| Thursday, May 1, 8 p.m. | The Dirtbombs and guests | |
| Bombastic Detroit rock outfit The Dirtbombs have had countless lineup changes since forming in 1992, but there have been two constants throughout their career: a dedication to hard-hitting, R&B- and soul-infused garage rock, and frontman Mick Collins (formerly of The Gories). The Dirtbombs play loud and loose---they're anchored by the thudding assault of two drummers and two bassists---but they remain surprisingly cohesive and focused for a group that's endured so many personnel changes. | Sunday, May 11, 8 p.m. | Flight of the Conchords | |
| Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement---better known as "New Zealand's fourth most popular folk parody band," Flight Of The Conchords---have been performing together since 1998, but until about three years ago, when their stellar HBO One Night Stand performance aired, they were virtually unknown in America. But with Flight Of The Conchords, their sly, funny half-hour sitcom that premiered last year on HBO, they became full-blown cult stars in the States. In it, McKenzie and Clement play Kiwi bandmates Bret and Jemaine, perpetuating the roles they played in the BBC radio series Flight Of The Conchords, and onstage in infrequent but hilarious live performances. Now that the group has a new selt-titled record---featuring songs fans have already memorized from the TV series---Bret and Jermaine are performing more frequently these days, and unlike the versions of themselves they play on the show, they are having great success. (The Riverside show sold out in a matter of hours.) Onstage, McKenzie and Clement are low-key: Sitting on two stools, guitars in hand, they trade deadpan banter between pitch-perfect send-ups of everything from Marvin Gaye to David Bowie to hip-hop. | Monday, May 12, 8 p.m. | M.I.A. with special guests | |
| The fierce and arty rapper known as M.I.A. came on strong with her 2005 album Arular, but even the most fiendish praise of that one couldn't account for the riches to be heard on her 2007 follow-up. Like precious few other albums that year (or any other year in a long, long time), Kala sounds like nothing else. The only way to size up its sound is to invoke a whole laundry list of others---baile funk, grime, hip-hop, Basement Jaxx, New Order, etc.---that fall into its gloriously wobbly orbit. A.V. Club Picks |
| This week in A.V. Milwaukee | ||
| There ought to be some things all rock 'n' roll fans---no matter what subgenre or trend you're currently aligned with---can agree on: Mixing Black Sabbath with The Beatles and glam-era Bowie is good. Big, dumb drums are
good. Bombast, if it's catchy and melodic, is good. If we can agree on these things, can we all finally agree that Stone Temple Pilots are awesome? STP's B-level status in '90s rock history has practically nothing to do with the music and almost everything to do with the misfortune of coming out during one of the most annoyingly cred-conscious periods in the history of mainstream rock. Back in the early '90s, natural born arena rock band Pearl Jam was praised for making its music less melodic and more boring, because this meant they cared more about the fans than being famous or something. STP, on the other hand, made no apologies for swinging the hammer of the gods for shirtless men and dirty girls at the Enormodome in your town, and were condemned as lame ass poseurs because of it. No matter, The A.V. Club is psyched for the band's July 4 Summerfest appearance, if only because we're dying to hear "Big Bang Baby" live for the first time. We're not going to apologize for our love of big, dumb rock 'n' roll every now and then. Which is why The A.V. Club also salutes the return of Big Dumb Dick, one of Milwaukee's most popular hard rock bands of the late '90s and early '00s, which is finally back with a new record after an extended hiatus. BDD celebrates the release of See You In Hell with a CD release show Saturday at The Rave/Eagles Club. Of course, you can't live on macho riffage alone. Sometimes you have to indulge your sensitive side. Country music song and dance man Robbie Fulks should be good for a cry and some laughs Friday at Shank Hall, while new-wave folkies Tegan And Sara will rock in a kinder, gentler way Wednesday at Turner Hall. | ||
| Various theaters and times, May 1-3 | Milwaukee Underground Film Festival | |
| Despite the best efforts of the city's arthouse theaters, adventurous local movie buffs might still be frustrated by the relative lack of experimental, innovative, and plain bizarre cinema on area screens. The annual Milwaukee Underground Film Festival seeks to rectify the situation with a selection of provocative and controversial films, videos, and new media. MUFF's mission statement reads, "these genre-bending creations provide a vessel for expanding the Milwaukee arts community by bringing together artists and art lovers from all walks of life." Sure, but it's also an opportunity to see some cool, weird-ass movies. Opening night (Thursday, May 1) will kick off at UWM Union Theatre with a free program at 7 p.m., featuring the enticingly creepy 11-minute film Light Is Waiting, a very special subversion of a very special episode of Full House. On Friday there will be programs at 7 and 9 p.m. at Times Cinema; look out for Mylar Balloon Ripoff, a weird little three-minute Super 8 "diary project" documenting a bunch of Mylar balloons bumping around a white room. Finally, there will be three programs (at 4, 6, and 8 p.m.) at the Walker's Point Center For The Arts, featuring Red Light District Graffiti, a film about an insular community of Japanese prostitutes, and Water Spell, tantalizingly described as "a journey from realism to a supersensory realm." Tickets are $4 per screening, or $16 for a festival pass, and are available at the door. $4-$16, all ages | ||
