The President's Schedule

Monday, April 28, 2008
President Bush met with President Alvaro Colom of the Republic of Guatemala, where they discussed a range of common interests, including increasing social development and trade ties, cooperating on security and crime, and strengthening democratic institutions. Later, he met with U.S.-Brazil CEO Forum. Afterwards, President Bush met with the National Commander of the American Legion.

"We've had a good discussion about a variety of issues. We discussed bilateral relations between Guatemala and the United States, which are very strong. We are friends. We treat each other with respect. Our objective with U.S. foreign policy is to have a neighborhood that is peaceful and prosperous, where social justice is important; want to achieve social justice through good health policy, good education policy, good judicial policy. The United States is pleased to help this government as best as we possibly can help the average citizen get a good education and have good health care."

In the morning, President Bush held a press conference. Later, President Bush met with the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Afghanistan. Afterwards, he made remarks on National Volunteer Week. Prior to the remarks, President Bush presented Volunteer Service Awards to Paul Otellini, President and CEO, Intel, and Barry Salzberg, CEO, Deloitte LLP in recognition of their tremendous community service. During his remarks, the President formally sent off 33 Peace Corps volunteers who are leaving on Wednesday for their term of service in Guatemala. Today, volunteering in the United States is at historically high levels. Last year, more than 60 million volunteers from across the United States provided critical social services in communities both at home and abroad.

“In all these issues, the American people are looking to their leaders to come together and act responsibly. I don't think this is too much to ask even in an election year. My administration will reach out to Congress. We will work to find areas of agreement so that we can deal with the economic pressures that our American taxpayers and American families are feeling. I ask Congress to do its part by sending me sensible and effective bills that I can sign, instead of issuing or sending bills that simply look like political statements. We can work together. We can help Americans weather this difficult period. We can keep our country moving forward.”

Later, the President congratulated the New York Giants on winning Super Bowl XLII. In the evening, President Bush attended a National Republican Congressional Committee reception.

"Good teachers hear a call. Good teachers are empathetic souls. And really the best teachers have a special intuition -- and I suspect a little potential -- the ability to see potential and the ability to have the patience necessary to watch it grow. I want to thank you for nurturing young minds. I thank you for providing such wonderful examples. And I thank you for inspiring the imaginations and unleashing the talents of our nation's young."

President Bush made remarks on the National Day of Prayer, a tradition that dates back to February 19, 1795, when President Washington issued a proclamation for a day of public thanksgiving. In 1952, President Truman marked the first official National Day of Prayer, and in 1988, President Reagan signed legislation designating the first Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer. Each year, more than two million people attend approximately 40,000 observances across the country.

In the afternoon, the President made remarks at the celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Asian/Pacific Americans have enriched our culture, excelling in many fields, including education, business, science, technology, government, sports, and the arts. We especially honor those Asian/Pacific Americans who have answered the call to protect the cause of freedom by serving in our Armed Forces.

"On this day, Americans come together to thank our Creator for our nation's many blessings. We are a blessed nation. And on this day, we celebrate our freedoms, particularly the freedom to pray in public and the great diversity of faith found in America. I love being the President of a country where people feel free to worship as they see fit. And I remind our fellow citizens, if you choose to worship or not worship, and no matter how you worship, we're all equally American."
