LINUX GAINS MEDIA-ORIENTED GRAPHICS STACK
The DirectFB project has spawned a lightweight open source multimedia
graphics framework and a Linux-based media center middleware stack. The
"Disko" framework and "MorphineTV" stack are suitable for use in digital
video broadcast receivers and IPTV set-top boxes, project leaders say.

NOKIA ADDS QT TO MAEMO
Nokia will support Qt application development on its Linux-based
Internet tablets, it has announced. Noting that GTK and Qt co-exist in
the desktop world, Nokia says it hopes to distribute Qt libraries for
Maemo during Q4, enabling N8xx tablet ports of Qt-based desktop and
device applications.

LINUX-BASED DEVICE GAINS MOTION GAMES
Chumby Industries announced a partnership with Albino Blacksheep to
provide Flash-based games for the Linux-based Chumby "alarm-clock"
computer, leveraging its motion-sensing capabilities. Meanwhile,
Chumby's development site is growing, providing a forum, wikis, and
other information for hacking the Chumby's open-source hardware and
software.

LINUX-BASED NAS DEVICES MOVE UP TO 6TB
Blurring the line between SOHO and enterprise network-attached storage
(NAS), Netgear has announced three appliances that each provide six
drive bays in a small-format box. The Linux-based ReadyNAS Pro systems
come in 1.5TB, 3TB, and 6TB versions, and use Intel Core 2 Duo
processors, says Netgear.

APPLE ACQUIRES LINUX-FRIENDLY CHIP VENDOR
A vendor of power-efficient multicore PowerPC processors that run Linux
and other embedded OSes will be acquired by Apple. Apple's buyout of
P.A. Semi could signal plans to migrate back to PowerPC, but what
about P.A.'s carrier-grade Linux customers?

64-WAY CHIP GAINS LINUX IDE, DEV CARD, DESIGN WIN
Tilera introduced a Linux-based development kit for its scalable,
64-core Tile64 SoC (system-on-chip). The company also announced a dual
10GbE PCIExpress card based on the chip (pictured at left), revealed a
networking customer win with Napatech, and demo'd the Tile64 running
real-time 1080P HD video.

MULTI-THREADED PROCESSOR GOES DUAL-CORE
Raza Microelectronics, Inc. (RMI) is shipping a new low-end XLS
MIPS64-based processor called the XLS208 that offers dual 1GHz cores and
comes with a Linux-compatible evaluation board and software development
kit (SDK). RMI also announced that Macraigor's hardware debugging tools
will support both XLS and higher-end XLR chips.

CGLINUX PORTED TO MULTICORE MIPS64 CHIPS
Wind River has ported its newest Carrier Grade Linux distribution to
multicore MIPS64-based processors from Raza Microelectronics, Inc.
(RMI). Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition (PNE-LE) 2.0 for
RMI's XLR chip line brings features like dual IPv4/IPv6 support and
modern crytography to enterprise and telecom customers alike, Wind River
said.

LINUX DISTRO WINS SOFTWARE AWARD
MontaVista's Mobilinux 5.0 Linux distribution for mobile phones won an
EDN Magazine 2008 "Innovation Award" under the software category. The
award for "Innovator of the Year," meanwhile, went to Intel's 45nm
semiconductor process technology team.

NEW MOBILE DEVICE TOUCHSCREEN TECH DEMO'D
Wacom has announced a new touchscreen technology aimed at reducing
problems associated with capacitive touchscreens in mobile devices. RRFC
(reversing ramped field capacitive) touchscreens will use ramped
voltages to deliver greater accuracy, easier finger operation, freedom
from recalibration, and longer battery life, Wacom says.
