WE'RE WONDERING
"The next time a photographer shoots a f------ picture on my
backswing, I'm going to break his f------ neck." - Tiger Woods
We hesitated to begin this issue with that risque Woods quote, but do
so because it goes straight to the heart of this week's question:
Why is the absolute quiet expectation so ingrained in golf when such
is not the case in other sports? (SHHHHHHH!) Is it, in fact necessary,
or could/should players get used to swinging in less than these ideal
conditions? Any thoughts?

SHHHHHHH!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
When a baseball player is about to face what might be a 95 mph
fastball, and 50,000 fans are booing or cheering in anticipation of
the event, no one holds up a sign that reads "Quiet." Likewise, when
an NBA player is about to attempt a foul shot, and on the other side
of the clear plexiglass backboard fans are waving everything but the
proverbial kitchen sink in his face, he doesn't back away from the
line until order is restored. Golfers, on the other hand, appear to
require total silence lest their concentration be broken during the
process of putting or swinging away. The tradition of silence and
the absence of distraction is so dear to the pros that its
infringement in the form of a camera click has put John Daly on the
operating table and Tiger Woods in so foul a mood as to threaten
mayhem on the next transgressor. Hence, fans must put up with the
indignity of cell phone confiscation upon entering tournament grounds
and long lines to retrieve phones at the end of the day. After all,
these players are playing for a lot of money.

WEAR LATEX GLOVES
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
We were doing some file housecleaning the other day and came across
this note from South African reader Andre Engelbrecht that somehow
got lost in the mix. Alas, we're a tad late passing his suggestion
along (Nov. 2003), but if you're still on board, Andre, thanks a
bunch for this tip.
"Hi. My name is Andre, and I'm from sunny South Africa. We get
plenty of rain during our golfing days. I have found that a pair of
latex doctors gloves helps to get rid of the slip on your club when
they are damp. Try it! It may just work for you. Good golfing."

OLYMPIC GOLF IS A STRONG POSSIBILITY
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Once again there's talk about golf's becoming part of the Olympic
Games, only this time the possibility has some legs. PGA
commissioner Tim Finchem has expressed his support, and David Fay,
executive director of the U.S. Golf Association, has indicated there
is interest on the part of the International Olympic Committee. Golf
has not been a part of the games since 1900 in Paris and 1904 in St.
Louis. To reinstate golf in time in time for the 2016 event, should
approval be given, will require much planning, as regards scheduling
if pro golfers are to participate. Cities already pre-approved as
possible venues include Chicago, Madrid; Prague, Tokyo; Rio de
Janeiro, Doha, Qatar; and Baku, Azerbaijan.

The IGotcha Ready pre-round warm up system is a weight designed to
"twist and lock" onto your golf club shaft in three different places:
center, grip, and clubhead. Ten swings with the weight at each
location is said to help establish tempo (center), a powerful release
(grip), and an effective muscle stretch (clubhead). The eight-ounce
device is easily carried in a golf bag, and the thirty-swing routine
takes only about a minute. It's available at popular golf retail
outlets. MSRP: 29.95

NOTEWORTHY: COBRA SPEED LD DRIVER AND METALS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
If the sound of your golf ball being struck by a metal driver is
important to you, consider buying the new 2008 King Cobra Speed LD
Drivers And Fairways. Frequency Tuning has been incorporated into
their head design "to promote a clear, crisp sound that is pleasing
to all golfers," according to a Cobra Golf press release. If the
sound of metal on surlyn is of little concern to you, buy the Speed
LDs because a new head design places the CG lower and deeper and
increases the MOI to over 5,000 by maximizing clubhead length and
width dimensions. The clubs have large faces with a milled dual
rhombus face insert for maximum forgiveness and ball speed across the
face. Driver and fairway metal ball speed is enhanced by Cobra's
exclusive Speed Tuning technology, which optimizes ball speeds for
all player types. MSRP: $375 (driver); $225 (fairway)

HE SAID
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
"The yips are that ghastly time when, with the first movement of the
putter, the golfer blacks out, loses sight of the ball and hasn't the
remotest idea of what to do with the putter or, occasionally, that he
is holding a putter at all." - Tommy Armour
