Thursday, May 1 at 7:30pm   Win Tickets to See Peter Moren (of Peter Bjorn and John)

peter moren

Text this event

The Last Tycoon may be Peter Moren's first solo album, but it has been several years in the making. Throughout the hectic years of songwriting, recording and touring with Peter Bjorn and John in support of their infectious breakout album Writer?s Block, Peter never rested. What emerged from that period is an intimate 10-track collection of delicate and introspective songs from one of the most promising young storytellers of the decade.

Recorded and mixed over two years in tiny apartments and rehearsal studios in Sweden and the U.S., The Last Tycoon is built around the basic foundation of Peter and his guitar. The album has a distinctly homemade feel that feeds from the folk singer-songwriter tradition but still incorporates strings, synthesizers, vibraphones, percussion, a musical saw, and even a drum machine or two.

Friday, May 2, 7:30pm   Duran Duran

Duran Duran

Text this event

Duran Duran has as much of a legacy to draft behind as any musical act could hope for. The group?s litany of hits?so many, many of them good?still work to punch the nostalgia buttons of those who were babysitters in the ?80s as well as those who were babysat. Sure, Duran Duran?s last few comebacks haven?t been too creatively stimulating, but that won?t slow the group down: It plays here behind the recent Red Carpet Massacre, an album that features appearances by Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. Opening: Your Vegas.

Monday, May 5, 6:30pm   Let?s Talk About Sex: The Story Of Modern Sexuality

Text this event

In 2008, it?s difficult to go anywhere without hearing someone talk about sex, and on Monday the normally stuffy confines of the Commonwealth Club will find itself taken over by sex columnists and sex educators. Porn star Nina Hartley?who got her nursing degree from SF State?is one of the latter, and will surely help lubricate the proceedings as she drops her knowledge on the audience, while The Daily Californian writer Julia Ingle will presumably make sure that the story stays modern. Topics include sex and the city, 21st-century taboos, and modern love.
