Toward the Killer App for Imagery?Toward the Killer App for Imagery?

Turning imagery into actionable information for use in GIS applications has been a bit of a holy grail in our industry. Even today most imagery is a "back drop," albeit an important one, for vector data. The advent of reliable feature extraction pushed imagery use forward, but even that tool remained in specialist hands. Still, the dream of retailers using widely available satellite and aerial imagery to determine amounts of fertilizer for backyards at big box stores floated around some five years ago. We've yet to see that specific application, but a related one has popped up. Sungevity uses Virtual Earth imagery (Pictometry's obliques) to determine the potential savings a home owner might yield from installing solar panels. The estimates are tied directly to the nature of the roof and the sun at the location. The application cuts estimates since there's no need for a site visit. And, as you might expect, Sungevity is in the solar panel sales and installation business, not the geospatial business.
