Found these free programs through Google. Haven't used them myself but my experience with other free progs has been good enough that I would give them a go were I in your position.

Hi Julia,

Yes, I do believe that ArchivalWare will meet all your described needs. We are using it to manage the State of Utah's repository for digital publications for permanent public access. ArchivalWare accepts virtually all document formats and it provides complete full text access as well as searches of the metadata we supply. While we use it strictly for publications, the State of Wyoming uses it for digitized newspapers, and other libraries and government agencies use it for it digitized documents like photographs.

ArchivalWare provides sophisticated security and access controls that make it ideal for an intranet or a situation where access needs to be controlled. The Department of Corrections in our state uses it for non-public criminal court dockets and sentencing records, and while our own library's primary collection of documents is public, we also have a collection for internal documents that we limit to our staff.

It's a really good product, has great support from the company, is competitively priced, provides for fast cataloging and uploading of docments, and requires less in-house customization to get it operational than most of the open source and commercial alternatives that we considered.

Hi Brian,

Two steps: first dowload on another computer AVG-software for free, this will give you a program to detect the virus on your laptop and remove it. It is simple butb good virus-protection software. Next download and install Spybot which is free as well and run it, it will detect and remove spyware if on your laptop. Last but not least, downlaod and install Ad-aware free, good protection against malware etc as well. I have those 3 packages running on my pC and they do a perfect job
Second step, if you then still have problems you can reboot to an older version of your startup settings, by using the XP option to start your PC with an older known good date.
best of luck!

The kind of malware that does this often shuts down virus scanners and prevents you connecting to/downloading/installing alternative virus scanning software. If you have a virus scanner installed already, you may be able to use it still if you re-start your computer in "safe mode" (an instruction on how to do this will appear in the first few seconds of restarting the computer if it's a Windows PC). Then you can access your virus scanner in "command line mode" - basically it's the old DOS way of doing things. Use another PC to find out how your virus scanning software provider does this by going to their website and searching for items on "boot disk" "command line" or "safe mode".

A really good one for malware is Spybot. I use it for school and teacher PCs and they pick up all kinds of crud. I haven't yet seen a virus that can beat it, and I haven't had to run it in safe mode.

If the trojan is stopping you getting to the web page, then download it to another PC and move it over with a USB stick. The downloadable is on this page:

Invest in a good AV package - personally I use McAfee but there are others as good. Make sure things like firewall protection are enabled.

As a clean-up measure you may find it useful to run msconfig (click 'Run' from the start meny and enter 'msconfig' in the box) - this will enable you to find out what start up services are being fired up. If you don't recognise one and it looks suspect msconfig will allow you to block it.

System restore (to a previous known good state) may help depending on when the infection occurred and whether the infection is still lurking somewhere in your system after the restore.

Thanks to all of you in the Free Pint Community for helping me with this problem. I downloaded Spybot, AVG and Ad-aware from my friend's PC. They found 85 spy problems, 56 viruses and just 1 ad. I was more than a little worried about the Spybot windows popping up and asking for permission to change registry settings but I agreed and now my computer is up and running again. Much appreciated.

[303576] Simple words in many languages
http://www.freepint.com/go/b303576

Author:Patricia Yates
Date:07/05/2008 10:04 am
Category:Language, Education, Arts and Events

At the moment I am speaking to people in many countries and would be grateful for advice on where to find:

good morning, good afternoon, good evening, hello, goodbye, please and thank you in the following languages:

Dutch, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hindi, Turkish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Slovenian, Afrikaans. French and German I can cope with but it would probably be wise to include them for tidiness' sake.

The ideal solution would be a table with the seven phrases each in a column with each language in a row.

I look forward to hearing your ideas on sources of this information.

Many thanks

[303720] Library 2.0 in public libraries
http://www.freepint.com/go/b303720

Author:Sarah Hammond
Date:07/05/2008 05:22 pm
Category:Information Issues

Further to a discussion on "Web 2.0 hype?" last year, I wanted to pose the question more specifically:

Why are public libraries in USA more engaged with Web 2.0 applications than their UK counterparts?

I'm trying to work out if it is genuinely worthwhile getting involved in activities such as blogging if you are a public library. And are public library authorities developing web activity policies commensurate with the explosion of stuff online?

I'm working in my MA in Librarianship and the above is my dissertation topic; I'm more than just academically interested in it, I want to be able to justify my standpoint (that it is worthwhile engaging) when I get into my first professional role. From a user-centred design standpoint, there is no point developing blogs etc just because you think they are a good thing, you need to be able to discern a need or desire amongst your actual or potential users. I think I'm far too close to the issue to be able to judge, I'm a library geek, of course my local library's website is in my del.icio.us bookmarks but I don't think that's necessarily "normal"!

So, I am seeking examples of UK public libraries with blogs specifically but any Web 2.0 activity is of interest and also the librarians that are responsible for their content because I want to gauge underlying attitudes that motivate you to blog, facebook etc.

I know that one of the big problems is that the library's website sits underneath that of the local authority and that is usually somewhat clunky and generic, but how much of a problem is this? What other problems have you encountered? Have you given it up as a bad job? What would happen to the blog if you moved to another job?

Lots of questions I know but I would be very interested to hear what you all think; including whether or not you would bookmark your local library's blog?

Many thanks

Sarah

Can anyone recommend a good Arabic to English (and reverse) translation site on the web OR software. Must be suitable for business purposes including legal documents.

The simpler web mechanical translation services (like Babel Fish) are not suitable. Has anyone used the Systran software?

Thanks for your thoughts

[304118] Company information for FE students
http://www.freepint.com/go/b304118

Author:Claire
Date:08/05/2008 11:36 am
Category:Company, Industry, Country and Product Research

I'm about to put together a 2 or 3 page guide for our college students on finding company information.

I'm very rusty on this front...so I would appreciate advice on what free resources are available, including any sites which can explain company information in simple terms. The college offers students Marketline and Scotbis, so I'm looking for resources to supplement them. The kind of information students are usually seeking is basic contact and financial details, mission statements etc to start their research.

With thanks in advance...

Hi people,

I am new to forms and databases etc but have started using a program to collect customer data for my advertising site.

I want to be able to set up an auto email feature that will send the statistics to the advertisers detailing how many click-throughs their advert has had from my site.

I would like this to happen once a month and also an email reminder 1 week before their subscription ends telling them to renew.

I am at a loss with this, I don't really know what i'm looking for or what to search for so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

many thanks
