16 Ways to Spend Your Stimulus Check
They’re probably in the mail right now, those $600 government checks that are supposed to help stimulate the U.S. economy. Of course, the only way that works is if you spend the money. If gas, groceries, and that huge credit card bill haven’t eaten it up, you might consider, as I know many of us here are, pouring that money into some gadget goodness. PCMag has compiled 16 sub-$600 ideas. PCMag also produced the perfect companion piece: a list of excellent digital cameras that are now available at some truly bargain-basement
prices. They tell you which cameras you’ll want, why you’ll want them, and where you can find the rock-bottom prices.
How to Fix PC Gaming Once and for All
ExtremeTech analyst Joel Durham almost sabotages a very good column concept by stating up-front that the topic is almost unnecessary. Fortunately, he goes on to outline the problems with PC gaming and how some who love it are also its worst enemies. I completely agree with Joel on his point about gamers who take sides (PC versus console). Good topic and good work, Joel. Read it and join him in the fight to “save” PC gaming.
The Big and Bad Cyborg Keyboard
I’m pretty sure that if the people who created Tron in 1982 (it’s a sci-fi movie for you non–tech nerds) made a PC keyboard it would look like the Saitek Cyborg Gaming Keyboard. All those back-lit keys and the odd, retro design—it’s pure, early eighties future chic. ExtremeTech’s analysts managed to get their fingers on it and deliver a mostly laudatory review. Check out the report and slideshow to get the complete picture.
How to Downgrade from Vista to XP
Your new PC shipped with Microsoft Windows Vista and you hate it. While I contend Vista is a decent if bloated OS, I do understand the hostility—some people simply miss XP. There is a way out. PCMag has figured out how to turn back the hands of time and downgrade from Vista all the way to Windows XP. Is this something you’re prepared to do?
12 Tech Tools to Clear Your Clutter
I just spent a good part of the weekend making the shift from winter clothes to spring, It’s a big job, and barely scratches the surface of what I need to do to organize my life. This story, however, has given me some ideas. I like the label makers and card scanners (you have no idea how many stacks of business cards I have on my desk). Now I just need to follow the article’s advice and start decluttering and organizing my life for spring. You should, too.
Microsoft Explains Live Mesh
Last week, at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco, Microsoft rolled out a highly ambitious initiative—one that could connect disparate digital devices to create a “mesh” of information. The company tried to explain the concept behind the initiative, but I still think it’s as clear as mud. In sharper focus is Microsoft’s new plan to sponsor a virtual robotics competition, built on the back of its newly updated robotics development platform. I got the details on that.
Gearlog Roundup
Gadget blog Gearlog has the scoop on CompUSA stores rising from the dead, Russians snapping up iPhones (though the device isn’t officially for sale there), and a surprising White House BlackBerry theft. If you want to keep up with these and other fast-breaking stories, you need to make this blog a daily destination.
This GPS Really Listens
I recently used a GPS without any voice recognition. This meant that when I needed to change something or delve further than the automated turn-by-turn directions, I had to pull off the road. Our GPS analyst Craig Ellison says that’ll never happen with the stellar Garmin nüvi 880. It has the best full speech-recognition capabilities in the business. Get all the details in the review.
CrankyGeeks Talk Web 2.0
The cranks kick around Steve Ballmer, Vista, Mac Clones, an iPhone video threat, and much more. Must see IPTV, if you ask me.
