Trial offer for SANS Security Essentials via SANS @Home starting May 12
Dear Harry Cliford,
You are invited to participate in the SANS @Home 2008 spring edition of
SANS Security Essentials. The weekly course webcasts begin Monday, May
12. For complete course details and to register, click on
http://www.sans.org/info/25083
Here is what Ryan Spenser of LexisNexis said about the last time Becky
taught SANS Security Essentials via @Home:
"Instructor Becky Pinkard was very knowledgeable about the course
material, and was easily able to make the information make sense to me
via SANS @Home."
**********************************************************************
SANS is allowing you to sample the course by viewing the first session
of SANS Security Essentials on May 12 at no cost. Then you can decide
if you would like to continue with the full course by paying the course
tuition. For complete details on how to participate in the first
session at no cost, see details at the bottom of this note. Please
note, this trial offer is only available to the first 10 people who take
the trial offer, so we encourage you to act quickly while the trial
seats are still available.
**********************************************************************
This is the cornerstone SANS course and prepares students to pass the
GSEC certification exams and the Security Plus certification exam. For
those Department of Defense employees and contractors, the GSEC and
Security Plus certs are two of the approved certification on the DoD
Directive 8570 list.
There is nothing that compares to the overall experience a person gets
when attending a live SANS conference, such as SANS Security 2008 West
in San Diego, May 9 - 16, https://www.sans.org/securitywest08
However, not everyone can attend a live conference, and SANS @Home is a
great alternative for you if travel costs and/or time constraints are
an issue this year.
The nice thing about SANS @Home is because you don't have to make travel
arrangements to attend, and don't have to participate in the madness of
airport security and jammed airp***s, you can wait until the last week
before the course starts to sign up. That last week is now.
Please note there is special tuition pricing for those who only intend
to prepare for the Security Plus certification. Email athome@sans.org
for your tuition fee and discount code.
WHY SECURITY ESSENTIALS?
Please view the You Tube video from course author Dr. Eric Cole on the
value and uniqueness of Security 401: SANS Security Essentials,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZb0ByAbWs4
If you have already taken SANS Security Essentials, please pass this
note on to those of your colleagues who would benefit, as you have, from
taking this training and acquiring your GIAC certification.
The SANS @Home format, http://www.sans.org/info/23809 is not a one way,
online, no-interaction delivery version of a SANS course, as some might
fear. Far from it. Students interact with the instructor real time via
online chat to raise questions and get clarification while the
instructor is teaching the material, as you can see from student
comments below. The SANS @Home format:
1. Is uniquely designed for professionals who are seeking a flexible
alternative to SANS popular six-day training events. "I like taking
the @home classes because I have time to think and go back and review
the recordings and keep up with the rest of the class through the
week." -Dan Shupe, Batelle
2. Leverages Webcast flexibility and the latest online technology
"Technology works great. It is great to be in class with people from
around the world." -Mark Douches, Quest Diagnostics
3. All sessions can be viewed live and via archive 24/7
"I also appreciate that our sessions are recorded and available to
replay. This is helpful because I know there are one or two live
sessions that I will miss." -Benita Briones, City College of San
Francisco
WHY SECURITY 401: SANS SECURITY ESSENTIALS?
In SANS Security Essentials you will learn the language and underlying
theory of computer security. At the same time you will learn the
essential, up-to-the-minute knowledge and skills required for effective
performance for those who have been given the responsibility for
securing systems within an organization.
No single technology will meet all of an enterprise's security
challenges. However, by implementing a defense in-depth strategy that
includes multiple defensive measures, you can go a long way in securing
your enterprise.
Understanding the paths available to organizations that are considering
or planning to deploy various security devices and tools such as
intrusion detection systems, intrusion prevention systems and firewalls
is just as important as knowing how to protect against these attacks.
Some people make the assumption that this SANS Security Essentials
course is too basic for them. As a consequence, these people are not
aware of how to deal with the most significant network vulnerabilities.
Networks are then even more susceptible to incidents from inside
compared to outside, usually because systems are not properly patched
with the most current updates.
If your organization has a disgruntled employee, your networks are
vulnerable. This leaves you as a security professional vulnerable to
the question from your management, "Why didn't you know about these
vulnerabilities? If you did know, why didn't you do anything about them
to correct the situation and mitigate the organization's risk?"
Throughout this course, you will get hands-on experience with 24 open
source tools that will become part of your toolkit as a GSEC certified
security professionals. Yes, hands-on demonstrations live in a
web-based SANS class.
Save your organization literally hundreds of thousands of dollars over
the course of the next few years by learning where and when to use these
tools. Your mastery of these open source tools will prove invaluable
to you in your network security career.
