable life as a movie star begins to fall apart as he tries to follow Jesus' words in Matthew 5.
His struggles to follow Jesus' words in Matthew 5 are the basis for the new movie The Wager, now available on DVD. Television favorites Bronson Pinchot, Candace Cameron Bure, and Nancy Stafford co-star in this well-done drama. Watch closely and you'll even see John Hagee.

The Wager - DVD
The Wager
Despite Hollywood bias against his strong faith, Michael Steel (Randy Travis) will soon walk the red carpet as a Best Actor nominee! But in a Job-like wager with God, Satan puts him to the test. Between scandalous media deceptions and seductive co-star temptations, can Michael stand strong for truth when his reputation, marriage, and career are in shambles?
Films from Parables
What stories would Jesus tell if He were teaching today? Some filmmakers adapt His parables to a modern context, others give us a visualization of the places He lived and taught.
Industry Interview
Christians in Cinema: Randy Travis
by Angela Walker
Country music icon Randy Travis’ successful career started over two decades ago in small nightclubs in North Carolina in the early 1980s. Since then, 9 of his albums have gone either gold, platinum, or multi-platinum.
A man who likes to keep learning, Randy entered the acting arena with guest spots on television shows like “Matlock” and Touched by An Angel. He has appeared in more than 20 films, the latest of which is The Wager, just out on DVD. (The picture above is Randy on the set with stuntman Monte Perlin) Altogether, he’s been part of more than 40 film and TV projects.
The production team of The Wager contacted Randy and sent a script for his review. “I really liked the character and thought the story was good. I was intrigued by the idea of someone trying to live out the Sermon on the Mount in the middle of the Hollywood glamor.”
During the production, Randy was reunited with Nancy Stafford, whom he met when he guest-starred on Matlock. “I really enjoyed the cast we had, and the crew was great to work with. I like acting because...

Walden Media: Films Don't Have to be Preachy
by Alonso Duralde
Let me be the first to admit that, on paper, the very idea of production company Walden Media makes me skittish. For one thing, it’s owned by Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz, who’s given lots of money to the Republican Party and to anti-gay causes like Colorado’s Amendment 2. Add to that the fact this mega-rich Christian conservative wants the films to come out of Walden “to be entertaining, but also to be life affirming and to carry a moral message” and all my warning buzzers go off. Dove Review:
"The Wager" is a good example of how you can sometimes take your life for granted. Michael Steele, played by Randy Travis, is a movie star who had it all and was also a good Christian man with good Christian values. In the film, Michael is tested over and over again in his faith. Like Job, he keeps going and keeps his faith in God. This movie is a wonderful example of how faith can guide us through rough situations. The movie has several adult themes including divorce and separation, fighting and also adultery. Due to these themes, this movie is awarded the Dove Seal for ages twelve and up.

Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed

"I saw this film with my family (11 & 13, and 8 months). I wouldn't recommend younger children because of the format of the content. The movie was great, and we'll likely purchase the DVD when it's available, to show in our small group and as a homeschooling resource. I would recommend this to every person who is wanting to seriously approach this topic...TWO THUMBS UP! (one on each hand)" (Edited for length)

The Perfect Stranger - DVD
by Sally Baden
"That was one of the most informative movies I've seen in a long time. My boyfriend and I watched it together and I'm not sure which one of us used the most kleenex! He is going to have his 22 year old daughter watch it and see if it stirs any emotions in her. He and I are Christians and are trying to be led by the Spirit to lead our grown children to Christ. This movie might be just the tool we need. I'm going to order "Another Perfect Stranger" right now. "

The Visitation - DVD
by David Mackey
"Namesake Entertainment and Signal Hill Pictures do it once again, releasing top-notch quality entertainment in a market well-known everywhere for its often at best mediocre films. The film definetly stretches the boundaries of Christian film with its dark and violent nature, but at the same time is exuberating in its pictures of the triumph of good over evil. The acting is solid. The special effects are solid, there is very little to complain about." (Edited for length)
