May 30 and 31, National Geographic and the National Park Service are hosting the 2008 BioBlitz in the Santa Monica Mountains, California. Teams of naturalists, scientists, and volunteers will |
| explore the park’s 150,000 acres, observing and recording as many species as possible. At the end, they’ll have a catalog of biodiversity in the area—a long list of bugs, plants, animals, birds, and other organisms that live in that environment. Can’t make it to Santa Monica? Create your own backyard BioBlitz! These fun educational activities will teach junior field researchers the skills to observe and record the biodiversity in their communities. |

IN THE NEWS
No Ordinary Geography Teacher
The New York Times recently highlighted the value of geographic education in an unusual way. In a near-historical account, the article describes a class research project of 15 years ago, led by a geography teacher-turned-member of Congress. |
