If you live in an area that has sudden severe weather, like tornadoes,
tropical storms, hurricanes, severe thunderstorms, or flooding, then you
know how important it is to be aware of what’s going on, even if you’re
sleeping. Many people have weather radios that sound the alarm for
watches (might happen) and warnings (in progress), but often the area in
question isn’t that close and now you can’t get back to sleep.
Thankfully, a new system, called WeatherCall, will only warn you if the
event is a warning AND in your specific area. For a very low price of
only $6/location/year, you can sign up for the alerts. You put in your
address, and the phone numbers you want called (up to 3), as well as email
addresses (up to 3) if you want to be alerted that way. You must have
your street address, no box numbers. So during the busy weather season
for your area, you can get some uninterrupted sleep. The phone recording,
and/or email message, will just say what kind of warning it is. Then you
can take cover if necessary. Consider signing up relatives, especially
elderly ones. Go to…

SWIM SHIRTS FOR GIRLS AND GUYS
We all know how important it is to avoid those sunburns, and how difficult
it can be to make a child, teen, or adult for that matter, take the time
to put on sunscreen. Well, thanks to current swim fashions, you can
probably get them to cover up more skin and look “cool” at the same time.
Many people are starting to wear swim shirts (also known as rashguards, or
rashies) with swim shorts (sometimes known as board shorts). Usually the
men’s shorts come down to about the knee, while most girls’ shorts come to
just above mid-thigh. Some shirts are designed to be worn alone, but with
thinner shirts girls might need to wear a suit top under the shirt. These
shirts come up to the neck and come in short or long sleeve versions. So
obviously these outfits provide some great sun protection, not to mention
protection from jellyfish, if you swim in warmer waters. Another plus
for the ladies is minimizing the chance they might reveal a little too
much after a dive or a wave break, as well as an easier time in the
restroom. Most kids & teens think they’re cool, because they look like
surfers or divers. But, to find them locally, you will probably have to
go to a swimsuit store or dive shop. You can order them online from
www.amazon.com
just enter “rashguards” in the search box. Also a smaller selection at…
www.llbean.com
under “wave shirts.” For the shorts you can enter “board shorts” at
either website. If you live in an area that has sharks, then experts
recommend you avoid suits (usually dark ones) that might have a shark
mistaking you for a seal. Brighter colors are a good idea to help you
keep track of weaker swimmers in the surf. Shirts are designed to fit
snugly, so if you like it a little looser, be sure to order them a little
bigger. If you’ve seen the recent Jenny Craig commercial with Valerie
Bertinelli surfing, then you can also see that even we older women can
carry the look…Valerie is 48-yrs-old. You can also see a photo of it on
the Jenny Craig website at…

PRESERVE THAT CORSAGE
Proms are full of special memories, and here’s an easy way to make a
little memento of the occasion. After the prom, call & ask the florist if
they do flower preserving, usually drying the flowers in a special way.
You take the corsage in to them, and they charge a minimal fee. In some
cases, drying is not possible; for example, we were told that white
flowers will almost always turn brown no matter what you do. But you
could still take the corsage in and ask them to replace the live
flowers/greenery with silk ones that match the live ones. The ribbons &
other non-live items would stay the same. It helps to take the corsage to
the florist who made it. It gives the girls a nice memento of their
special night. They can do this with boutonnieres as well, although I’m
guessing most guys wouldn’t be too into that. ;-) Also a great idea for
wedding and other special occasion flowers. POST IT…on your calendar,
with your formal dresses, or in the yellow pages under “Florists.”

RECIPE: LIGHT SIMPLE DESSERTS
This is a great idea for the warmer months and to get those creative
juices flowing. Find some pretty dessert dishes, mostly clear (short
drinking glasses can be used in a pinch), and put in layers of your
favorite yogurt or pudding, and then layers of fresh fruit, canned fruit,
or pie fillings. To give it a little more fluff and make it more like a
mousse, stir Cool Whip (the Fat Free works great) into the yogurt or
pudding (the Jello Fat Free lines are great), add a little food coloring
if you’d like more color. Use more than one yogurt/pudding flavor if you
like, or more than one fruit . Or mix & match…chocolate pudding with
orange flavored yogurt, might be a nice combo, or layers of jello. If you
want to make it richer, then consider layers or chocolate (or other
flavors) chips, candies, or crushed cookies. This is a dessert the whole
family can get into. If you’re having some kind of youth meeting, then
let them fix their own layers & have all the ingredients in bowls. This
can be a lighter and healthier alternative to ice cream sundaes. POST
IT…in your recipe box & shopping list.

FINAL WORDS
JOKE
“An elderly man stumbled across a talking frog, who proceeded to tell him,
“Sir, if you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess and we can be
married and live happily ever after.” The man was amazed and picked up
the frog, asking, “Was that really you talking?” The frog repeated, “Yes
sir, if you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess and we can be
married and live happily ever after.” The man was very pleased with his
discovery and put the frog into his pocket. The frog said, “Hey! What
are you doing? Aren’t you going to kiss me?” The man replied, “At this
stage of my life, I think I’d rather have a talking frog than a wife.”
