Hitachi's Environmental Vision 2025 Plan Aims to Curb 100 Million Tons
of CO2 Emissions

In doing its part to promote environmental preservation and realize a
sustainable society, Hitachi Ltd. announced on December 20, 2007, that
the Hitachi Group has drafted a long-term company plan, called
Environmental Vision 2025, which aims to reduce the amount of carbon
dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with its products by 100 million tons
by fiscal year (FY) 2025.

New Conference to Draw Up Plan to Produce Low-Cost Cellulosic Biofuel

As a joint initiative between government, industry, and academia, the
Bio-fuel Technology Innovation Conference was established by the
Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the
Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and its first meeting was held
on November 21, 2007.

Japanese Venture Company Puts Beneficial Bacteria to Work to Improve
Water Quality

Big Bio Co. of Kumamoto prefecture in Japan, a venture business, has
been engaged in developing products that utilize bacteria (BB bacteria),
such as Bacillus subtilis natto, to improve the environment. Bacillus
subtilis natto is a bacterium that ferments soybeans to natto, a
traditional Japanese food usually eaten for breakfast.

Power Generating Floor Tested at JR Tokyo Train Station

The East Japan Railway Company (JR East) conducted a demonstration
experiment from January 19 to March 7, 2008, at Yaesu North Gate, Tokyo
Station, on a new power-generating floor. Installed at the ticket gate
area, it generates electricity from the vibrations created by passengers
walking through the ticket gates.

MOE Releases New Manual for Self-Assessment of Corporate Environmental
Reports

The Japanese Ministry of the Environment released on December 21, 2007,
a self-assessment manual to enhance the reliability of environmental
reports. The manual explains measures that can be used by corporations
to self-evaluate their environmental reports. In Japan, the Environment
Consideration Law, which came into force on April 1, 2005, requires
corporations to improve on the accuracy and credibility of their
environmental reports.

Hitachi Launches Escalator Line that Operates in Eco-mode

Hitachi Ltd. of Japan started selling its VX Series of escalators on
January 21, 2008, which features advanced functions designed for
improved safety and energy savings so as to be better for both riders
and the environment.
