Hi Agnes,

I have a slightly different perspective. When I did the LIS Masters 10 years ago (at Strathclyde), I was surprised at how little cataloguing and classification were covered. A couple of lectures on each, with no assessed work. We were told that since so much of this was automated now we didn't need to look at it in detail. I presumed that that was the way LIS courses would be going. Unfortunately, when I was looking for jobs most employers still thought I would have these skills, so I felt like a bit of a fraud and it was hard to sell myself.

As for Information Management, my course shared quite a few core modules with the IM course at Strathclyde. There were also a number of optional modules we could both do. So there are overlaps, although IM has a decidedly more business/commercial application. LIS may be more flexible, although it depends on your interests and strengths. Research the courses, because they all have a different emphasis. I didn't!

Good luck

Darren

So, you're volunteering, and without a librarianship qualification, you are doing (and hating) cataloguing - well the news is, inputting stuff into an already configured computer system isn't cataloguing as 'cataloguing' requires to be understood from a professional point of view. What you'll get from a Librarianship course is an understanding of the semantic and other features of knoweldege that allow different methods of 'organisation' - this is absolutely invaluable to a future in research - your skills will not be matched by any other in this respect. Assume that the Librarianship course will enable you to be the most skilled information detective there is.

Martin,

There is a OLIB users web site available that you can also post these types of questions to fellow OCLC product customers (http://olibusers.oclc.org/).

The site does require an account which you can obtain from the OCLC UK support desk.

I hope this route may also be of help.

You are probably already well on the way, but these still might be useful points of reference:

You could have a look at the Zachman framework for the development of an enterprise architecture. It's not specifically IA, but generally well-aligned:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zachman_framework

If you haven't already, grab a copy of the Polar Bear book:

http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/infotecture2/

It's for the web, but the underlying principles are the same.

As for advice, it's obvious, but easy to forget - remember the context of what you are doing (the answer to "Why am I doing this?", and take your strategy from that.

Audrey, if you have not resolved this issue yet, you need to contact addressmaintenance@royalmail.com and ask them to amend their Postcode Address File (PAF) with your postcode. It seems they have a "latent" list which is not activated until requested.

Hi Audrey,

If the insurance companies, etc that you are contacting can't find your postcode it's their fault not yours! If the Post Office has issued you with a postcode then any up-to-date system these companies are using should have the information. Be firm with them. Tell them it's a new property (although it's six months since you moved in so it's not that new), give them the date you move in and then tell to update their systems more regularly if they wish to gain your custom. You can be sure that the police, tv licensing and the utilities companies would have no problem finding you because they are updating their records all the time.

I had this problem a couple of years ago when some dozy dollop told me my street didn't exist and that I should have my new oven and hob delivered to another address where I could go and collect it!

Good luck!

I don't know if this helps, but Royal Mail have some different ideas to where a house is located than others. I know of several addresses that appear to be located on a main thoroughfare, but Royal Mail locates them in a road leading off because that is the access point for the postman to deliver. So if you think you live in John Street the postman might consider it to be Jill Street. Crazy or what?

Not crazy at all. The purpose of a postcode is to help deliver mail. Inevitably when postcodes are appropriated for other purposes there will be anomalies. Different geographies conflict (although there are always attempts to get them coincident). It happens everywhere, e.g. Postally a place may be in a different province (A) than it is administratively (B), because mail must go through a postal sorting & delivery centre in A, rather than B (e.g. there is a mountain in the way). There are places in Austria that have German postcodes and places in Italy that have Swiss ones.

It may be worth enquiring to Rapra Technology, who are specialist information providers on polymer-related subjects, both business and technical. I had better disclose that I used to work for them, but they are a good source for any kind of market data related to rubber and plastics.

The issue you have is one of scale. If you want the time saving option you would need to spend money to obtain a long list (say 100,000 companies) with the accounting reference dates. Otherwise, the free (but time consuming option) is to go the Webcheck part of the Companies House website and search on individual companies one by one. Then you would need to decide what number of companies is statistically relevant (I'd say anything between 1000 and 5000).

Good luck

Hi Joe

I work for a credit reference agency called Top Service Ltd. Although we specialise in the construction industry we have a dataset of all UK limited companies. I asked our IT team to run a quick query and they came up with the following results for companies who had filed a set of accounts over a 12 month period between June 2006 and July 2007:

Year end Jan - 5%
Year end Feb - 4%
Year end Mar - 27%
Year end Apr - 9%
Year end May - 6%
Year end Jun - 7%
Year end Jul - 4%
Year end Aug - 4%
Year end Sep - 6%
Year end Oct - 5%
Year end Nov - 4%
Year end Dec - 19%

I hope this helps, but if you need any more info just drop me an email at lisa.cardus@top-service.co.uk.

I was thinking about this same question myself!

The google ODP and Yahoo Directory seems like a good impartial starting place.

Of course, knowing which ones are any good or rated is a different question altogether. I suspect Investment forums where investors hang out would know which Hedge funds are worthwhile.

http://digbig.com/4wtkj

I was interested in the question, as clearly the worlds superrich and who control this p***t are the people who set up and control hedge funds. So very interesting to investigate!

I am trying to work out which local authorities are the biggest by number of employees.

I have found one for Scotland. I have also found lists that give size by population and lists that give more general stats on public sector employees within a particular region, but nothing more specific. I know the Office of National Statistics used to do something like this but have discontinued it.

At the moment I'm having to go through each one individually for England & Wales! Does anyone have any ideas on where I might get a list from?

Volume 2 of the The Municipal Year Book (which should be available in any decent public reference library) has a statistical section in which authorities are listed showing, among other things, numbers of full time and part time staff. The listing is alphabetical by authority, but it is fairly easy to pick out the authorities with the largest number of employees by scanning down the relevant columns. Birmingham seems to employ the largest number of people among UK authorities.

There appears to be an associated website for the MYB
www.LocalGov.co.uk which might render up the same information, but I haven't explored it.

Hope this helps.

At the moment I am logging each publication into Excel and inputting cover date and date received as our main way of monitoring our archive. However, it is difficult to spot when something has not been received and I would be really interested to see if anyone is in a similar position or if someone could recommend a product.

Does anyone have any recommendations for or feedback on Internet research software or post-search tools for saving Web pages and clippings with adding notes and highlighting capability. Have already looked at SurfSaver, KnowledgeWorkshop, Keepoint, Cartagio, iMiser Research Assistant and Surfulater.
We require an in-house application not web-based social or externally-hosted solutions.
Thanks
Chris

I totally rely on Netsnippets Professional, which has a superb report building feature and excellent service. Unfortunately, they shut shop last year, though they still offer some support. It may be worth pleading with them to buy a download - I know I couldn't work without it!

Please let me know what you eventually choose.

[296350] PCs and public access

We want to put together guidelines for staff at drop in centres where PCs are available for public access. Some centres have 24 hour access, unstaffed some of the time. Areas we need to cover would include keeping PCs in good working order and preventing users from accessing pornography or downloading harmful files. The guidelines must be suitable for staff without much technical expertise.

Can anyone recommend a good book or website which takes a practical approach?

Many thanks

Have a look at Deep Freeze which restores the PC settings to their original state after each user session. This also protects from system state changes.

FreePint 251 has been published and is available at

http://www.freepint.com/issues/

In this issue:

* "UK Government Information on the Internet". The sheer breadth and scope of information available online from the UK government can be both a blessing and a curse, especially as many of the legacy sites are being consolidated or updated. Adrian Janes provides some time-saving tips for more quickly locating the answers you need in sites and directories maintained by the British government.

* "Develop Your Independent Business: Using Information Strategically". Independent information professionals may work outside the corporate fold, but that doesn’t excuse them from the critical tasks of auditing their own businesses and strategic planning. Joanna Ptolemy shares her own process for finding, using, synthesising and delivering the information from her independent practice to the most important client of all - herself.

Also recently Added to the FUMSI Database:

* "The Greening of a Business: Beyond the Bottom Line"

[296371] First Computerized Book (e-book)
http://www.freepint.com/go/b296371

Author:Larry Keith
Date:24/04/2008 02:16 pm
Category:Computers and Software

On February 24, 1987 I received a Certificate of Copyright for my computerized book (e-book) from the US Library of Congress. When I called them earlier to ask about the process of copyrighting an electronic book the person working at the Library of Congress said that she was not sure because I may have the first one ever submitted. The Library of Congress control number for this publication is 87003444.

I would like to know whether or not this publication is, indeed, the first computerized book ever copyrighted. As I am now retired, this would be a historic notable for me if it is true. I do not have extensive searching capabilities and have been a long time subscriber to FreePint so this seems to be a good place to ask what I think is an interesting question (i.e., What was the first copyrighted computerized book / e-book?).

Thanks for any help in answering this intriguing question.

[296861] Alphabetical order
http://www.freepint.com/go/b296861

Author:Mary O'Sullivan

Category:Information Issues

I am not a librarian or information professional but do like to keep my vast numbers of books and cds in some kind of order - books by author, films by film name.

Now here is the question - how do you put them in alphabetical order? What are the simplest rules for dealing with things like Mc, Mac, O'blah, von, A, The, numbers in titles, etc etc. And should you go word by word, letter by letter.

Sorry if this seems like a daft question.

Not a daft question at all. Librarians have a set of rules for alphabetisation, contained in the Anglo American cataloguing Rules, because it helps both staff and users find things if the majority of libraries use the same system.
In your own collection the important thing is to devise a rule that suits you and stick to it; it doesn't have to be the same as the libraries use.
Here’s my thoughts, although I haven’t catalogued a book for many years:
• Treat all Mac and Mc as if they are Mac
• ignore the apostrophe in names beginning O'D
• Count the first word in names starting von, le, de etc
• Numbers in titles you have a choice. You can either treat them as if spelt out, or put them at the beginning as in the phone book. I think this is actually easier.
• File letter by letter
