  This week in A.V. Madison

Text this event

In the Madison print edition of The Onion:

If you?re afraid your music-and-booze promotion isn?t tacky or obvious enough, why not pierce the night sky upon a fresh spring evening? Last week The A.V. Club found a spotlight launching its beams from the parking lot of the High Noon Saloon during a Jack Daniels ?Studio No. 7? show with The Bravery. Imagine the marketing meeting behind this: ?Research shows that music fans, much like fish or deer, cannot resist the hypnotic pull of shiny things. Also, just letting the whole town know that ?we?re here!? will help the folks inside enjoy the contrived air of exclusivity as they sip our fine sour-mash product and sweat it out to some dance-rock.? In a town where show attendance depends so much on word of mouth (and free weekly newspapers, of course), is this insulting or just hilarious?

Either way, it?s understandable if you find yourself retreating into the sweetly sullen tunes of Owen (Saturday, Club 770), the oblivion of Dead Meadow (Monday, High Noon Saloon), and/or the fractured violence of We Versus The Shark (Wednesday, Nottingham Co-op).

Got an event? Submit it to madcalendar@theonion.com no later than the Wednesday of the week before publication, and preferably two weeks or more in advance. Got a CD or anything else you'd like us to check out? Mail it to 551 W. Main St., #100, Madison, WI 53703

Friday, May 2, 4pm   Eco Party 2008

We Conserve

Text this event

Indie-rockers meet stoner faves on this local-regional bill, an MTV-sponsored pat on the back for UW's efforts at environmental friendliness. The Chicago Afrobeat Project headlines after a few hours of mixed-up funk (Madison's Steez, Milwaukee's Codebreaker), reggae (Natty Nation), and rap (The Crest). The show's earlier time slots feature the warped folk stylings of Minneapolis' A Paper Cup Band and the gritty-pretty throwback pop of Madison band The Midwest Beat.

Friday, May 9, 9:30pm   Big Gig Music Series: The Avett Brothers

Avett Brothers

Blue Moon

High Noon

Text this event

While their history might sound clich?d--band of alt-rock twentysomethings breaks up, turns to back-porch country and bluegrass--North Carolina's The Avett Brothers play with such unironic conviction that the choice appears completely logical. Ragged harmonies, foot stomping, and instrument banging fill out the drummerless trio's sound, which is anchored by banjo, guitar, and upright bass. Last year's Emotionalism infuses brimming melodies with a brash attitude that pushes through any of the album's weaker spots. Opening: Jessica Lea Mayfield

Text this event

The Mad Rollin' Dolls' unpredictable fourth season ends with a repeat of the 2007 finals match-ups. The undefeated Quad Squad faces the number two Reservoir Dolls for the title of league champs, and third-ranked Vaudeville Vixens take on number four Unholy Rollers in the grudge match.

Wednesday, May 14, 6-8pm   May Meeting Of The Onion League Of Literature And Libations: A Discussion Of Geek Love By Katherine Dunn

Literature and
Libations

Brocach

Geek Love

Text this event

Because only alcohol can save adult literacy, The Onion invites you to the April meeting of its monthly book club, the League of Literature and Libations. We'll convene upstairs at Brocach Irish Pub, and after a brief social hour, our moderator will lead a book discussion. Brocach will provide complimentary appetizers and drink specials for book club attendees.

If you?re looking for a tale of tender-hearted introversion, look elsewhere. Geek Love gives it readers an image of the Binewski family circus--a freak show created by Al and Lil Binewski after they decide to systematically expose Lil to chemicals while she is pregnant. Katherine Dunn's popular and controversial 1983 novel is relayed in the first-person narration of their daughter, Olympia "Ollie" Binewski, a bald albino dwarf with a hunchback. Dunn's funhouse of images does not allow her readers to unthinkingly maintain their perceptions of "normalcy." Holding a mirror up to the ways in which physicality compels our fascination, Geek Love proves to be both a heart-stirring and lurid read.

The meeting will be open to all, but to RSVP and receive a few questions to guide your reading, send an email to litandlibations@theonion.com.

For June's meeting, we'll be reading A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess.

Saturday, May 3, 7pm   Win Tickets To Kathleen Edwards + The Last Town Chorus At Majestic Theatre

Kathleen Edwards

Majestic

Text this event

Kathleen Edwards is an abundantly talented singer-songwriter who gives new gloss to the country lexicon of heartbreak, tragedy, and despair. She shares a lot with Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, but her 2003 debut, Failer, marked her as a singular presence. The album practically dripped whiskey, and the aftertaste left a similar kind of soothing burn. Edwards' new Asking For Flowers builds on her 2005 album, Back To Me, offering a moving, witty, and confident set of songs about heartbreak and love. The Last Town Chorus is Megan Hickey, a lap-steel virtuoso with a haunting, gauzy voice that seems custom-created for the sparse music she plays.

Sunday, May 4, 8pm   Win Tickets To Ra Ra Riot + The Little Ones At The Annex

Ra Ra Riot

Annex

Text this event

Buffeted by happy toms, warm bass, sparkly guitars, and the unpolluted tenor of wide-eyed frontman Ed Reyes, L.A.?s The Little Ones are a refreshing break from the garage-blues-electro-dance-post-punk crowd. The seven lovely, paisley-pop gems that ended up on The Little Ones? self-released Sing Song EP last year incited a mini bidding war between labels anxious to sign the group (Astralwerks won), and the new Terry Tales & Fallen Gates EP lives up to its promise. Probably the last band that?d torch your car in a politics- or sports-induced frenzy, co-headliners Ra Ra Riot instead pour their restless energy into grooming coy pop songs with cello, violin, and lyrics that self-consciously quirky listeners should enjoy chirping along to. Opening: Hey Champ.

Monday, May 5, 9pm   Win Tickets To High Noon Saloon's Fourth Anniversary Party With Dead Meadow

Dead Meadow

High Noon

Text this event

A slow-minded sludge band big into the likes of Blue Cheer and The Groundhogs, Dead Meadow cooks up a stew of murky psychedelia and bluesy metal. After a couple of unremarkable full-lengths released by Fugazi's Joe Lally's Tolotta imprint, the band found its voice with 2003's Shivering King And Others, its Matador debut. The follow-up, Feathers, tends to drift too far into the mellower end of aimlessness, but the new full-length, Old Growth, is a welcome return to languid gravity and creeping atmosphere. Also playing: Droids Attack, Dark Fog.

Tuesday, May 6, 7:30pm   Win Tickets To Tegan And Sara At Barrymore Theatre

Tegan and
Sara

Barrymore

Text this event

Tegan and Sara Quin were originally pegged as a folk act, but nowadays the lesbian twin sisters from Canada are pursuing a vaguely '80s-ish pop path that led to last year's terrific album The Con. Co-produced by Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla and featuring appearances by people like Kaki King, Death Cab's Jason McGerr, and The Rentals' Matt Sharp, the 14-song album offers all sorts of moods complemented by the sisters' intoxicating vocals, which border on otherworldly. Little epic moments are easy to find on The Con--the title track and "Nineteen" are especially impressive--which should help make the unlikely success of 2004's So Jealous (propelled by "Walking With The Ghost") not feel like a fluke. Opening: An Horse.

Thursday, May 8, 8pm   Win Tickets To Jim White At Orpheum Stage Door

Text this event

Jim White emerged from a jumbled past (former jobs include fashion model and surfer) in 1997 to release Wrong-Eyed Jesus!, launching splinters of folk and country into an atmosphere of mystery that embraced both the spirituality and the seediness of his youth in Florida. With arrangements full of echoes and creaks, and a voice that can take on a gentle lilt or a bone-deep growl, he sends folks scrambling for reference points that range from alt-country to Beck to Tom Waits. None do justice to his storytelling or philosophical wanderings, which he invests with a newfound sense of relief and wonder on the new Transnormal Skiperoo. Opener Vid Libert is a Madison songwriter who also twists something like Americana into a fertile beyond, expanding his acoustic folk songs with lo-fi yet expansive touches of dub and blues.
