Hey Shanghai

How U doing? I'm writing this from the sandy beaches of Sanya! Attached is a photo of me and my friends here on vacation. Jealous?

Anyways it was a hellish flight down here but I made it in one piece. Your pal the admiral had to squeeze in a little two-seater that looked like it was on loan from Air Bosnia. And so it's a weekend away from Shangers for me, but that doesn't mean that I don't have my finger firmly on the pulse of what's happening back in SH.

First, some rumour mongering: a little bird tells me that Windows Tembo, Shanghai's newest live stage, is going to shut down at the end of this month, and they're moving the whole operation to a new underground location. So look for their new incarnation next month. Here's to hoping they can whether the down season in the summertime ... AND planning is underway for the Mural bar boat cruise party. June 28. Keep that date open. Mr. Stokes (nee Bananas) is coming back for that one and they're looking to have a live band, along with the usual bananas boat party wackiness.

But what about your holiday weekend? I'm liking MAO these days, son. And I'm not the only one. John Cussack does too, and he was there last Thursday -- smoking cigarettes and looking all puffy. Nice to see you out John but what the EFF was "Must Love Dogs"? That move was total shitbox, dude. It made "You've Got Mail" look like the m'effing "Godfather," man. Anyways, head there tonight to catch Dirty Epic. House music, models, etc. -- real Shanghai stuff right there, you know the score.

Anar bar should be good all weekend as well. Plus with LOgO out of commission until the third where else is your trendy d-bag ass going to hang? Anar's got Russian Disko tonight and Trix's birthday bash tomorrow. No cover on each and some drink specials in there as well.

Mural Bars got a good one for tonight. All Funked Up with DJ SexyPaul. You wouldn't believe how funky DJSP gets. So that's also a good one in my book.

Big DJ party for the weekend is King Unique and M2, free if youre a Q5 member.

Live music is on overdrive, with Live Bar hosting a little festival type thing (May 1-4), and Yuyintang hosting a slew of Chinese acts tonight. Angry Jerks headlining.

Head on down to Tembo on Saturday to catch The 21st Century Noise from Sweden. Good band, bad name, worth the cover price.

So that's it for me. Back to the beach. Americans (and Mexicans), don't forget stinko de mayo this Monday.

Don't feed the bears.

Turn off the lights and I'll glow,

Da Admiral l

MAO > Dirty Epic

Locally-based superstar DJs Carl Lorimer and Steve Bamford take over MAO for "DirtyEpic" -- "a night of twisted, techy, emotional, spastic, jackin ,bleepy, dirty, discombobulated ,moody house techno and breaks." I hear these guys sound like Block Party. Back to back 10pm till 6am. Intense. | show flyer

M2 > King Unique

King Unique are two guys called Matt who make dirty house music (heavy on the "bulldozer beats and sick synthesizers"). Lots of big-time DJ folk like these dudes: Sasha, Soulwax, Danny Howells, Tiesto, Pete Tong, and Zane Lowe. So if you like those later dudes, then you'll probably like these King Unique dudes. Cover charge is 100rmb (including one standard drink). Starts 10pm. | show flyer

The Shelter > The Shelter Foundation

The Shelter's charity night returns this Friday with V-Nutz (Back to the Roots) Drunk Monk (Uprooted Sunshine) Lab Crew (Quality Control) Alan Shanyinde (New King of Blue) Siesta (Sweatshop) Fish (Void) Jay. Mural > All Funked Up

Making his debut at Mural bar is DjSexyPaul. He will be, in his own words (with a few grammatical corrections), "spinning a set of chocolate-covered '70s funk, mixed with some nipples of classic 80s disco." Along for the ride is DJ Elmono. Here's more of DJSP: "Expect lottsa illegally downloaded but high quality tunes and some exclusive DjSexypaul Mash-Ups including his just-finished masterpiece of Sugarhill Gang Vs Chic. And around about 1:30 when everyones nice and "soaked" from the open bar then we will play a new game to Mural called "Throw Stuff at Zee German" wherein you pick up the closest (and heaviest) item to hand at throw it at Carsten. Oh how we will laugh when "blunt force trauma by misadventure" is announced by the county coroner..." 100rmb all you can drink. | show flyer

Anar > Russian Disko

Saturday, May 3rd

Anar > Inapropriate

DJ Trix is romantically reunited with transplanted DJ partner DJ Slackerton, in a love story of the ages. Come feel their love as it is splashed out all over the decks at Anar this Saturday. They're playing "Shaolin Punk Crunk and Junk." Hmm, to me that sounds like The Boredoms spliced with the Wutang Clan, with the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon soundtrack playing in the background. Inappropriate indeed. No cover. And its Trix's birthday so he'll probably be well mashed. | show flyer

M2 > DJ-Diamond

Hawaiian DJ Diamond is a world famous (and hot) DJ, spinning house and progressive trance music. Not much else to say about that. Hot DJs playing house music? Should be enough for some of you. No cover charge. | show flyer

Self-described fusion band kARNATRIIX blends experimental, electro-acoustic, nu-jazz and blues. Some Buddhist stuff must be floating in there too because their CD cover reads "namaste." Joke of the week

A blind man walked into a bank with his seeing-eye dog that guided him everywhere. He walked into the center of the bank floor, took the dog by the chain, and started swinging him around his head.

Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared. The other customers were taken aback and some were very upset at the way the animal was being treated. One of the tellers ran up to the blind man and asked, "Sir, what are you doing!?!"

The man turned toward the teller and said, "Oh, nothing - just looking around."
