  Inside: This Week in Autos
Drive through any strip mall in America and you'll almost invariably see a proud array of Pontiac, Dodge, Buick, Ford, Saab and other car dealerships lined up and down the street with their cars outside glistening in the sun. Once upon a time it was a sight to make an industrialist proud but these days one can't help but think "Who's buying these cars?" The pressure on America's auto industry has become exacerbated by the rise in fuel prices, and the number of different U.S.-owned auto brands seems increasingly impractical given modern realities. True, many of the brands have storied histories, customer loyalty and, most important to the car companies, a network of dealerships, but can the car market—domestic or global—really support so many brands, especially when so many share similar platforms and design cues? This week autos reporter Jim Henry looked at which brands he felt are the most in danger and readers voted on the brand they felt should go. More than 1,300 readers voted. Their choice to be voted off the island? Mercury. Elsewhere this week we looked at Toyota's downbeat earnings forecast and test drove the redesigned 2009 Honda Pilot. Enjoy.

It remains to be seen whether Chrysler LLC's "Let's Refuel America" campaign will create an auto industry sensation like "Employee Prices for Everyone," or "Zero-Percent Financing," but the $2.99 per gallon promotion will certainly burn up the airwaves for a while, in an ad campaign, news reports and word-of-mouth. closequote
