On the Road Again

Tuk and the Whale

Tuk and the Whale
by Raquel Rivera
Illustrated by Mary Jane Gerber

This beautiful story, set on the eastern coast of Baffin Island in the early 1600s, follows a young Inuit boy named Tuk, who encounters European whalers, blown far north from their usual whaling route. Together, they set out on a hunt on new and uncertain ground.

Dear Sylvia by Alan Cumyn

The third in the Owen Skye series, Dear Sylvia picks up after Sylvia, the love of young Owen Skye's life, has moved away. He nervously attempts a correspondence with Sylvia. Owen is a true writer in his head -- but getting the right words onto the page is another story. Young readers will identify with Owen as he wrestles with spelling, with writer's insecurity, and with his deep desire to tell Sylvia the truth about what is going on in his life, and in his heart.

Alan Cumyn has given the series a new and original twist in this irresistible epistolary novel.
Dear Sylvia
To celebrate Owen's story, twelve years in the making, Groundwood is re-releasing the first two books in the trilogy with a fresh new look! You'll want them all!
Secret Life of Owen Skye

"The Owen stories contain many hilarious moments, but throughout is a central problem. Owen Skye has met his true love in grade school when he is far too young to have to deal with such feelings. How fair is that? But often life is not fair. What should he do when Sylvia Tull's briefest glance dries his throat and turns his face into a burning tomato?"
--author Alan Cumyn

ANANSI NEWS:

Only weeks in release, McMafia has begun its ascent up the New York Times bestsellers list!

"[Misha Glenny] never lets the reader go, determined to shake us into realizing none of us are safe in the end from the tentacles of the new global underworld. Glenny, a former BBC correspondent, pulls off with aplomb what is always the biggest challenge for true-crime writers: making it matter. . . . Glenny's book should be appreciated for the powerful wake-up call it is. Think of it as a Lonely P***t Guide of Organized Crime. Don't leave home without it."

NEW RELEASES:
My Life as a Dame

My Life as a Dame: The Personal and the Political in the Writings of Christina McCall
Edited by Stephen Clarkson

In February 1956, a remarkable young woman named Christina McCall began her working life as an editorial secretary at Maclean's magazine, a legendary time when the likes of Pierre Berton, Robert Fulford, June Callwood, and Peter Gzowski graced the magazine's pages. McCall would come to join that illustrious group, adding her unique voice to a vibrant public discourse by fusing the personal with the political. McCall was at once a pioneer for women in journalism and one of Canada's most brilliant minds.

For the first time ever, the best of Christina McCall's articles and essays have been collected by her husband, author Stephen Clarkson, in one definitive volume alongside never-before-published excerpts from her unfinished memoirs.

"I am always struck, when young women come across [Christina's] work, by how compelling they find it. Together, we brought up three daughters, so I have lived through the formative years of another generation. We are all conscious that much has changed to make it possible for women to enjoy more equality of opportunity. But it is also obvious that basic power relationships remain largely unequal throughout our society. I can't tell whether young professional women will see something of themselves in Christina's words, but I do hope that they will see something of her struggle in theirs -- whether the deep anxieties or the burning drive for excellence, whether the excitement of powerful ideas or the simple celebration of femininity."
-- Stephen Clarkson

>>Read our interview with Stephen Clarkson

"[Christina McCall is] one of the very best journalists Canada has ever produced."
-- Ken Whyte, Maclean's

"The writing here, some of which is nearly forty years old, is as good as anything being produced in this country now, and better than most. . . . examples of fine reportage that also serve as useful reminders of a bygone era."
-- Quill & Quire

Look for it: The Globe and Mail will run an excerpt of My Life As a Dame in the Focus section this weekend.

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR AN UPCOMING TITLE:

The Withdrawal Method by Pasha Malla

Haunting and fresh, Pasha Malla's brilliant stories grant us entry into fascinating worlds -- the forbidden, complex world of children acting out half-understood fantasies of adulthood; the familiar, modern world of young couples navigating hairpin emotional turns. As in the extraordinary stories of writers such as Lorrie Moore, Haruki Murakami, George Saunders, and Barbara Gowdy, Pasha Malla offers us characters who are recognizable, and then peels back layers to reveal the strange, the wondrous, and the unexpected.

The Withdrawal Method

". . . devoted to the timeless narrative rewards of the fickle human heart . . . honest and confident stories . . . the bittersweet mixture of loss and humour bubble through."
-- Globe and Mail

"These stories are weird and wild and wonderful. Funny, too. Pasha Malla has a deft touch."
-- David Bergen, Scotiabank Giller Prize winner for The Time In Between

Look out for an incredible offer just in time for Pasha's launch! Who says you can't get nothing for nothing. . . .

McMafia by Misha Glenny
". . . horrifying but gripping . . . vivid and involving . . ."
-- The Telegraph

". . . immensely informative and more than slightly scary . . ."
-- Washington Post

". . . a vividly recounted journey through a dozen of the world's most potent gangs, cartels and transnational mafias . . ."
-- The Wall Street Journal

". . . a fascinating, highly readable take on the world's crime syndicates."
-- Vancouver Sun

"If we're lucky, McMafia's terrifying tour of the violent underworld of globalized crime will force this issue onto the political agenda."
-- New York Post

". . .demonstrating Glenny's courage, his book exhibits . . . characteristics of special importance. . . he provides insightful sociological perspectives. . ."
-- The Seattle Times

"Misha Glenny travels the world like Dante on his voyage through the ‘global shadow economy' . . . [McMafia] makes this trip through the nastiest parts of the world as gripping as it is important."
-- The Telegraph

". . . Glenny makes an effective case for [organized crime] becoming a truly global force. . ."
-- Toronto Star

". . . [McMafia] is crowded with the world's most ruthless and forward-thinking outlaws. . . . [and] sets out to show how the process of globalization has given birth to a p***t-spanning network of organized crime that mimics the growth, complexitiy, and entrepeneurial know-how of the legitimate economy."
-- Straight.com

". . . sprawling, ambitious. . . . [McMafia is] a reporting odyssey. . . . its thesis is clear, compelling, and scary: the West may have declared war on terrorism, but organized crime is by far the more serious threat to our world today and one we ignore at our peril. . . . Glenny's journey through the international underworld is, on the whole, a rich and illuminating one."
-- Christian Science Monitor

The Jesus Sayings by Rex Weyler
