Hackmatack Children's Choice Awards...
Three Orca titles have been nominated for the 2008/2009 Nova Scotia Hackmatack Children's Choice Book Awards.
Racing for Diamonds, an Orca Young Reader by Anita Daher, TJ and the Quiz Kids an Orca Young Reader by Hazel Hutchins, and book one in the Graphic Guides Adventure Series, Wild Ride by Liam O'Donnell and Mike Deas, have all been nominated for this prestigious Maritime list.


Amelia Frances Howard Gibbon Award...
The shortlist for the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator's Award has been announced. The award is presented by the Canadian Association of Children's Librarians, to the illustrator of an outstanding children's book. The winner will be announced at the  CLA Conference n Vancouver, in May.

Two Orca titles have been shortlisted:
 
Chocolate Lily Award...
Three recent Orca titles have been nominated for the Chocolate Lily Award, a BC children's choice award.
The winner will be announced May 30th in Surrey, BC. 
The nominated titles are:

  • Safe House by James Heneghan, 978-1-55143-640-1
  • Yossi's Goal, an Orca Young Reader by Ellen Schwartz, 978-1-55143-492-6
  • Dragon Tide, by Ingrid Lee and Soizick Meister, 978-1-55143-352-3

Alberta Literary Awards...
The nominees for the R. Ross Annett Award for Children's Literature have been announced.
The Big Snapper, an Orca Young Reader by Edmonton author Katherine Holubitsky was included on the list.
The winner will be announced in September

Manitoba Writers' Guild
The Whirlwind, a recent teen novel by Winnipeg author Carol Matas, has been short-listed for the McNally Robinson Book for Young People Award.
The Whirlwind is the story of a Jewish boy from Germany who moves to Seattle during World War II.

Booklist
said The Whirlwind "confronts a shameful part of World War II history - prejudice against German Jewish refugees. ...effectively moves from fury and blame to understanding and love..."

Alcuin Award...
Mechanimals, a picturebook by Chris Tougas has been honored again. This time for design. Orca Art Director Teresa Bubela and author Chris Tougas have won the Alcuin Society Award for Excellence in Book Design in Canada for this beautiful picturebook.

(Chris' newest title, Art's Supplies is just out and is also a beautifully designed book - and a very funny story.)
