the real thing.”

TONIGHT ON THE CBS
EVENING NEWS
Here's an early look at what the Evening
News is working on from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric
Hi everyone,
Your economic stimulus check could be in the mail - if you qualify, of
course. But will the rebates work the way the government intended? Several
factors point to no - including the high cost of gas and Americans' soaring
debt. Anthony Mason opens our
broadcast tonight with a rebate Reality Check.
Next: Race and Politics. Barack Obama's controversial former pastor, Rev.
Jeremiah Wright, made an appearance before the National Press Club last
night. He said criticism of his sermons attacks the black church - which has
a tradition that's misunderstood. Dean
Reynolds examines whether Wright's comments could leave a scar on
Senator Obama's campaign.
A story you'll only find on The CBS Evening News: Richard Butler, the journalist
held in captivity in Iraq
for two months while working for 60 Minutes, tells about his ordeal for the
first time. It's a story of bravery in the face of terror that you won't want
to miss.
Also tonight, we show you a side of the country that's not often seen: a
close-up look at living in extreme poverty. For the first installment of our
new series, "The
Other America,"
Seth Doane meets a family who
went from living the American dream … to losing their business …
to collecting cans on the street.
I hope you'll join us for these stories and more, Katie
