MARY MARY MOTHER'S DAY GIFT SONG: Gospel duo helps Colgate-Palmolive=20
send smiles.
-- by Kenya M Yarbrough

*Still looking for that last-minute sentiment for Mom this Mother's=
=20
Day? Gospel duo Mary Mary and the folks at Colgate-Palmolive are=20
offering an option to send a little love to moms via e-mail.=20

They've teamed up for the Colgate "Send her a Colgate Smile"
promotion, featuring an exclusive song from Mary Mary appropriately=20
titled "A Mother's Smile."=20

"We wrote a song and submitted it and they loved it," Mary Mary=20
member Tina Campbell said of finding out about the opportunity to work=20
with Colgate-Palmolive, "and everything just kind of went in fast=20
forward."

After just two and a half weeks, Tina and Erica, sisters that make=
=20
up the platinum-selling duo, wrote and recorded the song, and delivered=20
it to Colgate.

"It was totally appropriate because we have such a great=20
relationship with our mothers and we're mothers ourselves," Tina added.=20
"Mother's Day is an extremely big deal for us."

There are nine siblings of the Campbell household and the two=20
sisters told EUR's Lee Bailey that all the Campbell kids make an effort=20
to be around there mom on Mother's Day.

"It was really great to write an exclusive song for them and it=20
was easy to write because we have the greatest mother ever," Erica=20
claimed.
"She's strong, she loving, she's kind. She's a great example of a woman,=
=20
of a wife, of a mother. So we just thought about her and wrote a song."

Both Tina and Erica said that working on the song came pretty=20
easy; that the words simply flowed from their hearts. Proof of its=20
poignancy came when a friend in the studio came to tears after listening=
=20
to it the first time.

"You can't put everything in a song and sometimes you want to,"=20
Erica said of one of the few challenges the two faced in making the=20
song. "We finally got together and agreed on what we wanted to say. It=20
is a lot about my mom and what we understand a mother to be. One thing=20
that makes a mother wonderful is to be able to take care of their home=20
and do it with grace and elegance and still being strong at the same=20
time. And doing that all with a smile is a challenge, but we had a good=20
example"

Erica vouched that as a mother of a one-year old, wearing a smile=20
doesn't always come easy. Tina, the mom of three young girls, also said=20
that another challenge was finding the time to work on the song.

"The biggest challenge was finding the time to get in the studio,"=
=20
she said. "We're in the middle of recording a record and traveling, so=20
we had this wonderful song, but it was hard finding time to get in and=20
do it and do the radio drops and all the extras."

Still, Tina agreed that coming up the words came easy.=20

"Coming up with the words to talk about great moms who effect=20
children's lives so greatly and help to build incredible human beings -=20
that wasn't at all a challenge," she said. "That is one of the most=20
inspirational things ever. And if you're a songwriter, things that are=20
inspiring help you to pick up a pen and flow easily."

Mary Mary said that they didn't feel pressured about the song,=20
even though it is partly a commercial, basically promoting Colgate,=20
commissioned by the company. The two said that when they create, they=20
don't really get concerned about who is going to make money as the end=20
result or making sure it reaches a particular demographic.

"We don't think that hard when we write," Tina explained. "We're=20
so grateful to God for the gift to be able to do this. And when God has=20
given you a gift, all you have to do is work to perfect it. Once we have=
=20
a small bit of inspiration in writing a song, it's not something that's=20
a challenge, and we try not to consider all those different elements.=20
When you start trying to consider too much of that, sometimes you over=20
think it."

The two basically sat down and asked themselves, "What is the=20
general idea?" and came up with the fact that they are creating a song=20
for mothers; to be inspired; to touch their hearts, and to provide the=20
exact sentiment that people want to say to their mothers on their=20
special day.=20

"We just let it flow," Erica said of the process. "You open you=20
heart and you open your mouth and you just sing and people get it."

Apparently, the execs at Colgate-Palmolive got it right away.=20

"They liked it from the start," Tina said, "but we're extremely=20
hard on ourselves. We're hard on ourselves as writers to make sure we're=
=20
clever, and creative, and original."

And how did it go over with the muse of the piece mom? Tina and=20
Erica said that the song went over quite well with their mom, who simply=
=20
closed her eyes, shook her head slowly, listened intently, and smiled.

To send your mom a smile, go to www.colgate.com/mothersday and get=
=20
the song for free - but you'll need a UPC from a Colgate product before=20
downloading.

In the meantime, Mary Mary is finishing up their latest album=20
called "The Sound," which is expected to hit record stores in August.=20
Plus, the duo will be releasing their own line of bath and body products=
=20
come the New Year. To check out the latest, go to their website at=20
www.mary-mary.com.=20

FINALLY! R KELLY TRIAL SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY: But defense lawyers are=
=20
still trying to delay start.

*After six years of delay after delay, the R. Kelly child=20
pornography trial is finally set to begin today in Chicago.=20

Contributing to the delays were more than 30 pretrial motions, the=
=20
multiple fractures suffered by Judge Vincent Gaughan in a fall from a=20
ladder at home and Kelly's emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix.

The 41-year-old singer is accused of having sex with a 13 or=20
14-year-old girl.=20

Prosecutors say they will build their case around a 15 minute=20
video that purportedly shows Kelly and the girl having sex.

"The prosecution has a case, they just have to prove the person on=
=20
the tape is a child," said Leonard Cavise, DePaul University law=20
professor to Chicago's WLS-TV. "Now when the person who is alleged to be=
=20
on the tape says, 'I'm not on the tape,' they have a pretty high=20
mountain to climb."=20

Unfortunately, that's exactly the mountain prosecutors have=20
staring at them because the alleged victim, now in her 20s, and her=20
parents, plan to testify for ... R. Kelly.

Specifically, the prosecution will have to undermine the testimony=
=20
of the girl by proving she's a liar.

"I think what the prosecution is going to do is bring in lots of=20
people to say that it is her and she (was) 14," Cavise said.=20

Normally child porn cases come to trial rather quickly. But in=20
this instance, since Kelly was originally charged in 2002, as outlined=20
above, there has been a multitude events that caused the ultimate delay=20
in the trial starting until today, if it's not delayed even further=20
because of one last defense motion.=20

Legal experts say that the longer it takes for a case to come to=20
trail, the more difficult it is for the prosecution to win. In this=20
instance, the alleged victim is not only going to testify for the=20
defense, but is no longer a child. As such it will be hard for a jury to=
=20
see her as one since she's now approximately 23 years-old. Also, over=20
time, witness memory fades.

"There is an old saying in the legal trade that a defense case is=20
like fine wine it gets better with age. In this case, it is absolutely=20
true," Cavise added.=20

Note: community activist Najeee Ali, who has consistently protested and=20
agitated against the R. Kelly case, will be in Chicago to cover the case=
=20
for EUR and will file updates as warranted.

FOXY PLEADS GUILTY IN BROOKLYN CASE: Rapper sentenced to time served and=
=20
submitted an apology.=20

*Recent inmate Foxy Brown will avoid more jail time after taking a plea=
=20
deal Thursday in her Brooklyn Blackberry Beatdown case.

The rapper made it to her rescheduled hearing in Brooklyn Criminal=20
Court Thursday and entered a guilty plea to one misdemeanor charge of=20
menacing. A felony assault charge was thrown out by the prosecution as=20
part of the plea deal.

She was sentenced to time served, and a letter of apology was=20
submitted. "She basically had to write a letter of apology to the=20
victim, and a full order of protection was also issued," Kings County=20
District Attorney's Office rep Sandy Silverstein told E! News.

On Monday, the judge mistakenly issued a bench warrant for=20
Brown's arrest when she failed to turn up for a hearing. The warrant was=
=20
rescinded after the judge determined there was a clerical error by=20
failing to note the hearing was changed to Thursday.

Brown is also expected to plead out this week in a misdemeanor assault=20
case in Pembroke Pines, Fla., stemming from a February 2007 incident in=20
which she was arrested for causing a disturbance in a beauty shop and=20
allegedly spitting on an employee.

NICK CANNON EXPLAINS WHIRLWIND MARRIAGE: Artist says he and Mariah=20
clicked from the moment they met.

*In today's new issue of People magazine, Nick Cannon explains how he=20
met, fell in love and married Mariah Carey - all within the span of one=20
month.=20

It all started in late March when Carey cast him as her love interest=20
in the video for her new single, "Bye Bye."

"From the first time we sat down to discuss the video at the Beverly=20
Hills Hotel, we connected," Cannon said in the May 19 issue, which=20
features exclusive photos from the wedding. "We had so much in common=20
spiritually, and we laugh at the same things. I didn't have to put on my=
=20
Mac Daddy suave mode. I was able to be myself with her. We are both=20
eternally 12 years old."

They began showing up at various events together, sparking talk that a=20
romance may be afoot. Carey kicked the rumors into high gear at the=20
Tribeca Film Festival premiere of her movie "Tennessee," where she=20
sported a huge diamond on her left ring finger.

Next thing you know, the 38-year-old singer and the 27-year-old=20
actor were exchanging vows on April 30 at Carey's Bahamian estate. Were=20
Carey's friends surprised?
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"Some were, but some weren't," she told People. "One thing (few
people) knew was we got tattoos a few weeks earlier. So anyone who saw=20
my (Mrs. Cannon) tattoo wasn't surprised."

Oprah Winfrey told her audience Wednesday that she saw the "Mrs.
Cannon" tattoo when Carey appeared on her show about a week before the=20
wedding, but thought nothing of it.

Cannon said, "To me rings are special and exciting, but tattoos=20
mean more than anything. They're forever and ever. They professed our=20
love."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
According to People, a dozen guests attended their sunset=20
wedding, where guests feasted on Maine lobster and Dom Perignon=20
champagne. The bride wore a gown by Nile Cmylo that showed off her=20
curves and faded from off-white to pale pink.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"My pastor Clarence Keaton flew in from New York," Carey said.=20
"The whole wedding was really beautiful and sweet. Being there with=20
loved ones under the sky ... it was a spiritual moment."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Cannon said he was speechless watching Carey walk down the aisle:=
=20
"I was elated, but I was thinking, 'Don't pass out.' ... (The pastor)=20
said, 'The eyes are the window to the soul,' then gave us an entire=20
minute to stare into each other's eyes. So I was saying, 'Don't cry.'"
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The pair said they're already thinking about having kids. "It's=20
part of the whole purpose of getting married," Carey said. "I'd just=20
want our children to have the best childhood and upbringing they=20
possibly could."=20

WILL SMITH'S 'HANCOCK' FIGHTS RATINGS BOARD: Producers want PG-13 but=20
MPAA twice slapped it with an R.

*The upcoming Will Smith movie "Hancock" is having trouble getting the=20
PG-13 rating desired by the film's producers.

According to the New York Times, the $150 million film has been=20
submitted twice to the ratings board and tagged each time with an R,=20
citing several objectionable scenes.

Director Peter Berg revealed that the movie - starring Smith as=20
an unconventional, alcoholic superhero - contained scenes of a statutory=
=20
rape up until three weeks ago. Another scene, changed before filming=20
began, had Hancock getting drunk with a 12-year-old. The final version=20
features the same scene with a 17-year-old.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Nevertheless, Berg says that the film "remained surprisingly=20
sexual, violent and true in spirit to an original script" from=20
screenwriter Vincent Ngo. His early draft was considered "brilliant, but=
=20
unfilmable" in early studio buzz.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The current film is now undergoing a tug-of-war of sorts between=20
the filmmakers who want to keep the darker and more dramatic meat of the=
=20
story - and both the studio execs and ratings boards who want something=20
that will pull in as big an audience as possible under a PG-13 rating.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Helping soothe this is the film's marketing campaign, which=20
apparently plays up the lighter and more comedic moments of the film.=20
Berg admits: "The ad campaign for this movie is much friendlier than the=
=20
film."
Sony chief Amy Pascal says "It's scary in that it goes farther than=20
we've gone before."=20

CARMELO FOLLOWS DUI WITH SPEEDING TICKET: Denver Nugget nabbed for=20
driving 15 mph over speed limit.

*Three weeks after his DUI arrest, Carmelo Anthony was cited for=20
speeding Saturday after cops caught him allegedly driving 60 mph in a=20
45-mph zone.

A Denver cop pulled him over in the 2400 block of South Santa Fe Drive=20
after getting a radar gun indication of 15 to 19 mph over the limit, the=
=20
Rocky Mountain News reported.
=09
On April 14, the NBA star was arrested in Denver and charged with=
=20
driving under the influence. He's due back in court on June 5 to answer=20
the charge.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson says Anthony does not have to appear in=20
court on the speeding ticket if he mails in the $130 fine.

MORGAN FREEMAN TIRED OF BEING 'MR. GRAVITAS': Actor returns to the stage=
=20
in role unlike any he's played before.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
*Morgan Freeman, 70, is looking to stretch his seasoned acting=20
muscles into fresh territory with his new role in Broadway's "The=20
Country Girl," a production of Clifford Odets' 1950 drama, directed by=20
Mike Nichols.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
After decades of playing such characters as the all-knowing cop,=20
the principal with a heart of gold, the voice-of-reason sidekick and the=
=20
ultra-cool president, the Academy Award-winner travels to the other end=20
of the spectrum in "The Country Girl" to play an insecure man described=20
as a "bleary bum," reports the AP.=20=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Freeman plays Frank Elgin, a stage actor long past his prime who=20
is battling both insecurity and an alcohol problem. When a juicy part in=
=20
a Broadway-bound play comes along, a battle of sorts breaks out between=20
his long-suffering wife (Francis McDormand) and a producer (Peter=20
Gallagher) banking that Elgin will reclaim his acting chops.

Freeman, who has twice played God on film, hopes the role will remind=20
fans that he can also play characters with a less than noble core.

"There's a finite number of characters who are like that before=20
you start repeating yourself ad nauseam. I think that's the bigger=20
danger than being Mr. Gravitas," he says. "You look at your last work=20
and say, 'That's four characters in a row that said, did, thought, acted=
=20
the same. They're going to find me out any minute now.'"

PORN COMPANY SAYS HENDRIX SEX TAPE IS LEGIT: Vivid Entertainment asks=20
rock legend's estate to prove that it isn't.

*Vivid Entertainment on Thursday began selling a video it believes=20
shows Jimi Hendrix having sex with two women in a hotel room. The=20
company moved forward despite allegations by the late rocker's estate=20
claiming that it's not Hendrix on the tape.

In a statement released this week, Vivid co-chairman Steven Hirsch said=
=20
his company "is so confident of the authenticity of the 40-year-old=20
footage in 'Jimi Hendrix The Sex Tape' that it recently offered $100,000=
=20
to Experience Hendrix, LLC, the family company of the legendary=20
guitarist, if it can provide verifiable proof that Hendrix is not the=20
'star' of the tape."

Hirsh said his company "took considerable time and spent a=20
substantial sum of money to authenticate the footage and we are very=20
comfortable that this is the real thing. We believe that those who say=20
otherwise are relying on their emotions to make unsubstantiated claims.=20
If Experience Hendrix can prove definitively that it's not Jimi Hendrix=20
on this footage then we will pay them $100,000."=20

ISAIAH WASHINGTON REP QUESTIONS 'ANATOMY' MOVE: Says show has the nerve=20
to use his image after they fired him.

*Isaiah Washington is apparently upset over the use of his image=20
in last night's episode of "Grey's Anatomy," as well as in promos=20
leading up to the airing.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The actor's face is pictured in a newspaper clipping that hangs=20
on a wall in the show's hospital.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
According to TMZ.com, Washington doesn't appreciate the=20
producer's decision to use a picture of him on the program since they=20
had a hand in his controversial firing last June for using a homophobic=20
slur.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Isaiah's rep, Howard Bragman, tells TMZ.com: "Isaiah has no plans=
=20
to go back to 'Grey's Anatomy' ... That being said, we were more than a=20
little surprised that ABC used his likeness in a promo for the show, and=
=20
indeed advanced his character's storyline. Mr. Washington's attorney has=
=20
contacted the Screen Actors Guild and ABC as to the appropriateness of=20
that action."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Washington is currently in New Orleans filming "Patriots"=20
opposite Forrest Whitaker.

SHARPTON, BELL FIANCEE ARRESTED DURING PROTEST: Hundreds of=20
demonstrators shut down traffic during rush hour.

*The Rev. Al Sharpton made good on his promise to shut New York City=20
down in protest of the acquittal of three detectives in the 50-bullet=20
shooting of unarmed black man Sean Bell on his wedding day.

Sharpton, two survivors of the shooting and Bell's fianc=E9e Nicole, took=
=20
to the streets chanting "no justice, no peace" and converged on six=20
heavily used bridges and tunnels that carry traffic to and from=20
Manhattan island.=20

Sharpton, the two shooting survivors and Nicole Bell were among the=20
216 people arrested on disorderly conduct charges. They were detained=20
for about four hours before being released.=20

The demonstrations - which included praying, singing and shouts of=20
protest slogans - were part of a coordinated campaign to urge federal=20
authorities to investigate the shooting of Sean Bell in November 2006.

The three officers were acquitted of state charges last month in=20
a case that from the start ignited protests and spurred criticism of=20
police tactics. One of the officers fired 31 shots, emptying his clip=20
two times in a few short seconds.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Sharpton has said Wednesday's "pray-in" protest was a preview of=20
potential future demonstrations designed to paralyze the city.
