STEVEN IVORY: A Loving Toast to the Mighty Fraternity=20=20

*Not a day goes by that we don't consider our circumstance.=20
However, it is during this time every year that we are truly reminded of=
=20
our distinction.
=20=20=20=20
I'm not sure if Hallmark makes a card for us.=20=20=20=20=20
Therefore, it is with respect and honor that on Mother's Day I=20
offer these words for the motherless.
=20=20=20=20
Our mothers have, either suddenly or finally, experienced the full=20
cycle of this precious, mysterious, blessed wonder called life: They=20
were born, birthed children and moved on, leaving us here to continue=20
our lives. Some of us have an easier time than others, but we do so=20
nonetheless.
=20=20=20=20
There is no loss like losing a parent. However, the grief that=20
accompanies the departure of one's mother--that is, a loving, devoted=20
mother, mama, mom, mommy, mother dear, madea--eclipses all emotional=20
pain.=20
=20=20=20=20
After all, she is the vessel, the mothership, the very first human=20
being you meet when you come to this p***t. The=20
connection is instant and deep. So is the ache of the loss, in which=20
the motherless find a singular camaraderie.=20
=20=20=20
Only another soul without their mother can fully empathize with the=
=20
utter yearn and specialized loneliness that becomes easier to bear but=20
never quite passes. There is the looming sense of being on your own=20
that is never completely quelled by anyone or thing.
=20=20=20=20
Not much has to be said. The motherless share in silence the=20=20
definitive definition of the ultimate Bad Day, when life suddenly seems=
=20
insurmountable. Endure the pain of losing your mother, and when they=20
drop the nuclear bomb, you will simply absorb it. I can recall once=20
overhearing two lovers on a bench having a quiet but intense=20
disagreement. Finally, I heard her solemnly say: "Are you trying to=20
hurt me? You cannot hurt me. I lost my mother, remember? My heart is=20
bullet proof."=20=20
=20=20=20=20
I was inducted into the Mighty Fraternity abruptly, dazed and=20
disbelieving, at the age of fifteen. Just as I was coming into my own=
=20
as a young man, mama was gone.
With my father having remarried and scarce on the scene, suddenly=20
there was no one to check with, to seek the approval of or complain to.=20
When a child loses their mother, the departure is all-encompassing.=20
There is emotional confusion. And, a=20
sense of abandonment. It is the Loss of Losses. Who is going to love=20
me?=20=20
Daddy, stepping up to the plate, put aside his marriage and came=20
back to look after me and my two younger brothers still at home.=20
=20=20=20=20
And so, this dissertation is also offered in tender, loving=20
gratitude to fathers who do the right thing, to grandparents, aunts,=20
uncles, brave older siblings and dear family friends; people whose lives=
=20
have also been transformed by the loss, and who valiantly step forward=20
to comfort, nurture and guide--raise--motherless children. To try to=20
replace just one mother, it often takes a village.
=20=20=20=20
But while the motherless lament during this time, Mother's Day is=20
also when we should lift up the spirits of our mothers in joyous,=20
prideful commemoration.
I remember as a child that whenever one of my drawings made my=20
elementary school's hallway bulletin board, mama would come to the=20
school and marvel as if standing before a Picasso.=20=20
=20=20=20=20
I never learned violin, but it wasn't because mama didn't find a=20
way to get me one. And she praised her third child's disjointed scribble=
=20
with a mother's uncanny intuition--moreover, as if she hadn't tirelessly=
=20
exerted the same doting on my=20
older brother and sister, and again on two brothers behind me. I owned=20
my mother's proudness in me like a boy wearing a cape blowing in the=20
wind.=20=20=20=20=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20
I know my mother is still here. She lives in me. Even so, many=20
years later, there are days when I miss her. Terribly.=20
But then, that is another distinction of The Mighty Fraternity: all=
=20
of us, no matter our age or time away from her bosom, will always be our=
=20
mother's child.

THE BRIDGE: Looking For Daddy

*In America, far too many people have "Daddy" issues.
There are myriad reasons, even though some people have no idea=20
what their own are.
Some of the nation's men grow up without knowing how to be men=20
themselves. They need strong models while in their formative years.=20
Without those strong models, issues will arise whenever it is time to=20
man up.
Even into adulthood, many of America's men hold onto blaming the=20
absentee father, or the father who didn't do the things they "should"=20
have done.
And, some of the nation's women grow up without knowing how to=20
interact with men. Humans tend to form their ideas and interactions with=
=20
the opposite sex based on the first opposite sex relationship, which is=20
the parent of the opposite sex.
Even into adulthood, many of America's women hold onto blaming the=
=20
absentee father, or the father who didn't do the things they "should"=20
have done.
For some adults, the absence of Daddy leaves them with open wounds=
=20
that they may not know how to heal. Therapy or at least the forgiveness=20
of Daddy would do wonders, but sadly, this nation has created an=20
environment of blame, such that many people manufacture issues with=20
Daddy, even if there is no real basis.
In such an environment of blame, many Americans avoid looking to=20
any source that may have either removed Daddy, or contributed to Daddy's=
=20
failure to properly parent children.
But any of us with working brains realize that there are other=20
elements, including the government and some single mothers who=20
contribute to Daddy issues.
We know the all too familiar stories of single mothers who have=20
"adult" conversations with their children about the absentee father,=20
leading to otherwise avoidable resentment and larger Daddy issues.
But we all know that many people have real bases for having Daddy=20
issues.
We know that far too many fathers are absent from the lives of=20
their children.
We also know that many of the fathers who are present are=20
inappropriate.
And, we know that the community father is largely missing in=20
action.

*Sticks and stones might break my bones, but words will never hurt=
=20
me. That's the mantra I recited in kindergarten when classmates said=20
mean things to hurt my feelings.
Life is tougher, and so are my feelings. But the words some people=
=20
spew in the name of traditional American values prove the tongue can be=20
mightier than the sword, especially when those words are broadcast to=20
millions of people.
Take the recent editorial by MSNBC political commentator Pat=20
Buchanan entitled PJB: A Brief for Whitey. Generally speaking, it's=20
vintage Buchanan. Just as dogs bark and babies cry, Buchanan's angry=20
white man rants are in the natural order of this life. Just as=20
acknowledging negative behavior in a child only increases it, most times=
=20
it's better to ignore it than to give it oxygen. For Buchanan this not=20
one of those times.
As I wrote in a previous column (see Feb. 19, 2008), some people=20
don't want to live in a United States where a woman or Black man is=20
president. This political season will reveal just how far they are=20
willing to go and how much misinformation they are willing to spread to=20
turn the tide in their favor. Buchanan is one of those people.
The rift between Illinois Senator Barack Obama and his former=20
pastor Jeremiah Wright has given oxygen to the latest Buchanan rant. The=
=20
former presidential candidate recently criticized Obama and Wright for=20
calling on the white community to acknowledge the American legacy and=20
recent history of discrimination and to make amends.=20
Buchanan called the two men ungrateful, saying "America has been=20
the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000=20
black people brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community=20
of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the=20
greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.=20
"Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an=20
American."

*Whoever on Team Obama keeps feeding into Democratic presidential=20
candidate Barack Obama's seeming compulsive need to speak out on the=20
Reverend Jeremiah Wright should get the swift boot.=20
When Wright went on his latest public and media tear, Obama should=20
have simply issued a statement saying this: Wright is no longer my=20
pastor. And as I have said repeatedly, his views do not reflect mine,=20
and then move on.=20
But no, Obama's Wright compulsion drove him to deliver a defensive=20
and apologetic so-called race speech in which Wright was the=20
centerpiece.=20
Next, he denounced Wright's views in an interview. Now he holds a=20
halting, stumbling, anguished voice press conference to denounce Wright=20
again. Here's the effect of all this.=20
He's given a slew of gossipy, media talking heads more salacious=20
grist for the gossip and rumor mill about Wright, the church and Obama's=
=20
long term relationship with both.=20
He's elevated Wright from a relatively obscure, local preacher to a=
=20
nationally known polarizing figure. He's deepened the suspicions of=20
those who all along felt that he was a closet radical and race panderer.=
=20
This hurt him with white voters in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and almost=20
certainly it will hurt him in Indiana. It has pecked away at the razor=20
thin lead he had over Clinton among Democrats, and dropped him behind=20
McCain in the general election.=20

*Oprah Winfrey was a regular member of Chicago's Trinity United Church=20
of Christ from 1984-1986, and attended periodically into the mid-1990s.=20
"But then she stopped," writes Newsweek's Allison Samuels in the current=
=20
issue.
"A major reason-but by no means the only reason-was the Rev.
Jeremiah Wright," Samuels continues. "According to two sources, Winfrey=20
was never comfortable with the tone of Wright's more incendiary sermons,=
=20
which she knew had the power to damage her standing as America's=20
favorite daytime talk-show host."
The magazine comes in the wake of Sen. Barack Obama's recent break from=
=20
Rev. Wright after clips of his more politically-charged sermons ended up=
=20
on YouTube and caused havoc within the Democratic candidate's campaign.
"Oprah is a businesswoman, first and foremost," says one longtime=
=20
friend of Oprah's, according to Samuels. "She's always been aware that=20
her audience is very mainstream, and doing anything to offend them just=20
wouldn't be smart. She's been around black churches all her life, so=20
Reverend Wright's anger-filled message didn't surprise her. But it just=20
wasn't what she was looking for in a church."=20
And while Winfrey, who has endorsed Obama and campaigned on his=20
behalf, had long understood the perils of a close association with=20
Wright, friends say she was blindsided by the pastor's personal assault=20
on Obama, writes Samuels.=20

"She felt that Wright would never do anything to hurt a man who=20
looked up to him as a father figure," said her close friend. "She also=20
never thought he'd intentionally hurt someone trying to make history and=

her lawyer says it was all a misunderstanding.
*For several hours on Monday, it appeared as if Foxy Brown was headed=20
back to jail after she missed a court appearance and a judge issued a=20
bench warrant for her arrest.
Turns out that the court actually forgot to move her rescheduled=20
hearing from Monday to Thursday and recalled the warrant after realizing=

After an eight month stay on Rikers Island, Foxy is facing=20
assault and weapons charges from her alleged Blackberry assault on a=20
Brooklyn neighbor. Her lawyer Laura Dilimetin told TMZ.com that she got=20

on the calendar.=20=20
On Thursday, Foxy, 25, will face assault and weapons charges for=20
allegedly throwing her Blackberry cell phone at a woman in her Prospect=20

The woman suffered swelling in her lip, loose teeth and swelling in her=20

Brown, born Inga Marchand, is also due in court on May 8, where=20

*Someone in the audience of a 50 Cent concert in Africa really thought=20
he could jump on stage, snatch the rapper's chain and flee without=20
incident. Needless to say, the dude caught a beat down from 50, himself,=

before he was eventually caught by police.
The chain snatching was filmed by a camera phone and flooded the=20
