STUDENTS TAKE OVER CARNEGIE HALL

With talent and, yes, practice, almost anyone can grow up to perform on Carnegie Hall’s stage. Sometimes you don’t even have to grow up. You just have to be one of the lucky 18,000 students participating in LinkUP!, a program of The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall. Now in its 22nd year, LinkUP! teaches basic musical concepts and skills and fosters musical literacy while introducing students to live classical music performances.

 EPIC STORY TELLING

FRI, MAY 16 at 8 PM
Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage

CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Bernard Haitink, Principal Conductor

“a true maestro, a powerful musician”—New York Times

A longtime champion of Shostakovich’s music, Haitink returns to the Fourth Symphony, recognized as one of the composer’s boldest, most politically charged scores. In fact, the political climate of Russia in the 1930s deprived audiences of this stunning symphony (with its Mahler-like outcry) for nearly 25 years.

Pre-concert talk at 7 PM in Stern/Perelman with Ara Guzelimian, Provost and Dean, The Juilliard School.

Tickets start at $38.

HAITINK AND THE MAHLER CONNECTION

“Every conductor, including myself, has a sell-by date,” the Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink recently told the New York Times. But at age 77 Haitink, currently Principal Conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, shows no sign of giving up anytime soon.

THURS, MAY 22 at 8 PM
Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage

THE MET ORCHESTRA
James Levine
, Music Director and Conductor
Jonathan Biss, Piano

“James Levine may just now be at his absolute peak.”
New York Magazine

While Elliott Carter describes the whirlwind of notes and rhythms in his Variations as a “musical expression of experiences anyone living today must have,” Tchaikovsky imagined his dramatic Fourth Symphony as a story, moving from “hard reality with swiftly passing dreams” to “a picture of festive merriment.” Between these two masterworks is Schumann’s single piano concerto, representing nothing more than the composer’s romantic escape into fits of fantasy.

Tickets start at $48.
