STEVEN IVORY: Obama Moves

*As late as a few months ago, I was on the fence regarding Barack=20
Obama. But even after I'd embraced his political ideals, it was a=20
seemingly immaterial revelation that sealed the deal for me.

I discovered the man had rhythm.=20=20=20=20

By sheer happenstance I was watching the local news one Sunday=20
evening, when I caught footage from earlier that day of Obama standing=20
in the pulpit of one of Los Angeles' prominent black churches. As the=20
choir raised the roof, Obama, while respectful of his surroundings,=20
subtly swayed in a fashion that was anything but obligatory. Curiously=20
impressed, I needed to see more.=20

I did, sometime later, when I caught him on the Ellen DeGeneres=20
show. DeGeneres encourages her guests to enter dancing, and Obama=20
wasn't shy, joining DeGeneres on stage, where they danced together.=20

Although he seemed to hold back in honor of DeGeneres' forever=20
corny moves, bless her heart (some people think John Travolta can dance,=
=20
too), I was sold. Since then, I've seen TV news footage of Obama shaking=
=20
a tail feather several times on the campaign trail. I'm satisfied.

I know what you're thinking: what the hell does dancing have to=20
do with one's ability to run the country? Well, dancing, in and of=20
itself, nothing. But in the past, my vote has gone to candidates for=20
reasons beyond insignificant. I have voted for people simply because=20
they WEREN'T their opponent, the flawed strategy being to vote for the=20
proverbial "lesser evil." The truth is that I have never entered a=20
polling place feeling like I had a real choice. Obama could change that=20
for me.=20=20

To me, Obama's willingness to dance in public--not just move, but=20
risk conjuring archaic stereotypes by seriously finding himself a=20
groove--is directly affixed to his inclination to talk TO the people, as=
=20
opposed to talking AT us.

His dance is connected to my reality. Whereas the current=20
administration's distinct lack of rhythm and rhyme has obliterated any=20
morsel of reason, Obama's is the dance of someone who doesn't
want to die in a nuclear attack, just like me.=20

Though he can well afford the skyrocketing cost of living, Obama,=20
unlike the other candidates, impresses me as someone who knows=20
personally people for whom today's treacherous food and gas prices pose=20
a problem. He dances like someone who wishes the drama America has=20
created for itself here and abroad would cease. He moves to music like=20
any number of people I know. As inconsequential as that seems, I've=20
never been able to say that about a Presidential candidate.=20

More important, Obama's compassionate, frank and uncomplicated=20
conversation regarding change, while long overdue in the political=20
arena, is right on time. Wary of a trap door, I am ready to believe=20
that Obama's heartening, straightforward message, buttressed by his=20
seamless facility to boogie one minute and talk foreign policy the next,=
=20
can make a difference.=20=20=20=20

Unlike the Boogaloo, Cabbage Patch or the Running Man, Obama's jig=20
doesn't have a name. It's quintessential Grown n' Sexy: laid-back,=20
middle-aged house party moves dictated by the response of one's spirit=20
to a beat. "I ain't askin' for a cartwheel, a somersault or no flip,"=20
sang the Dramatics during their 1971 plea, "Get Up and Get Down," a=20
lyric to which Obama duly abides. Ain't a whole lot going on. His feet=20
don't move much; it's mostly arms, narrow hips and 100 percent attitude.=
=20
It's a muted workout typical of the suit-wearing, Lexus-driving,=20
Courvoisier-sippin' Buppie in the club with a good gov'ment job livin'=20
for the weekend.=20

Just think--with Obama as President, America wouldn't have to face=20
the globally CNN-beamed embarrassment of having a rhythm-challenged=20
commander-in-chief who can't bust a move at those festive welcome=20
ceremonies that countries stage for visiting dignitaries. However,=20
Obama's funky moves might be lost on the Kremlin.=20=20

All kidding aside, the brutal truth is that if Obama wins the=20
national election, he will become President of a great nation in crisis.=
=20
He is going to have to do more than dance.=20

However, if Obama can run the country as he has choreographed his=20
campaign thus far--bobbing and weaving through the muck and mire with=20
equal parts dignity and dynamism--then, in the immortal words of Mr.=20
James Brown, who brilliantly negotiated a move or two, let a man come in=
=20
and do the Popcorn.

THE BRIDGE: Let It Go
-- by Darryl James

*Most Americans subscribe to a religion--Christian, Muslim, Jew,=20
Hindu, etc. With those subscriptions come admonishments to forgive, but=20
how many actually can do what is required to actually forgive?

And even amongst those who can forgive, how many can truly let go=
=20
and keep on forgiving year after year after year?

Perhaps representing the universal sentiment of forgiveness,=20
Mahatma Ghandi once said "You can ask me to forgive, but if you ask me=20
to forget, you are asking me to give up my experiences."

Ghandi, a man recognized as an agent of peace, was all about=20
forgiving, but still held on to the experience and refused to=20
intentionally forget.

But how many of us have actually internalized the true meaning of=20
the word forgiveness?

What the words of Ghandi actually dictate is that we hold on to=20
the experience that required forgiveness so that it may shield us from=20
repeating it, but clearly, it is in the best interest of our emotional=20
health to forgive.

Perhaps some dear friend has committed a crime of distrust.

Or, perhaps a family member has committed a crime of deceit,=20
theft, or mistrust.

And, for those of us who love, a lover may have committed a crime=20
of infidelity.

Let's discuss the last one for a moment.

How many of us have relationships that were killed because we=20
could not forgive?

Instead of forgiving the person and allowing them to have a second=
=20
chance, many of us choose to move on and take a new chance with a=20
stranger who may repeat the offense or commit a new one. An old saying=20
goes: "The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know."

Think about it: A lover has a lapse of judgement that brings you=20
pain. But perhaps the lapse really was a lapse and will never occur=20
again. Is it really worth the time and effort required to leave and=20
start anew, taking yet another chance on someone new who may hurt you in=
=20
new and different, or even worse ways?

A friend has a moment of weakness and betrays your trust or cheats=
=20
you. But the moment of weakness may dictate that the friend really=20
needs you, and seeing him or her through that moment may make your=20
friendship stronger and that person whole.

A close family member cheats you or steals money from you. In the=
=20
end, you weren't put out badly and the loved one absolutely needed the=20
money. Perhaps it changed or even saved their life and they are now=20
carrying the resulting guilt and would never repeat the transgression.

In all of these cases, forgiveness may be in order.

Sometimes, it appears that the bad things that other people do to=20
us are so egregious that we are certain they mean no good for us and=20
must be removed from our lives permanently. If such is the case, we can=20
forgive them and keep them away from the closeness given before the=20
transgression or never allow them near us again.

But what if the committed offense is not symptomatic of a dark=20
heart with malevolent intent?

THE MO'KELLY REPORT: Mo'Kelly FULLY Supports Rev. Jeremiah Wright

*For all individuals misled about the true nature of Rev. Jeremiah=20
Wright, this editorial is for you. Enjoy. Be sure to follow ALL of the=20
links before formulating any ill-conceived response in an effort to=20
discredit Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Jeremiah Wright - "The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as=
=20
a means of genocide against people of color."

As long as The Tuskegee Experiment is a factual portion of American=20
history...Jeremiah Wright is reasonable in his expression of such an=20
opinion. The study, monitoring the effects of untreated syphilis=20
continued for 40 years, between 1932 and 1972...well within most of our=20
lifetimes. Jeremiah Wright and others have FIRSTHAND memories of this=20
atrocity. So yes, this country has a documented and FACTUAL history of=20
medical/biological warfare against African-Americans.

Jeremiah Wright - "We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we=20
nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we=20
never batted an eye. "We have supported state terrorism against the=20
Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because=20
the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own=20
front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost."

It has been long held that the United States did not NEED to=20
specifically bomb CIVILIAN targets in order to ensure the eventual=20
surrender of Japan. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were payback=20
for Pearl Harbor (a military installation). You can best believe than an=
=20
A-Bomb on a Japanese military installation would surely have also done=20
the trick. The civilian threat would have been implied and did not need=20
to be acted upon. The fact is that the targeting of civilians is not a=20
"weapon" first implemented by terrorists...or at least not Islamic ones.=
=20
HERE, you can find a quick and concise history lesson.

Or, one can refer to our involvement in the Iraq-Iran war, in the hopes=
=20
of "payback" against Iran and Syria. Iran was only slightly "pissed" at=20
the U.S. for trying to intervene during its revolution of the late=20
1970s. To which, the Iran hostage crisis was born. (Donald Rumsfeld=20
pictured left shaking hands with Saddam Hussein, Dec. 1983).

Our "involvement" in interests counter to Iranian sovereignty date=
=20
back even to 1953 when the CIA and British intelligence agencies helped=20
fund/stage a coup of a DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED Iranian Prime Minister. In=
=20
other words, the U.S. has been "meddling" in Iranian affairs for more=20
than 50 years. So yes, Iran probably doesn't think too highly of our=20
present involvement in Iraq/Middle East and it should be noted that=20
we've played a significant and documented historical role as to why.=20
It's factually inaccurate to allege that the U.S. has always been in the=
=20
business of "exporting" democracy.

BETWEEN THE LINES: The Relative Truth Of This Presidential Election Is=20
'WWWPD' (What Would White People Do?)
-- by Anthony Asadullah Samad

*The Pennsylvania Primary unveiled the stark realities of what=20
this Presidential election is about-in terms of the other candidates,=20
the media and, of course, the electorate.

It's no secret I'm for Barack Obama, but I'm also for fair play.=20
I'm also for genuine processes. I have an aversion to disingenuous=20
processes and this national election is beginning to look pretty=20
disingenuous.

Watching the media frame lies as "episodes" and close races as=20
"big victories" is a little overwhelming. It kind of reminds me of the=20
disingenuous periods of American history where we were told if we were=20
hardworking and honest, got education-we would be equal; then if we got=20
political power (right to vote), we would be equal, when neither were=20
true in the absolute sense since economics has always been the real=20
equalizer.

To act if race didn't have an impact on Pennsylvania (as Ed=20
Rendell said it would) and that codified racial messages haven't become=20
dominant themes in this election that both Clinton and McCain are=20
playing to (and benefiting from) is simply disingenuous. Rendell knew=20
what some white people would do.

The sliding truth "goal posts" on the Democratic side and the=20
"selective amnesia" on the Republican side are going to undermine=20
America's system and the lack of integrity that the country has in the=20
global community will evidence itself on the domestic front.

In the final analysis, this election is going to test the moral=20
compass of the dominate population (69%) in this country as to whether=20
they've moved past race and are prepared to do what's right AND just. To=
=20
many of them, the truth is relative. Part of the socio-political justice=
=20
problem in America is we (Black Americans, and everybody else) never=20
know what we're dealing with when it comes to integrity of white people=20
on hidden racial biases. Like any other race, there's good, and there's=20
bad, then there's mostly indifferent who tolerate the bad and obliterate=
=20
the good.

ANGELA BASSETT CHECKS INTO NBC'S 'ER': Actress to join cast next season=20
as a regular.

*Angela Bassett will become a regular cast member on NBC's "ER"=20
next year during its 15th and final season. The role will be her first=20
full-time gig on a televisionseries.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the actress will play a=20
tough attending physician with a troubled past who returns to Chicago=20
from Indonesia, where she was involved in tsunami relief. Her arrival in=
=20
the second episode next season promises to shake up the staff at County=20
General.

=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"Angela is a wonderfully talented actress whom I've long hoped to=
=20
work with," said "ER" exec producer John Wells.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
In addition to Bassett, original cast member Noah Wyle will join=20
"ER" next season in at least four of the show's planned 19 episodes.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Bassett, whose husband is actor Courtney B. Vance welcomed twins=20
in January 2006 via a surrogate mother. She recently wrapped the B.I.G.=20
biopic "Notorious."

WHITNEY HOUSTON BOMBS IN TOBAGO: EbonyJet.com review says she was=20=20=20
'flat, hoarse, listless' and kept shouting out the wrong island.

*EbonyJet.com was in Tobago over the weekend to catch a concert=20
event featuring Whitney Houston as a headline. Unfortunately, the=20
performance was reviewed as a disaster.

The following are excerpts from the review at EbonyJet.com:

Houston, 44, banned photographers and the media from getting=20
within 200 yards of her on Sunday night at the Plymouth Jazz Festival=20
stage.
Nervous, no doubt about the quality of her voice, the ex-Mrs. Brown kept=
=20
telling the Tobago audience how happy she was to be in Trinidad.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Unfortunately, she had good reason to be nervous. After such a=20
long time away from the stage, Houston's flat, horse and listeless voice=
=20
was a big disappointment to those who knew the power she commanded at=20
the height of her career.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
All that said, Houston looked great, decked out in a=20
form-fitting white gown. And given the fact that this is her first real=20
concert date since her December 2006 appearance in Malaysia, you gotta=20
give the sister credit for at least showing up on time for her=20
30-minute, seven-song set.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Houston started out with "It's Not Right, But It's OK," a song=20
that few folks in the audience appeared to know, and followed it up with=
=20
an old favorite "Step by Step." As peppy as that tune is, Houston failed=
=20
to get much of a rise out of the audience, many of whom had come extra=20
early to make sure they got a good spot on the lawn.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
After her second song, Houston paid tribute to Diana Ross,=20
Smokey Robinson and En Vogue who had performed on Friday and Saturday=20
nights. On "Saving All My Love For You," another song that should have=20
brought the capacity crowd to their feet, Houston's voice cracked.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"I don't think the voice is still there," said one patron on his=
=20
way out. He probably felt the same way about her delivery on "I'll=20
Always Love You" since she missed all the notes that once made that=20
ballad one of her signature tunes. The folks who had paid $120 (general=20
admission) were already a little unhappy but after that song they=20
stopped applauding.

CHAKA KHAN MUST PAY $1.3M JUDGMENT: Singer and son must compensate=20
family of teen killed in their home.

*Los Angeles newspaper Daily Breeze is reporting that Chaka Khan=20
and her son Damien Holland have been ordered to pay more than $1.3=20
million to the family of a teen who was killed in their home following a=
=20
dispute in 2004.

According to court records, Superior Court Judge Bob Hight=20
approved a default judgment against them in November for more than $1.3=20
million, plus interest, after Khan and Holland failed to respond to the=20
lawsuit.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Khan's manager, Tammy McCrary, said Friday that the singer never=20
received the lawsuit and knew nothing about the judgment.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The family of 17-year-old Christopher Bailey filed a wrongful=20
death and negligence lawsuit against Khan and Holland, 29, after a jury=20
acquitted Holland of Bailey's murder in May 2006.

Holland shot Bailey in the face with an M-16 assault rifle on=20
Sept. 24, 2004. During the trial, Holland admitted he had a friend punch=
=20
him in the face and initially lied to the police to make it seem as if=20
Bailey attacked him. He also testified he was upset because Bailey was=20
having an affair with his girlfriend, but that the gun went off=20
accidentally.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Bailey, in pursuit of a rap career, moved in with Khan and her=20
family to work with Holland in their studio.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Bailey's parents filed the wrongful death and negligence suit in=20
September 2006 against Khan, Holland, Khan's mother and Khan's company.=20
While Khan and Holland never responded to the lawsuit, Khan's mother,=20
Sandra Coleman, settled with Bailey's family for $500,000, court records=
=20
show.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
However, the family contends that was only half of what they=20
agreed to.

JEREMIAH WRIGHT ALL OVER TV MONDAY: Will presence help or hurt Barack=20
Obama's campaign?

*Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama's former=20
pastor Jeremiah Wright spoke at an NAACP dinner Sunday and at the=20
National Press Club on Monday - with both events covered heavily by the=20
national media.

In Sunday's speech before thousands at the NAACP's Freedom Fund=20
dinner in Detroit, Rev. Wright said that his sermons - deemed=20
controversial among some circles - have been "descriptive" but "not=20
divisive."

"I describe the conditions in this country," he said during his=20
lively keynote address. "Conditions divide, not my descriptions."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"I am sorry your local political analysts and your neighboring=20
county executives think my being here is polarizing and my sermons are=20
divisive, but I'm not here to address an analyst's opinion," he said. "I=
=20
am here to address your 2008 theme =85 (of) change is going to come."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Yesterday, Wright delivered a speech about the black religious=20
experience to an audience of 300 at the National Press Club in=20
Washington D.C.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
He said the theology of the black church is a "theology of=20
liberation, it is a theology of transformation and it is ultimately a=20
theology of reconciliation." He also said the black religious tradition,=
=20
despite its long history, is in some ways "invisible to the dominant=20
culture."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Wright seemed to enjoy his chance to finally take questions from=20
the press. Rejecting those who have labeled him unpatriotic, he said:=20
"I served six years in the military. Does that make me patriotic? How=20
many years did (Vice President Dick) Cheney serve?"
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Later, he added: "My goddaughter's unit just arrived in Iraq this=
=20
week while those who call me unpatriotic have used their positions of=20
privilege to avoid military service while sending over 4,000 American=20
boys and girls to die over a lie."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
In a sermon days after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Wright said=20
"America's chickens are coming home to roost." Asked Monday what he=20
meant by "suggesting that the United States brought the terrorist=20
attacks on itself,"
Wright challenged the reporter questioning him.

"Have you heard the whole sermon?" he responded. "No. You haven't=
=20
heard the whole sermon. That nullifies that question."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20

"We are thrilled to be working again with Ellen, the=20
quintessential entertainer, who has been a part of the American Express=20
family for years," said Deborah Curtis, AMEX's Vice President of=20
Advertising. "Both she and Beyonc=E9 truly know what it means to engage=20
and delight audiences."

The new television spot began airing yesterday (April 28) via=20
major broadcast outlets.=20=20

PAPOOSE VS. BED STUY PARAMEDICS: Rapper may face lawsuit over ambulance=20
used in latest video.

*The Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corps. (BSVAC) is=20
threatening to sue rapper Papoose for duping them into allowing their=20
ambulance and paramedics to be part of a song promoting violence.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"His people told us the video would be about the neighborhood and=20
how we respond to save lives," said BSVAC founder Rocky Robinson of the=20
rapper's video for "Ambulance." However, the track contains violent=20
lyrics likely directed toward rival rapper Leonard (Uncle Murder) Grant.

Papoose raps in the song: "In the back of that ambulance truck=20
I'll put you're a**. In the back of that ambulance truck you die slow.=20=
=20
=85Now they're asking your name, your age, you address, but you can't give=
=20
an answer. You breathing your last breath."

"We don't want to be a part of something where somebody gets=20
hurt,"
said Robinson, who says his group is now planning legal action against=20
the artist. He "probably hasn't got much, but we'll sue anyway. Our=20
image is everything to us."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Papoose is engaged to rapper Remy Ma, who faces up to 25 years=20
in jail for shooting a woman outside a nightclub in Manhattan's=20
Meatpacking District.

AL REYNOLDS PARTYING IN MIAMI: Plus, another 'source' blames money=20
disparity for breakup.

*The New York Daily News gossip pages have quoted another source=20
close to divorcing couple Star Jones and Al Reynolds who pins the demise=
=20
of their marriage on Star being the main bread winner.

The paper's new "Full Disclosure" column stated Monday:
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The beginning of the end was reportedly last summer in=20
Saint-Tropez, where the couple loudly fought on the beach over Star=20
being Al's sugar mama. One friend recounted an incident where Al refused=
=20
to pay for beach chairs, demanding that Star fork over the cash.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"She paid for everything. He never even took out his wallet,"=20
the pal snitched.
For the past year, the pair have been living separately, because of Al's=
=20
job as a professor of social science at Florida Memorial University in=20
Miami Gardens (they actually do give degrees; we checked).

But Reynolds hasn't exactly been missing his wife's company.

"When he is in Miami, he's always on the beach or at the pool at=
=20
the Delano," a pal in South Beach tells us. Reynolds reportedly works on=
=20
his tan all day, then parties hard at night. "He hits Mansion, Priv=E9,=20
Mokai and the Florida Room at the Delano four nights a week."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
And he isn't alone.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"Al always has a posse of hot young dudes and scantily clad=20
women with him," our spy says. "He brings strippers back from Gold Rush=20
strip bar to the Delano and dirty dances all night long."

OPRAH'S TOM CRUISE SECRETS REVEALED: Interview to include questions=20
about Scientology and Matt Lauer in addition to the couch jumping.

*Someone attending a Las Vegas taping of "The Oprah Winfrey Show"=
=20
over the weekend defied orders from producers and told a news outlet=20
about Winfrey's own account of her interview with Tom Cruise, which is=20
due to air in two parts on Friday and May 5.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
During the taping at Caesars Palace, a Harpo staffer hit the=20
stage and asked audience members not to repeat anything they were about=20
to see or hear. They were even made to repeat several times in unison,=20
"What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
But one member of the audience apparently buckled and ran to E!=20
Online, who reported Monday that Winfrey told the audience that her=20
Cruise interview included questions about Scientology, his contentious=20
interview with Matt Lauer on the "Today" show and, of course, the=20
infamous couch-jumping incident.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The first of the two-part Cruise one-on-one has already taken=20
place at his estate in Telluride, Colo., Winfrey said. "Oprah said Tom=20
gave her a ride on a snowmobile," the audience member recounted. "She=20
also said Katie and Suri were there for the interview, too."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
As previously reported, the Telluride segment is set to air=20
Friday. Then on May 5, Cruise will be interviewed by Winfrey at her=20
studio in Chicago. Meanwhile, the Vegas episode feturing Tina Turner and=
=20
Cher is scheduled to air May 8.
