Science Postcards
New Zealand Association of Science Educators site spurs science literacy.
http://www.educationworld.com/awards/2008/r0408-25.shtml

REVIEW: A+
Science Postcards offers teachers eight “Postcards” that focus on literacy. Each lesson uses a children’s book to provide the framework for a science activity and a means for engaging the students. All of the lessons are provided free of charge but a site registration is required. Each Postcard is accompanied by teaching notes including suggestions for other books that could be used and a student activity notes that guide the student through the science exploration. The topics covered include forces, light, density, volcanoes, seeds, sound, and space. The lessons are tied to New Zealand curriculum standards but are appropriate for primary students around the world.

Anyone interested in finding information about preparing for and attending college may want to begin their search at B.J. Pinchbeck’s College Companion. To keep up the energy for all that studying and activity there is even a section on food that includes easy recipes that can be cooked in the microwave or toaster oven and online sites for ordering out. To round out the site the social section includes taking care of yourself, living arrangements, interpersonal and organizational skills, college life, dating and relationships , health and safety, managing money, fraternities and sororities, and taxes.

Each week, Education World spotlights books of interest to educators. This week, read a brief summary of two more of our "top 50 books for educators."

A First-Year Teacher's Guidebook
This practical book can help not only first-year teachers, but also established professionals, with eminently useful ideas for classroom management, using technology, handling parent conferences, and many other topics. Especially handy for the early-career teacher are sections on teaching in rural and urban settings, education issues, and first day / first week / first month ideas.

Democracy and Education
John Dewey's 1916 book on the interrelationship between education and democracy is as important, as it approaches its centennial, as it was when it was first hailed as a master work. The modern reader of education books will find the sweep and clarity of Dewey's approach to be a refreshing break from the highly specialized and jargon-filled books being churned out today. With no hesitancy, Dewey declares his topics to include, "The Significance of Geography and History," "Educational Values," "Theories of Knowledge," and "Theories of Morals." An essential text for the complete education library!
