Q. How can I change the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) quick-complete string?
by John Savill

4.28.08

A. If you open IE and type "ntfaq" into the address bar, then press Ctrl + Enter, the "http://www." and ".com" are automatically added to the text—the result being http://www.ntfaq.com.

You can change the registry to modify the pre-text and post-text additions. Follow these steps:

  1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).
  2. Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar registry key .
  3. Open the Edit menu, and select New, Key.
  4. Enter QuickComplete.
  5. Under the new key, create a String value by entering New, String Value and name it QuickComplete, and press Enter.
  6. Double-click the new value and set it to "www.%s.com" if you want .net to be the default extension, and click OK.
You don't have to restart IE for the change to take effect.

Q. How do I set a Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) country-specific quick-complete string?
by John Savill

4.29.08

A. The Ctrl + Enter combination is great for adding "http://www." and ".com" to the search text already entered. To establish a regional quick-complete string for the Ctrl + Shift + Enter key combination through the GUI, open IE, go to the Tools menu, and select Internet Options. Near the bottom of the Internet Options page is the Appearances section. Click the Languages button. At the bottom of the Language Preference dialog box, enter the suffix for your country, such as ".uk," for the United Kingdom, and click OK.

This quick-complete string is set under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\QuickComplete registry key in the string value ShiftQuickCompleteSuffix. ShiftQuickCompletePrefix is a Dword value that suppresses the "www." at the beginning of the text entered. The Prefix default is 0 to allow adding "www." to the start of the text.

Q. How can I use Dsquery and Dsget to get an object's SID?
by John Savill

4.30.08

A. Dsquery can output many object attributes, including the SID (objectSID). The easiest way is to use a filter query to show the objectsid attribute, as in the following example:

dsquery * -filter "&(objectcategory=user)(samaccountname=john)" -attr objectsid

The return is:

objectsid S-1-5-21-2835294230-785241407-2532694646-1106

You can also use Dsget to get the distinguished name (DN) (I think we do this, check glossary), like the following example:

dsget user "cn=john savill,cn=users,dc=savilltech,dc=net" -sid

The return would be:

sid S-1-5-21-2835294230-785241407-2532694646-1106 dsget succeeded

Q. What is the Windows Vista Feature Pack for Wireless?
by John Savill

5.1.08

A. Windows Server has offered feature packs for a long time. Feature packs add components for improved or additional capabilities. Microsoft describes the Windows Vista Feature Pack for Wireless at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942567/. However, the company isn't offering the feature pack. You must get it from your computer's manufacturer.

The feature pack is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and adds the following features.

  • Bluetooth version 2.1 support
  • Unified Pairing UI
  • Windows Connect Now updates

Q. How do I replace the master boot record on a computer with both Windows Vista and Windows XP?
by John Savill

5.2.08

A. It’s common to have a dual-boot situation in which you have both Vista and XP during testing or transition. The Vista Preinstallation Environment (PE) contains the bootsect.exe tool, which you can use to write Vista or XP master boot records.

An XP master boot record uses the Ntldr-style boot information, whereas a Vista master boot record uses the new Bootmgr format.

To write a Vista master boot record, use the command

bootsect /nt60 [all sys]

To write an XP master boot record, use the command

bootsect /nt52 [all sys]

Use the All switch to update all possible Windows boot volumes master-boot records. The Sys switch updates only the current system partition.

If you have a Vista and XP dual-boot situation and want to eliminate Vista, use the PE

bootsect /nt52 sys

command to put the XP master boot record in place so that the Vista boot information can be removed.

If you do replace the master boot record with the Nt60 version and don't have an Ntldr boot menu option to enable access to XP, you can add access to XP with the following commands:

bcdedit /create {ntldr} /d "Windows XP" bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=c: bcdedit /set {ntldr} path \ntldr bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} /addlast
