MARCUS MILLER: ALL THAT JAZZ PT. 2: Grammy winning artist reflects on=20
new disc and old friends
-- by Kenya M Yarbrough

In the midst of promoting the Playboy Jazz cruise, which leaves=20
the docks on January 25 of next year, bassist Marcus Miller is also=20
promoting his latest CD, "Marcus."=20=20

The disc hit the streets March 4, and features a plethora of
contemporary jazz sounds with the help of Lalah Hathaway, Corinne Bailey=
=20
Rae, Keb' Mo', 'Def Poetry' star Shihan the Poet, and actress Taraji=20
Henson ("Hustle & Flow").

Taraji Henson?

Yes, Taraji Henson.

"We were looking for something different and somebody told me they=
=20
heard her sing a whole song and not just 'It's hard out here for a pimp'=
=20
- which is what I knew her for. So we had a meeting with her manager and=
=20
asked her if she would be interested in trying something different and=20
she was completely down."

Henson does a spoken word version of Robin Thicke's "Lost Without=20
You" and sings a bit on it, too.

"She's really good. People really need to check for her. She's=20
really talented. We know she's a good (actress), but she can sing, too."

"Marcus" features Bailey Rae on Denise Williams' "Free" and both=20
Lalah Hathaway and Henson on the Thicke song (separate tracks). The disc=
=20
is clearly filled with ladies of soul.

"They're all soulful, but with Lalah that's the first thing that=20
hits you when you hear her sing - soul and warmth," he said. "I've been=20
working with her on and off for the last 15 years. She's really starting=
=20
to pick up momentum; people are really starting to get into her. She's=20
an amazing musician."

When Hathaway first worked with Miller, she was fresh out of=20
Berklee School of Music. Miller said that he'd never heard anybody sing=20
as in tune and with that much soulfulness.

"You can hear her father's [Donny Hathaway] voice in her, singing=20
too. It's just a magical combination."

Miller searched out Rae after hearing her hit 'Girl Put Your=20
Records On' on the radio. He had his people contact her people to find=20
out if she was interested, and she was. He just said that she had one of=
=20
those distinct voices that he's always listening for.

"My biggest thing is distinct voices, whether you play an=20
instrument or you're a singer. That's the thing that I love the most.=20
When you can sing a note and somebody says, 'Oh, who is that? That's=20
different.' That really excites me. There are a lot of great singers,=20
but a lot of them have similar sounds."

Miller explained that he'd been lucky enough to work with Chaka=20
Khan, Natalie Cole, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie.

"All these people, they play three notes - and you know [it's=20
them]."

In particular, Miller was one of the creative minds behind the
legendary distinctive sound of Luther Vandross on his hits like "The=20
Power of Love," "Never Too Much," and "Till My Baby Comes Home"

"The way he used his voice was so distinctive. He didn't compete=20
with anybody; he didn't try to outsing anybody. He just sang from his=20
heart. The most important thing for him was to make you feel something."

"And what he chose to sing was also a part of his gift too."

He walked into the studio saying he wanted to do a song by The
Carpenter's called "Superstar." Miller was skeptical.

"Once I heard him sing it, I said, 'Oh, ok. I get it.' He could=20
hear magic in songs that weren't even in his realm. He flip it around=20
and make it a hit," he said.

For more on Marcus Miller and his new CD, "Marcus," which also
features also features a funked up version of Stevie Wonder's "Higher
Ground," Miles Davis' "Jean Pierre," and Tower of Power's "What is Hip?"=

SHARPTON, MARCHERS PROTEST BELL ACQUITTALS IN NY: Rev. Al promised to=20
'close this city down' after cops go free.

*Al Sharpton fired up a group of protesters in Harlem Saturday with=20
promises to "close this city down" following the acquittals of three=20
police detectives who shot and killed an unarmed groom on his wedding=20
day.

"We strategically know how to stop the city so people stand still and=20
realize that you do not have the right to shoot down unarmed, innocent=20
civilians," Sharpton told an overflow crowd of several hundred people at=
=20
his National Action Network office. "This city is going to deal with the=
=20
blood of Sean Bell."

According to the AP, Sharpton's rally at his office was followed=20
by a 20-block march down Malcolm X Boulevard and then across 125th=20
Street, where some bystanders yelled out "Kill the police!" Fifty of the=
=20
marchers carried white placards bearing big black numbers for each of=20
the 50 bullets police fired at Bell and his friends.

Also taking part in the rally was a friend of Bell who was=20
wounded in the 2006 shooting outside a Queens strip club.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"They never accused Sean Bell of doing anything. Then why is he=20
dead?" Sharpton asked, his voice roaring with anger. Authorities "have=20
shown now that they will not hold police accountable. Well, guess what?=20
If you won't, we will!"
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"Shut it down! Shut it down!" the crowd chanted, standing up and=20
applauding wildly.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Sitting behind Sharpton as he spoke were Bell's parents, his=20
sister and Nicole Paultre Bell, who took her fiance's name after his=20
death.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"The justice system let me down," Paultre Bell told the crowd in=20
a soft voice. "April 25, 2008: They killed Sean all over again. That's=20
what it felt like to us."

FOXY BROWN AVOIDS JAILTIME IN FLORIDA: Rapper given probation in assault=
=20
case regarding weave glue.=20

*Fresh from Rikers Island prison, Foxy Brown appeared in a Florida=20
court room Friday and got herself a plea deal in yet another assault=20
case.=20

The rapper pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges stemming=20
from a February 2007 incident at Queen Beauty Supply store, where Foxy=20
was accused of throwing hair glue at the store's owner.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
In exchange for her no contest plea, the Brooklyn Don Diva was
sentenced to six months probation, 15 hours of community service and=20
ordered to pay court fees and fines. She must also take an anger=20
management class and write a letter of apology to the employee she=20
assaulted. Meanwhile, Brown is still facing a civil suit from the=20
store=92s manager.

Born Inga Marchand, Foxy was released from New York=92s Rikers=20
Island prison on April 18 after serving eight months for a parole=20
violation.=20

PRINCE PUTS HIS STAMP ON COACHELLA: Performance Saturday night with=20
Morris Day and Sheila E. described as one for the ages.

*Wearing white pants and a loose white shirt with glittery fringe,=20
Prince took the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival=20
just after 11 p.m. Saturday and gave fans something to remember for=20
years to come.

"You are the coolest place on earth right now!" Prince declared to the=20
thousands attending the three-day festival in Indio, Calif. Organizers=20
had been trying to book the performer since its inaugural outing nine=20
years ago. It didn't take long for the singer to prove that patience=20
pays off.=20

Prince and his band =97 complete with a horn section and background=20
singers =97 set things off with The Time's "Jungle Love." Morris Day came=
=20
out to sing his song, while Prince strolled around the stage with his=20
guitar, according to the Associated Press.

He also welcomed the singer and drummer Sheila E, who took the=20
lead for a song and then joined Prince in an extended jam. The set list=20
also included a performance of "1999" and "Little Red Corvette."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Perhaps the evening's biggest surprise was Prince's cover of
Radiohead's "Creep." With some lyrics adjusted, a ripping guitar solo=20
and extended falsetto crooning for a finale, Prince's version "had the=20
crowd slack-jawed," wrote the AP in its review of the performance.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
To close the set, Prince put his own spin on the Beatles' "Come=20
Together," urging the audience =97 whom he called his "choir" =97 to sing=
=20
"Come together, yeah" over and over.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
In classic Prince tradition, he said goodnight and bounced=20
without playing his signature hit "Purple Rain," leaving fans perplexed=20
and on the verge of disappointment. But moments later, he returned and=20
gave the crowd what they wanted.

"They're telling me that we got to go, but I can't leave!" Prince=
=20
shouted after rocking "Purple Rain." He then flew through a "torrid"=20
version of "Let's Go Crazy," the AP wrote.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Prince had widely been considered the one act most all=20
concertgoers =97 a diverse 60,000 of indie rockers, electronica dancers=20
and pop fans =97 were certain to see. When it was all said and done, he=20
left the stage with these words: "From now on, this is Prince's house."=20

GARY COLEMAN AND NEW BRIDE HIT 'DIVORCE COURT': Couple exposes dirty=20
laundry on episodes to air May 1 and 2.

*They got married eight months ago and already Gary Coleman and his new=
=20
bride, Shannon Price, are in TV's "Divorce Court."=20

In episodes to air May 1 and 2, Judge Lynn Toler will try to sort=
=20
through the couple's myriad of problems since tying the knot last=20
August. Coleman, 40 will discuss his anger and intimacy issues. Price,=20
22, tells Toler that they fight on a monthly basis and arguments can get=
=20
real "ugly."

"If he doesn't get his way, he throws a temper tantrum like a
five-year-old does," Price says, according to a transcript of the show=20
provided to The Associated Press. "He like stomps the floor and yells,=20
'Meehhhh,' and starts throwing stuff around. He bashes his head in the=20
wall, too."

Coleman, who met Price on the set of the 2006 comedy "Church=20
Ball," says he can't ever win because "the male is always the bad guy."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"When I try to state my case or explain things to her or try to=20
get her to understand my point of view," Coleman says, "my point of view=
=20
doesn't matter."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Price also complains that Coleman has no friends and inexplicably=
=20
disappears from home in the middle of the night.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"I don't have any friends and don't have any intention of making=20
any," he says to Toler. "People will stab you in the back, mistreat you,=
=20
talk about me behind your back, steal from you. And they're not really=20
your friends. (They're) only there because you're a celebrity or because=
=20
they want to get something from you."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Later, Coleman refers to his private life with Price as=20
"mediocre."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"It's not her fault," he says. "I always feel like I have the=20
weight of the world on my shoulders every day I get up. ... There are=20
days I don't even want to get up."

TOM CRUISE JUMPS BACK ON OPRAH'S COUCH: Actor returns for the first time=
=20
since May 2005's sofa-jumping embarrassment.=20

*Tom Cruise will return to "The Oprah Winfrey Show" next month for
the first time since he famously jumped on the host's couch in May 2005=20
to profess his love for new girlfriend Katie Holmes.

The actor will promote the 25th anniversary of his classic film "Risky=20
Business" during a two-part episode scheduled to air May 2 and May 5,=20
during which colleagues will surprise him with taped messages honoring=20
his work in movies.=20

Part one will feature an interview with Cruise from his home in=20
Telluride, Colo. He'll talk about his "family, his life and the future,"=
=20
according to a statement Thursday from Harpo Productions.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
In the second episode, Cruise will appear in Winfrey's Chicago
studio. No word if Oprah will haul out the same couch that withstood all=
=20
of Cruise's shenanigans three years ago.

: Actor apologizes in court; hands over $15 million in checks before=20
Thursday's sentencing.

*Hours before he was to be sentenced Thursday for failing to file=20
income taxes, Wesley Snipes cut the federal government three checks for=20
$5 million and delivered them in court, according to reports.

The actor and the IRS still must determine how much he owes - plus=20
interest and penalties =96 after he was found guilty on three counts of=20
willfully failing to file tax returns. He was sentenced Thursday to=20
three years in prison.

Snipes' $15 million payment took prosecutors by surprise. They=20
initially declined to accept the cash, then had changed their mind by=20
day's end.=20=20

Reading from a prepared apology, Snipes told the court that he=20
made "costly mistakes" and was the victim of crooked advisers, a=20
liability of wealth and celebrity that attracts "wolves and jackals like=
=20
flies are attracted to meat."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"I am an idealistic, naive, passionate, truth-seeking,=20
spiritually motivated artist, unschooled in the science of law and=20
finance," Snipes said.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
He remains free for the time being and will be notified when it's=
=20
time to surrender to authorities. Defense attorney Carmen Hernandez=20
signaled in court that Snipes would pursue an appeal.

WOMAN STABBED FOR TALKING OVER TYRA: Victim nearly killed for yakking=20
away while folks were trying to watch "Top Model."

*A 42-year-old Seattle woman was nearly stabbed to death Wednesday=20
because she wouldn't stop talking during "America's Next Top Model."=20

According to SeattlePI.com, the victim and her friends were in a=20
Columbia City apartment drinking beer and watching the Tyra Banks=20
reality show when another woman in the group told her to stop talking.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
When she refused, police say the woman then opened the apartment=20
door and ordered the talker to leave. Police said things got heated and=20
became physical, with one woman having a clump of her hair snatched out.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The attacker then pulled a paring knife from a nearby apple and=20
began stabbing the 42-year-old, according to a police report. Witnesses=20
pulled the knife away and the perpetrator ran off.

Medics and police were called about 9:30 p.m. to the apartment in=
=20
the 5000 block of 37th Avenue South. A police officer found the victim=20
lying on a neighbor's couch with a blood-soaked towel covering a chest=20
wound roughly 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch wide, the report said. The woman had=
=20
gone upstairs and knocked on the neighbor's door for help, saying she=20
had been stabbed and her money was taken.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Medics who rushed her to Harborview Medical Center had to call=20
for donor blood because her stab wounds were so severe, said police=20
spokesman Jeff Kappel.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Police found the clump of hair in a garbage can, but did not find=
=20
a weapon. As of press time, the suspect was still at large.

DNA TEST ORDERED FOR TOMI RAE'S SON: Judge says it should be completed=20
within the next 30 days.

*The judge handling James Brown's messy estate has ordered a DNA test=20
for James Brown II. His mother, Tomi Rae Hynie, claims the late=20
Godfather of Soul is the boy's biological father.

Trustees handling the singer's estate are questioning Brown's=20
paternity. Judge Jack Early said Friday that the testing should be=20
cpompleted within the next 30 days, according to the New York Daily=20
News.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"Clearly, James Brown has held up this child to be his son," said=
=20
Peter Shahid, a court-appointed attorney for James Brown II, adding that=
=20
the child has received Social Security and insurance benefits since the=20
entertainer's death. "We have writings that he has signed indicating=20
that this is his son. He talks lovingly of his child. So all indications=
=20
are this is the son of James Brown."
=20=20
Hynie's attorney Robert Rosen said his client has never objected=20
to a paternity test. But she would only take one if his other children=20
did so as well. "She didn't feel like her son should be singled out."=20
Rosen said.

WHITE JENA TEEN PLEADS GUILTY TO HATE CRIME: Jeremiah Munsen, 18, drove=20
past marchers with nooses hanging from his pickup.

*A white teen in Jena, Louisiana pleaded guilty Friday to a=20
federal hate crime of threatening and intimidating civil rights marchers=
=20
last year by displaying hangman=92s nooses from the back of a pickup=20
truck.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Federal authorities announced Friday that Jeremiah Munsen, 18, of=
=20
Grant Parish admitted that he placed two large nooses on his truck Sept.=
=20
20 and drove back and forth past a group of marchers gathered at a bus=20
depot in Alexandria =97 about 35 miles south of Jena, where the marches=20
took place =97 as they awaited buses to return them to Tennessee.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"The defendant used a noose to threaten peaceful civil rights
marchers who were in Louisiana to rally against racial intolerance,"=20
said Acting Assistant Attorney General Grace Chung Becker. Munsen, who=20
faces up to a year in prison, will be sentenced at an August 15 hearing.

Marchers were in Jena to protest local authorities who were=20
accused of racial prejudice in the handling of several cases, including=20
the hanging of nooses in a tree after a group of black high school=20
students sat in an area where traditionally only white students sat.=20

Months later, a white student was allegedly beaten by six black=20
classmates in 2006. The protests that followed were in criticism of=20
local authorities who initially charged the six students dubbed the=20
"Jena 6," with second-degree attempted murder and conspiracy. The=20
charges were later reduced against those involved in the incident.
