Hey Shanghai!

How U doing U fine young thing! Another weekend is upon us here in sunny Shangers, and all the pomp and frill associated with that. Bar openings? Is there any this week?

Well first a little house keeping. LOgO bar is closed until May 8 -- they're just finishing up their renovations. They tell us Blue Frog on Tongren is closed for renovations as well, and word on the street is that Park 97 is slated for a large scale revamping, rebranding, and relaunching. That should be interesting to see what they can come up with. As a dwindling number of you know, Park -- along with a number of other now closed club -- was a staple of Shanghai back in the day... shall we say, "Old" Shanghai.

Speaking of closing. SmartShanghai Forum. Gone. And to put the rumours at rest, it wasn't the fuzzzzz that wanted it stopped. It was just its time... we hope all of you are finding productive things to do with the extra 5 or 10 minutes you have for your day now. I've been reading up on the awesomeness that's coming our way this summer. IRON MAN. Oh yeah. Plus Narnia and Harry Potter sequels. Hell, I'll go on record and admit it. I like Narnia. Whatever. As if you don't. Bring that shit on.

In the news: some people were mad at other people, distortion in the media, Olympics, blah, blah, blah.

Finally, here is where some people in some clubs are throwing some parties that you can go throw your money at: Tonight, trance hippies and Ital-o's unite at MAO for a Magic Garden party. You kids know about these ones so I'm not even going to go into that one further. Traaaaaacers! Anar Bar has Ozone, Fish, and Ben Huang serving up something loungey - could be good for a laid back, no pretension cocktail with friends. For hardcore (and wealthy) clubbers Hed Kandi is at Bar Rouge and Ministry of Sound is at Attica. Which will you choose? That's a real clash of the titans there.

But if you're looking for something else in the same area, hit up I Love Shanghai for their Absinth Annihilation night.

Incidentally, I ran into the absinth rep. at one of the bars on my many journeys and I asked him if that absinth is actually real. He said... I can't remember what he said actually -- I was drunk. It was something like, "It's real but -- something, something -- and it's illegal in America too."

Anyways, and it's Jeff's birthday (bar manager) there too and he's turning 38, so offer your condolences on that. Wow, he's really old. Time to make some changes, Jeffy. Gotta get your life sorted out.

Saturday? Both Muse and M2 have your big time DJ party for the weekend so scroll down for details on that if you care. The Shelter has the best DnB in town going and Pau***r offers something bizarre: a tribute to German pop songs of the 60s and 70s! Yikes! Scroll down and check out that event flyer. It's a theatre of hair.

Live music? There's a few going on at the usual haunts but nothing big time (in my humble, humble opinion of course). My pick for the weekend is the Rock-Electro-Ratio show at Windows Tembo on Saturday (SmSh article here). Should be a fair crowd at that one and good time RnR on the stage.

Don't give your money to child beggars. It contributes to child labour and trafficking.

Send your money to me (address available on request).

Joke of the week

A helicopter was flying around above Seattle when an electrical malfunction disabled all of the aircraft's electronic navigation and communications equipment.

Due to the clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter's position. The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, and held up a handwritten sign that said "WHERE AM I?" in large letters. People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER."

The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to SEATAC airport, and landed safely. After they were on the ground, the copilot asked the pilot how he had done it.

"I knew it had to be the Microsoft Building, because they gave me a technically correct but completely useless answer."
