Wine House Cocktail Party, November 2006

Dear Criss,

We hope everyone enjoyed their Anzac Day Long Weekend. We are hitting the ground running this week with the Brasserie's fantastic new lunch menu continuing and The Old & Rare wine store is sharing some more notes on wines shown at the recent Function Space Tasting. We also have the Wine Education course with Ben Knight this weekend, a fantastic (and FREE) Taylors Tasting coming up and our Wine Trivia.

We hope you enjoy,

From the Team at Wine House

This week at Wine House -  Wine of the Week.

Craggy Range Gimblett Merlot 2006!
Best red on show @ Function Space Tasting!

As we mentioned last week, there was a wide range of white and reds to try at our function tasting. The red wine list shone with the Brokenwood Wade Block Shiraz, Hunter Shiraz, Pipers Brook Estate Pinot Noir, Pondalowie Special Release Cabernet/Malbec & Shiraz, Grant Burge Meshach 2003, Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon, Kay Bros Hillside Shiraz 2003 and Port Phillip Rimage Shiraz all being of particular brilliance. However, Wine House and guests were completely blown away by the Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels Merlot 2006.

This Merlot is absolutely stunning. Regarded as one of the best vintages of Merlot that Craggy Range have produced, this 2006 is full bodied, silken and incredibly warm. The palate is full of ripe black fruit, plums, chocolate and even a hint of tobacco, possibly from the Cab Franc component.. Fine grained tannins leave a lush mouth feel that continues long into the back of the palate. At $42.95 per bottle, or $38.66 in a mixed/straight dozen, there is real value for money here. Enjoy now or over the next decade.

$38.66 in a dozen | $42.95 per bottle

Old & Rare Wines - Function Space Tasting Wines

This week is a continuation on from last weeks reviews of some of the wines we had on show at our Function Space Tasting. Here are a few more wines The Wine House and our customers chose as among some of the best on tasting.

Brokenwood Indigo Pinot Noir 2006, Beechworth, VIC.
Robust Pinot from the Indigo!

A little more serious and intense than the previous 2005, this Pinot has some grunt! The nose shows lovely lifted notes of dark cherry and chocolate with an underlying earth character. In check with it's fruit/alcohol, this wine has a delicious lingering finish! A steal!

$24.26 in a dozen | $26.95 per bottle

Grant Burge Filsell Shiraz 2005, Barossa Valley, SA.

The Wine Advocate 91 Points!

Grant Burge has access to some of the oldest shiraz vines in the Barossa and it is from these vines that he sources fruit for his Filsell & Meshach. This latest Filsell is rich and opulent, rippling with layers of plum and red berries, integrated oak and silky tannins.
$30.56 in a dozen | $33.95 per bottle

Plantagenet Riesling Mount Barker 1997, Mount Barker, WA.

Jeremy Oliver 93 points!

Perfumed and musky, this delightfully restrained wine reveals lemon/lime aromas & a supple, almost juicy mouth feel of apple/pear fruit beautifully integrated with clean acidity. Finishes long & fresh. A brilliant example of an aged, yet lively, Riesling from the West.
$26.06 in a dozen | $28.95 per bottle

Alkoomi Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, Frankland River, WA.

Affordable WA Cabernet!

Nationally renowned for their Blackbutt and the Jarrah Shiraz, this is classic medium-bodied Bordeaux style wine, combining elegant berry and minty fruit with fine tannins and soft acidity. Drinks well when young but with long cellaring potential. A bargain for sub $20!

$17.96 in a dozen | $19.95 per bottle

Craggy Range Block 14 Syrah 2006, Hawkes Bay, NZ.

A stunning Merlot and an amazing Syrah!

Deficit irrigation practices reduced berry size and created a supple, Rhône-like wine with pronounced pepper and berry flavours. Sweet fruit and seductively soft and gentle tannins make this very accessible, but with impressive underlying power. A Wine House favourite!!
$44.96 in a dozen | $49.95 per bottle

Port Phillip Estate Pinot Noir 2006, Mornington Peninsula, VIC.

Gutsy and robust Mornington Pinot!

Port Phillip is one of the best Mornington Peninsula pinot noirs on the market. A beautifully perfumed nose opens up to dark plum fruit with hints of nougat and spice. Velvety texture, mouthwatering flavour and a long, dry finish, this is one that will last for 10-12yrs.
$31.46 in a dozen | $34.95 per bottle

Events - Taylor Estate Tasting.
Saturday 10th May
@ the Wine House - Old & Rare Store, 2-5pm,
Free.

Put this complimentary tasting in your diary. A wide range of Taylor's Estate wines will be on tasting at Wine House on Saturday the 10th of May. Included in the tasting will be new vintages of the St.Andrew's range of wines, including their Riesling, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

It is a great chance to try some terrific Clare Valley wines before deciding which of the range suits you and your cellar best. Of course we have already selected the range for our cellar should you wish to buy them in a couple more years.

Wine Trivia

Last week we asked...

What was Penfolds sparkling shiraz called?

Thank you Joe, who correctly pointed out that Penfolds made two sparking wines which used Shiraz, you won the quiz. There was the old Sparkling Burgundy, which was bottle fermented, and there was a Sparkling Mardi Gras, which was made with a dominate percentage of Riesling. Well done the $30 voucher is yours.

This week we ask you to unscramble these word...

Acrnf, slstneeneeueeobcrkr, Pipsandgl.

For your chance to win a $30 Lunch Special at the Brasserie, or a $30 voucher at Old & Rare Wines, email your correct answer to sales@winehouse.com.au.  Extra consideration is given to detailed answers where many correct replies are received in a short time period.
