The President's Schedule

Monday, April 21, 2008
President Bush made remarks in honor of the opening of the Mexican Consulate. Afterwards, he met with President Felipe Calderón of Mexico. Later, President Bush met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada.

In the evening, President Bush made remarks at a United States Chamber of Commerce reception. Afterwards, he participated in a dinner with President Calderón of Mexico and Prime Minister Harper of Canada.

"I chose to host this summit in New Orleans for a variety of reasons, one of which is, for centuries this city has been a place where commerce and culture from across the globe have come together -- one of the really great international cities in the United States. And once again, New Orleans now steps on the international scene, where it should be."

President Bush participated in a breakfast with President Felipe Calderon of Mexico and Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada. Afterwards, he met with the North American Competitiveness Council. Later, President Bush met with the President Calderon and Prime Minister Harper, and participated in a joint press availability.

In the afternoon, President Bush participated in a tree planting in honor of Earth Day. Afterwards, he participated in a lunch with community leaders. Later, the President attended a Kennedy Majority Committee reception.

"One of the things -- people ask, well, does it make sense for Mexico, Canada and the United States to meet? Absolutely, it makes sense. We're neighbors. A prosperous neighborhood is in our interests, a secure neighborhood is in our interests, and we share common values. So I'm not surprised we've had good meetings -- plus we like each other. It's easy to work with leaders who are straightforward and honest, tell you what's on their mind, and who care deeply about the people of their countries and who are problem solvers. That's how I have found this meeting and the previous meetings we've held."

President Bush participated in a breakfast with His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan to discuss bilateral U.S.-Jordanian relations, efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the situation in Lebanon, and other regional issues. Later, President Bush attended the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony at the U.S. Capitol in honor of Dr. Michael Ellis DeBakey and his distinguished career as a surgeon, innovator, and medical educator.

"Dr. DeBakey has an impressive resume, but his truest legacy is not inscribed on a medal or etched into stone. It is written on the human heart. His legacy is the unlost hours with family and friends who are still with us because of his healing touch. His legacy is grandparents who lived to see their grandchildren. His legacy is holding the fragile and sacred gift of human life in his hands -- and returning it unbroken."

In the afternoon, President Bush participated in a photo opportunity in the Oval Office with recipients of the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, which was established by Congress in 1987 to enhance the competitiveness and performance of U.S. businesses. The award, named after the 26th Secretary of Commerce, promotes excellence in organizational performance, recognizes the achievements and results of U.S. organizations, and publicizes successful performance strategies. Afterwards, President Bush delivered remarks on National Small Business Week – a conference that brings together small business owners, corporations, trade associations, Federal government employees, and community leaders to further the development of small businesses nationwide.

"I love it when people can say, I have a idea, and I am going to apply all my talent and all my effort to see the idea come to fruition. It is what made us great in the past, it's what makes us great today, and what is going to make us great in the future. And I hope you take great pride in the contributions that you're making to your community, your family and your nation."

President Bush made remarks at the White House Summit on Inner-City Children and Faith-Based Schools. In his 2008 State of the Union Address, President Bush announced this summit as an opportunity to help increase awareness of the challenges faced by low-income students in the inner cities and address the role of non-public schools, including faith-based schools, in meeting the needs of low-income inner city students. Afterwards, the President met with President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority.

“Over the past seven years we have worked to strengthen the public school system. In other words, we haven't given up on public schools; quite the contrary, we've tried to help them succeed by passing the No Child Left Behind Act. In some circles it's controversial. I don't think it should be controversial, however, to demand high standards for every child. I don't think it should be controversial to insist upon accountability to see if those children are meeting those standards. And I don't think it should be viewed as controversial to say to a public school, if children are falling behind, here's supplementary services to help that individual child catch up.”

Later, President Bush made remarks to Members of Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride, which provides rehabilitative cycling events for severely injured service members. The annual Wounded Warrior Project bike ride in its current format, "White House to Lighthouse," is celebrating its second year this April. These Wounded Warriors will bike 65 miles from the South Lawn of the White House to Walter Reed to Annapolis, Maryland, over a span of three days to raise awareness of the capabilities of our injured service men and women.

"These service members are focused on what you have to give than what you've lost. I appreciate the spirit of those in the Soldier Ride. I thank my fellow citizens for supporting our troops. I appreciate the fact that the families have stood by those who wear the uniform. I appreciate your loved ones who are here today to cheer you on. The riders represent the spirit of the strongest military in the world, and the greatest country on Earth. I'm thankful that we have brave men and women like you who step forward to protect America. I'm proud to be your Commander-in-Chief."

President Bush signed the Presidential Proclamation in honor of Malaria Awareness Day. In 2005, President Bush launched the President's Malaria Initiative to cut the number of malaria-related deaths in 15 African nations by half. In only two years, the PMI has helped provide bed nets, anti-malarial medicine, insecticide sprays, and prenatal drugs to more than 25 million people in sub-Saharan Africa. Upon departing, President Bush made a statement on the Economic Rebate Stimulus checks which will start arriving on Monday, April 28th. Later, he visited the Northwest Boys & Girls Club to highlight efforts by club members to help fight malaria in sub-Saharan Africa and to encourage other Americans to join in this important effort. Afterwards, the President delivered a statement on Malaria Awareness Day.

“On this day, we remember those who died from malaria. In other words, an awareness day is one in which you recognize the consequences, in this case, of this disease. And so we mourn the loss of life, especially and including the children who have needlessly died on the continent of Africa and elsewhere. They died because of a mosquito bite. This is a day of hope, however, as well. And the reason it is, because nations once trapped in fear because of malaria are now tackling malaria head on. And they're doing so with our help.”
