"No publicity is bad publicity." I'd bet the Standish Group is banking on that maxim. The little-known research firm's recent Open Source Trends report is not prompting many in the blogosphere to say good things about it. The report claims that open source software is costing traditional software companies $60 billion. But very few seem to be taking the findings seriously — either because they have never heard of the Standish Group before, or because they can't seem to figure out how the researchers reached that particular figure. That's not saying that some wouldn't like it to be true, but they can't validate it, so they discount the finding and the figure. On the other hand, there probably aren't many people in the open source world now who can say they don't know who the Standish Group is. |
