SPORTS SHOOTER Newsletter #110

LEADING OFF
High School Inspiration
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter
April was another tough month Š a controversy over Major League Baseball's credential use agreement threatened whether news organization would cover the baseball, another highly public instance of digital manipulating of a photograph and the continued downward spiral of the newspaper business.

Despite all of the above (and more), April had several inspiring moments for me and I'd like to share one of them.

                        *       *       *
Sports Shooter #110 features two perspectives on digital manipulation of news photographs. A recent incident spurred Greg Cooper and Kim Komenich to contribute their thoughts on the issue.

I didn't want a camera-bashing piece to run in the newsletter I told Preston Mack when he first approached me about an article he wanted to write on why he switched systems. But he had a simple and logical reason why: It was a business decision. This piece will certainly stir up the Canon versus Nikon wars, but if you really read what Preston has written, this is not intended to do that at all. This is a matter of photographers examining their careers and their business and making a decision that is best suited for them.

The winners of the Sports Shooter Newsletter Annual Contest write about their photographs, giving us a behind the scenes look. Gerry Melendez reports on the recent Masters and Al Diaz laments on the passing of a South Florida icon, the Orange Bowl. Gary "Razor" Bogdon contributes this month's Photographer's Toy Box about some cool gadgets he recommends.

"Mad Dogs & Englishmen" (deluxe edition) Joe Cocker's fabulous live album, Moby's new release "Last Night" and "Cowboy Town" from Brooks & Dunn are on heavy rotation on iTunes. On the nightstand are John Bogle's "The Little Book of Common Sense Investing", "High Profile (A Jesse Stone novel) by Robert Parker and "Can I Keep My Jersey?: 11 Teams, 5 Countries, and 4 Years in My Life as a Basketball Vagabond" by Paul Shirley.

"Thou shall not over-tone!'
By Greg Cooper, Brooks Institute

Original image. Cooper shot this for an assignment to photograph fall colors at Western Kentucky University.
At risk of opening a can of wormsŠ

For the past month I have been going through my 35mm film archives, putting them in a manageable order so I can start to scan them. What a daunting process.

One benefit spending so much time on organizing has been re-living certain turning points in my life that I had long forgotten including one where I made an ethical call that I now question.

Burning Desire
By Kim Komenich, San Francisco Chronicle

Greetings from the "He's Got Way Too Much Time on His Hands" department here at Sports Shooter. Today we're going to look into the origin of the name of one of the buttons in Photoshop.

(There are some Sports Shooter readers who might never have made a darkroom print. If this is true in your case, the next paragraph is for you. If you're an old hand in the darkroom, you are authorized to skip it.)

Nestled between the Sharpen and the Pen tool buttons in CS3 you'll find the "Dodge/Burn/Saturation tool" button. While the saturation tool is a relatively modern control, the dodge and burn tools are holdovers from the earliest days of photography.

Photographer Discusses His Decision To Make 'The Switch'
Florida freelancer switches from Canon to Nikon.
By Preston Mack

"The cover image doesn't look in focus."
My decision to switch camera systems from Canon to Nikon was cemented when I heard those words from an art director. It was a cover shoot of seven executives who are based all across the United States. They gather once a year for their annual convention. It was a simple, four light shoot, with an exposure of 1/250th at f6.3 at 250 ASA. Problem was, I was shooting with a 1D Mark III, Canon's flagship camera.

Outside The Ropes
An Insider's Look At The Masters
By Gerry Melendez, The State

Everything you've heard about the Masters is true. No Shooting inside the ropes. Yep. Rain at some point during the week. Yep. Patrons suddenly blocking your once-in-a-lifetime Tiger holing it out on Sunday shot. Yep. Saying you're never going to put yourself through this torture ever again. Yep. Coming back the next year. Yep.
Ok, seriously, the Masters is truly one of the most memorable events a photographer will ever cover. From the time you set foot inside Augusta National and walk past the main scoreboard on No. 1, to the last putt on 18, there's nothing like it. Very few sporting events make old men laugh like children and young men smoke cigars as if celebrating the birth of their child.

Photo Of The Year: 'Eye Gouge'
'And somehow, he wasn't seriously injured and a foul wasn't called.'
By Chris Detrick, The Salt Lake Tribune

It was just going to be another routine Saturday night basketball game. My assignment was simple enough: to make pictures at the Brigham Young vs. Pepperdine men's basketball game in Provo, Utah. I arrived at the Marriott Center and positioned myself along the baseline on the side BYU was shooting at first. I was using two Canon Mark IIn's; with a 16-35 on one body and a 70-200 on the other

Best Action: 'Broken Leg'
'A lump formed in my throat as I fought back tears.'
By Jamie Rhodes

There are times in life when we have to grit our teeth and gut it out during miserable shooting situations. Halfway into my second day straight of pouring rain during the Breeders Cup Championships on October 26th and 27th in Monmouth Park, New Jersey, I feared I would be hard-pressed to produce any quality images from the event.

No College No Pro: 'Shadows'
'Each time, I would photograph the Titans on a sunny afternoon, I would spend a little time playing with the light.'
By Scott Strazzante, Chicago Tribun
e

As a photographer at the Chicago Tribune, I am assigned to cover a wide variety of sports on a wide variety of levels.
I love the challenge of making unique images at huge events like the Super Bowl, the World Series and the Olympics but still my heart lies with the high school athlete.

Winning Moments: Best Feature: 'Better Bring Your Popcorn'
'T.O. is touchdown theater.'
By Albert Dickson, Sporting News

There is a rule in event photography, a rule frequently not followed, that you should keep your eye to the camera well after the action of the play is done. No chimping until later, folks.

Take this rule and magnify its importance tenfold when you deal with some of the true showmen of the NFL.

Winning Moments: Best Sports Picture Story: 'Sumo Boys'
'Eye candy is entertaining for a second or two then it leaves a whole in your teeth and nothing for the brain.'
By Steven Achiam

About editing a sports story with photojournalistic eyes: Let me tell you that I don't see myself as a sports photographer but I entered the competition as a photojournalist telling a story in a sports environment.

Winning Moments: Best Student Sports Photo: 'Crash'
'It was luck, skill and preparation. But mostly luck.'
By Ashley Page Wilkerson

The sun beat down on my forehead because I stupidly don't own a baseball cap. As a female, I am fortunate enough not to sweat; I glisten. And I was glistening a lot that day. I had spent most the Saturday morning trying to quickly navigate around drunken college students on congested sidewalks, only to compete with them again for rail space to view the bike riders coming around the turn.
At Indiana University in Bloomington, the Little 500 bike race is a big deal. It's a cherished tradition that began in 1951 and raises money for scholarships by imitating the Indianapolis 500.

Sports Shooter News & Notes
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter

Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp in September?
We are in the early stages of planning the next Sports Shooter educational program and I am asking for your help.

The Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp is tentatively scheduled for September 12 - 13, 2008 in Southern California. The format of the Boot Camp will be two day-long workshops on two specific topics.

Day 1 will be a lighting seminar where participants will divided into small groups (6-8) and will rotate through several portrait shooting situations. Participants will be designing their own lighting and shooting subjects under the guidance of a workshop faculty member. There will be 3 - 4 different situations the groups will rotate through during the day. Lighting will range from "in the bag"-small strobes all the way up to multiple power-pack Dyna-Lites. In the evening the faculty will help participants edit their work, providing critiques and advance one-on-one. The best work of the day will be shown at the end of the evening and prizes awarded to the top photos.

Day 2 will be a football seminar, with participants shooting a local junior college game under the guidance of the Boot Camp faculty. The day will begin with a lecture on the intricacies of shooting football before heading off to the stadium. The evening will be comprised of editing and one-on-one critiques. The best work of the day will be shown at the end of the evening session and prizes will be given to recognize the top photographs.

These two workshops will be available to be taken individually or you will be able to register for both. A pricing structure will offer a discount if you register for both sessions. The Boot Camp is open to both working photographers and college students.

Nikon has agreed to sponsor the Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp and DYna-Lite will be supporting the lighting session. Both companies will have equipment available to loan to participants to use during the workshop.

If you are interested in attending the Boot Camp, please email me to let me know: bert@sportsshooter.com.

As I mentioned earlier, this event at the moment is tentative. If there is enough photographers and college students that want to hang out for the weekend, learn about different lighting techniques and/or sharpen your football shooting we will hold this educational program.

Mahalo!

Sad Goodbye To The Orange Bowl
By Al Diaz, Miami Herald

At this point there is only about a third of the structure left standing.

It sure is a sad sight from the 836 Dolphin Expressway. I pass it daily on my way to the office. It's like watching a family member suffer a slow painful death.

15" Neoprene Sleeve for MacBook Pro: http://www.goincase.com
It's getting close to the travel season again with spring upon us and summer not that far off. So for this installment of Razor's Favorite Things, I thought I would write about a few items that I've found to be very helpful for the traveler. After doing my fair share of travel, both international and domestic, I've found a few items that I would like to share.

By Mister X

Can you tell who this Atlanta 150 driver is?
I pulled into the hotel valet *** and was promptly greeted by a hip, young kid in a red waistcoat. "Mr. X?" he asked knowingly.

"Yep. And you must be Donnie, fastest DL the Dawgs have ever had," I replied.

Penn Camera News, Views and Ramblings for April
By Elbert Morris

Nikon 18-200 Zoom
Now that Baseball has started we can count on spring weather being with us for more than a day or two at a time. And how about Felipe Lopez of them Nationals, Grand slam in the 6th against the Mets.

I don't know about the rest of you but I can use a lot of warm weather. Locally, we have had a good run from our Pro Teams. The Capitals managed to get into the playoffs for the first time in years. The Wizards start with Cleveland for the third straight year. The Nationals we will skip a report on. Hopefully the Pope having Mass at the stadium will change their luck. Nothing like playing on blessed ground I hope.

Product News:
Nikon
The Nikon D300 and D3 are both open stock now so if you are interested in either and want a SS special price on them you should give me a call at Penn Camera.

And a new Point & Shoot camera. Nikon just introduced a new model called the P80. It's a 10 MP camera with an 18X (27-486mm equiv) Zoom. It should retail for $399.99 when it is released in May.
