*A brief recap of some of the highpoints from the Jeremiah Wright=20
resurrection tour:
The former pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ in=20
Chicago reiterated his belief that America has been a terrorist nation=20
from its inception, defended his damning of America, stood by his belief=
=20
that the American government created the HIV virus and placed drugs in=20
the Black community in order to exterminate Black people, further=20
derided the country as a place where "I can worship God on Sunday=20
morning wearing a black clergy robe and kill others on Sunday evening=20
wearing a white Klan robe." Finally, Wright dismissed the entire=20
controversy over his words as an attack on the Black church.
Just a guess, but I am betting he did himself no favors. I would=20
add that rather than pen op-eds telling us all how ignorant we are=20
because we don't understand Black liberation theology, the reverend's=20
supporters would do better to simply produce a tape where the former=20
pastor is heard preaching something along the lines of "God bless this=20
great and good country."=20=20
=20
The problem for Wright's supporters and ultimately for=20
presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who counted the reverend as his=20
spiritual advisor, is that there is no such tape because no such sermon=20
was delivered. Rather, what was heard on video clips across the world=20
wide web and then repeated in the speeches and interviews before the=20
National Press Club and the NAACP is left to stand as representative of=20
Wright's views.=20=20
The judgment of any candidate intimately associated with such=20
views is a legitimate political issue and one that like a bad penny will=
=20
continue to revisit Obama over and over again.=20=20

VERONICA'S VIEW: Pride Doesn't Have to Come Before A Fall

*Making ends meet in this economy is more than challenging these=20
days. It's a real magic trick from month to month for many families.
Gas prices seem to have no ceiling. Fees for some municipal=20
services are scheduled to increase. Here in Los Angeles, companies are=20
cutting their workforce due to sagging sales. Reduced revenues have our=20
City government planning layoffs from an institution that was long=20
regarded as recession proof. People are struggling to pay adjusting=20
mortgages; record numbers of people have even lost their homes.=20
I think all of us are feeling the pinch of this tough economy,=20
especially at the gas pump. And lets not forget the bite at the grocery=20
store with food prices soaring to new heights.
It's just tough all the way around.=20
For the first time many working families are faced with making=20
tough choices when it comes to deciding what expenses to pay and what=20
expenses they will have to cut. As their obligatory expenses such as=20
housing, gas, utilities and medical care chip away at their already=20
shrinking budget, very little money is left at the end of the month for=20
food. The choice is daunting month to month.
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank is seeing more families who=20
have to make this kind Sophie's Choice. I recently took a tour of their=20
96,000 square foot facility, which is located just outside of downtown=20
Los Angeles. It wasn't at all what I imaged. There were shelves of=20
non-perishable, name brand and United States Department of Agriculture=20
(USDA) foods neatly assembled for distribution. And surprising, there=20
was a huge refrigerated section for perishable fresh foods, dairy=20
products, and vegetables.=20=20
The Food Bank is celebrating its 35-year anniversary in their=20
fight to end hunger. And with the spiraling downturn in our economy,=20
that fight is getting a lot tougher.
"Hunger is a hidden epidemic," said Darren Hoffman, Communications=
=20
Director of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. "There have been a lot=20
of job loses and we are finding that single mothers and working families=
=20
need temporary help to make ends meet. And we are here to provide that=20
help."=20

THE MO'KELLY REPORT: Mo'Kelly's Not Buying the Mr. & Mrs. Nick Cannon=20

*Somebody please explain the whole "Nick Cannon" phenomenon to=20
Mo'Kelly. Please=85
Not that there's anything "wrong" with him per se, it's just not=20
exactly clear why he's famous.
He's not really a "movie star"=85Drumline + Love Don't Cost a Thing=

+ The Underclassman do not a "movie star" equate.
He's not a "television star" either. All That, Wild 'n Out and=20
Short Circuitz aren't exactly stirring up any Emmy banter or being=20
mistaken for ratings behemoths. Rumor has it that he even had a=20
self-titled television show, The Nick Cannon Show, and a self-titled CD,=
=20
Nick Cannon; though Mo'Kelly can neither confirm nor deny the existence=20
of either. If somebody can prove the existence of either, feel free to=20
forward the proof to Mo'Kelly. In other words, at best neither was=20
around long enough to be remembered.=20
Oh yeah, Cannon was engaged to Selita Ebanks, the Victoria's=20
Secret model. That's "noteworthy." Props to him for that.
And speaking of Ebanks, she is the perfect transition and jump-off=
=20
point=85 (no jump-off pun intended=85kinda sorta=85maybe=85well ok, you twi=
sted=20
Mo'Kelly's arm. It was intended)
Selita Ebanks was proposed to by the aforementioned Nick Cannon=20
one year ago almost to the day (May 7th). One year ago, Ebanks was=20
reading Cannon's marriage proposal on the jumbotron in Times Square.
She accepted.
One year ago today, Cannon planned to spend the rest of his life=20
with a Victoria's Secret model. Can't say Mo'Kelly blames him, but let=20
the record reflect, that as late as October of 2007 (the engagement was=20
broken off October 4), Cannon was "sure" he wanted spend the rest of his=
=20
life with Selita Ebanks.
Usually people don't arbitrarily change who they're willing to=20
commit the rest of the lives to every six months.

REGGAE UPDATES FROM JAMAICA: Elephant Man's 'Physical' tops chart

*Elephant Man's Let's Get Physical (VP/Bad Boy) album which was=20
released commercially on April 8, has debuted at number one on=20
Billboard's Reggae Album chart. The album experienced first week sales=20
of 2,764 units. By comparison, Elephant Man's previous set, Good 2 Go=20
for VP/Atlantic sold more than 31,000 units in its first week of release=
=20
in 2004.=20
Elephant Man was overjoyed when he learnt that Let's Get Physical=20
had topped the publication's reggae album tally. 'We just give God=20
thanks because this means a lot to me. I worked very hard to do this=20
album and the fans have been waiting about three years now for it. We=20
put in so much work that we had to ensure that the fans were satisfied=20
with the finished product,' Elephant Man commented.=20
Let's Get Physical which according to Elephant Man had gotten four=
=20
star ratings in publications such as Vibe and XXL magazines, says he=20
wants fans to appreciate the album. 'The release of the album was put=20
off many times and now we have something that the fans can listen to.=20
This is the album where its going to be either or either. I know what I=20
can do, and getting a number one album on Billboard is very motivating=20
for me', Elephant Man confided.=20

MARIAH 'OVER THE MOON' WITH MARRIAGE: Andre Leon Talley says singer is=20
'very happy.' People's Friday issue has wedding photos. Oprah weighs in.
*The paparazzi hasn't seen or heard from Mariah Carey since her=20
marriage to Nick Cannon, but those closest to her continue to come=20
forward with first-hand observations about how she's been doing since=20
the nuptials.=20
She is very happy. I've spoken with her and she is superb. She is over=20
the moon," Carey's friend, Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley, told People=20
magazine. "I received an email from her [Monday] and she is so happy.=20
She really sounds like someone on her honeymoon."=20
Talley also gushed over Carey's husband, stating: "I love Nick Cannon=20
for Mariah. For Mariah, this is poetry."=20
Meanwhile, People magazine has exclusive photos of the April 30=20
ceremony in its new issue, on newsstands Friday. Some pictures of the=20
ceremony at her Bahamian estate were shown on "The Oprah Winfrey Show"
yesterday after the TV host recalled missing a huge hint that Carey=20
might be planning a wedding.
During her appearance on the show, which took place a week before the=20
wedding, Winfrey said she saw Carey sporting a "Mrs. Cannon" tattoo.
Winfrey said that after the show, Mariah introduced her to Cannon=20
backstage, stating, "Have you said hi to Nick?" Oprah told the audience=20
that she responded, "Hi Nick" and kept it moving.=20=20
"Little did I know I should have paid more attention to the=20
situation," Winfrey told the crowd.
GARY DOURDAN CHARGED WITH THREE FELONIES: Actor in trouble following=20
April 28 arrest for drug possession.
*Gary Dourdan was formally charged with felony drug possession on=
=20
Wednesday in connection with his recent drug arrest in Palm Springs,=20
prosecutors announced.=20

The "CSI" star was hit with three felonies - possession of=20
heroin, cocaine and ecstasy, according to People.com. His arraignment is=
=20
scheduled for May 28.=20

"If convicted, Dourdan faces a probation term and could be=20
required to complete a drug treatment program," said Michael Jeandron, a=
=20
rep for the Riverside County District Attorney. "If he completes it, the=
=20
charges will be dismissed."

Dourdan, 41, was arrested on April 28th when cops found him sound=
=20
asleep in his car surrounded by a buffet of illegal drugs. In a=20
statement to People last weekend, Dourdan said: "Obviously I am=20
embarrassed to find myself in this situation, and I am profoundly=20
grateful to everyone for their support."
MIKE EPPS ACCUSED OF ATTACKING PROCESS SERVER: Man says comic and others=
=20
jumped him.
*A process server claims he was beaten up by Mike Epps and two other=20
men when he tried to serve him with a paternity lawsuit in Kentucky.=20
The alleged victim told Louisville police that he was backstage=20
at Louisville Gardens waiting for his moment to serve the comedian. As=20
he approached and tried to hand Epps the papers, the alleged beatdown=20
ensued.

The man says he suffered an abrasion to the right side of his=20
head and his left eye was swollen shut, according to his complaint.=20

Speaking of unwelcome deliveries, Epps just finished production=20
on the film "Next Day Air," which centers on a UPS driver who accidently=
=20
delivers a package containing hidden bricks of cocaine to the wrong=20
address.
WESLEY SNIPES WANTS FREEDOM DURING APPEAL: Actor asks if he can stay out=
=20
of jail during appeal of tax conviction.
*Wesley Snipes is hoping a judge will allow him to stay out of jail=20
while he appeals his conviction and three-year prison term for failing=20
to file income tax returns.=20=20=20
According to papers filed in U.S. District Court in Ocala, Florida,=20
lawyers for the actor argued that his appeal raises "substantial"=20
questions that are likely to result in a new trial or a shorter prison=20
sentence, and that he isn't a danger to the community. They also argued=20
that he's not a danger to the community and he's too famous to be a=20
flight risk.
The 45-year-old star of "Blade" was convicted Feb. 1 on three=20
misdemeanor counts. U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges sentenced=
=20
him April 24 to the maximum three years in prison.=20
He was acquitted of two felony charges of conspiring to defraud=20
the Internal Revenue Service as well as three other misdemeanor counts=20
of not filing taxes.
RUSSELL SIMMONS WANTS JOINT CUSTODY OF KIDS: Impresario files response=20
to Kimora Lee's request for sole custody of two daughters.
*Russell Simmons is now asking for joint custody of his two=20
daughters in his divorce from estranged wife Kimora Lee, reports=20

In documents filed Tuesday in Los Angeles court, the hip-hop=20
mogul is seeking joint physical and legal custody of his children Ming,=20
8, and Aoki, 5.=20

requesting that Russell get only "reasonable child visitation ... to be=20
accompanied at all times by the children's nanny and security=20
personnel."

WALTERS COMES CLEAN ON STAR JONES DEBACLE: Veteran journalist says Star=20

*Turns out Barbara Walters' secret affair with a black senator isn't=20
the only juicy part of her new book "Audition," and it wasn't the only=20
bombshell from the project dropped during Tuesday's appearance on "The=20
Oprah Winfrey Show."

The veteran television journalist finally spoke out about what really=20
happened during the final two years of Star Jones' tenure as co-host of=20
the ABC morning show "The View."=20
Walters, an executive producer and co-host of "The View," confirmed=20
previous reports that viewers began to turn away from Jones after she=20
got engaged to Al Reynolds and began using "View" airtime to promote her=
=20
wedding vendors as part of a deal to use their various services for=20
free.
As for Jones's sudden and dramatic weight loss, Walters told Oprah:
"She decided to have a gastric bypass operation, but then she decided=20
not to tell anybody. Then we had to lie on the set everyday because she=20
said it was portion control and Pilates. Well, we knew it wasn't portion=

control and Pilates."
Winfrey agreed, stating sarcastically: "We in the audience go,=20
that's some damn Pilates teacher!"
KARL MALONE IMPREGNATED 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL: Child grew up to be Buffalo=20

*Former NBA great Karl Malone - "The Mailman" - reportedly=20
fathered a child with Gloria bell - a girl who was only 12 or 13 years=20
old when she became pregnant.=20
Malone was 20 years old at the time. Amazingly, the child Malone=20
fathered is Demetrius Bell - a recent top draft pick for the Buffalo=20
Bills football team.=20
It appears Malone played no part in raising Demetrius.

Another amazing aspect of the story is how little media attention=20
it has gotten.=20
Based on a scan of media reports from around the country, the=20
Washington, D.C.-based Taylor Media Services has been able to find one=20
broadcast outlet (BET.com) and only two newspapers which have mentioned=20
the story - the Buffalo News and the Los Angeles Times.=20
Meanwhile, ESPN.com's Jemele Hill wrote a follow up piece with=20
comments from Bell. One of which was this doozy:
"I treat it as if my mother went to the sperm bank. I don't hate=20

*Rihanna has finally come clean, sort of, about her relationship with=20

"friendship," despite various paparazzi photos of the two suggesting=20
something deeper, the Barbados-born singer tells Elle magazine: "We've=20
always been friends, but we're very close now."=20
She gets testy with the Elle reporter when asked about old rumors
that she and her mentor Jay-Z had an affair.=20=20=20

"I get asked about it all the time and I'm like, 'You're asking,=20

LIL WAYNE PLEADS NOT GUILTY IN ARIZONA CASE: Rapper faces several drug=20
charges stemming from raided tour bus.
*Lil Wayne pleaded not guilty in Arizona Superior Court Tuesday on=20
various drug and weapons charges stemming from a police search of his=20
tour bus in January.
The rapper is due back in court on May 19 to face charges of=20
possession of dangerous drugs, possession of a narcotic drug for sale,=20
misconduct involving weapons and one count of possession of drug=20
paraphernalia.=20

The traffic stop near a border checkpoint outside of Yuma went=20
sour after a Border Patrol dog alerted officials to the presence of=20
drugs on the bus. A subsequent search uncovered 41 grams of ecstasy,=20
four ounces of marijuana, a little over an ounce of cocaine and a .40=20
caliber pistol, which is registered to Wayne in Florida.=20

Police also confiscated $22,000 dollars in cash and two other=20
firearms.=20
