*California State assemblywoman Nancy Lieber (D) has reintroduced=20
her anti-spanking bill to the California state assembly. The bill=20
amends the current child abuse statute to now define as child abuse=20
spanking with an implement such as "a stick, a rod, a switch, an=20
electrical cord, an extension cord, a belt, a broom or a shoe." There=20
are more than a few grandmas that will find themselves on the way to the=
=20
pokey if this bill passes.=20=20
My knee jerk response was that this is but more liberal,=20
narcissistic nosiness; an appeal to protect children as a pretense to=20
supplant individual rights with state dictates. The current law already=
=20
makes it a crime for any person to "willfully cause harm=85or inflict upon=
=20
a child unjustifiable physical pain or mental suffering." What can be=20
gained by amending this language other than to have social workers and=20
police officers second guessing parents when they choose to use corporal=
=20
punishment to discipline their children?=20
It is also notable that Lieber has no children of her own.=20=20
Certainly the irony of a woman that has never raised children presuming=20
to legislate how parents can and can't discipline their children can't=20
be lost on the bill's supporters.=20=20
However, more studied meditation has me wondering if Lieber like=20
so many of our particular generation is simply eschewing the old school=20
notions of sparing the rod and spoiling the child in favor of a new=20
school idea of less strident disciplinary measures. Having been on the=20
receiving end of the old school rod=85the shoe, the belt, the switch, (in=
=20
fact it might be easier for me to list those things with which I was not=
=20
hit as a child), I am similarly inclined not to visit such trauma on my=20
own children.=20=20
It may indeed be that Lieber's heart is in the right place.=20=20
Nevertheless, the bill is a direct assault on the rights of parents and=20
it would be a shame to sacrifice freedom on the altar of noble ambition.
I have from time to time engaged in a bit of "tactile aid" with my=
=20
sons and there have been occasions that I have used a belt to discipline=
=20
them. Oh, I bluster a great deal. I threaten and make a big show of=20
pulling out "the belt" (cue scary music), but I can count on one hand=20
the number of times I have actually used it. In my capacity as a=20
responsible parent, I used my discretion and deemed the breech of house=20
rules sufficient that I used a belt when they were disciplined. It=20
wasn't pleasant for them. It hurt! It was meant to. And herein lays=20
the issue.

VERONICA'S VIEW: The Empathy of Apathy

*I've never thought much about apathy and how pervasive it is,=20
until lately. I guess it's rather apathetic of me not to think much=20
about apathy. It's not only apathetic but it's phlegmatic which again=20
underscores my point - apathy is pervasively, circuitous.
While I'm just a sista trying to maneuver through the morass of=20
life, I'm no cerebral slouch either. I use a lot of my mental faculties,=
=20
most of the time. So thinking about apathy was not a serendipitous act.=
=20
It was a road I was destined to travel.=20
Apathy is a noun; a part of speech that we have all been taught to=
=20
understand is a person, place or a thing. So with apathy being a thing,=20
it remains one of the great intangibles in life. Succinctly put, apathy=20
is benign neglect, persistent unconcern, and emotional dullness about=20
anything that doesn't directly impale our survival.
While we can't touch apathy, we can certainly feel it. While we=20
can't point and say, "ah ha" there it is, we see it all around us,=20
blanketing our existence like a nylon tarp.
Apathy is endemic. It is ubiquitous. It is a still water that=20
runs wide and deep. And when apathy spreads its tentacles, its writhing=20
web not only enshrouds our consciousness ever so willfully, it chokes=20
it.
So what triggered my thoughts about apathy? Well, off the hem of=20
my skirt, a lot of things such as watching increasing societal=20
indifference about humanity, multiplied and divided by pervasive=20
listlessness in the community in which I live, plus the mounting=20
melancholy among our youth, minus good old fashion hope evident in the=20
deadpan gaze in the eyes of strangers and people close to my heart. If=20
this isn't an equation for apathy, then I'm back to the dry erase board.

Dear Advice Chick,
*I hired a stripper to my home for entertaining a ladies group=20
which I am associated with. Everyone had a wonderful time and after the=20
performance he was interested in keeping in contact with me. I was taken=

by surprise but agreed, we both are single. Over the months things have=20
been ok, due to his schedule we see each other when we can, my dilemma=20
is there is a 19 year difference in age, me being the elder.=20
Most people are surprised as it is not visible for me at all. For=20
a long time I kept him a secret from my friends I guess out of shame, he=

is no longer a secret and he never cared if people knew about us in the=20
first place. Frankly they all assumed there was something going on=20
anyway. He performed for my Birthday, he has given private dances for=20
me, he is far more mature than I had expected. I care for him dearly, he=
=20
has no children, I have two, when we are together we have a good time.=20
He often invites me to his show which it is really difficult to watch=20
other women all over him but that's what he does as a secondary income,=20
and he is damn good at it too. My question is should I be concerned=20
about the age difference?=20

REGGAE UPDATES FROM JAMAICA: RDX signs with Universal Japan;=20

Dancehall duo RDX snaps album deal with Universal Music Japan
*Dancehall duo RDX has signed with Universal Music Japan. The=20
one-album deal, with possible options, was recently sealed by the duo's=20
publishing company, Jamdown Music, which is based in the UK.
Carlton 'Renegade' Williams, one half of the RDX duo declined to=20
disclose much about the deal, when contacted for a comment on the=20
weekend. "It was handled by our publishing company, Jamdown Music, and=20
we are working on an album that is coming out this summer in Japan,"=20
said Williams.
The album, which is still untitled, will contain 14 tracks=20
including two bonus cuts. "The songs that people know RDX for will all=20
be there, plus many more. We have a collaboration with Richie Stephens=20
and there might be a surprise or two, but I can't say much more right=20
now," Williams added. RDX comprises Williams and Andre 'Delomar'=20
Bedward. The duo shot to the top of the charts last year with hits=20
including Dance and Everybody Dance. They picked up an award for Best=20
Duo/Group at the recently held EME Awards. Subsequently, the duo was=20
nominated in the Reggae Academy and Irie FM Music Awards.
RDX formed in 2005, after both members broke away from the=20
Xcytement Gang trio. The other member of that outfit is currently=20
pursing other musical interests.
Williams declined to state what the deal meant in terms of=20
monetary value. However, a source close to the duo reliably informed the=
=20
Observer that the deal was close to US$50,000.
Williams stated that the duo has creative control over the album.=20
A video for the song Everybody Dance will be re-shot on film under the=20
direction of Rick Elgood. "We will be adding a club scene to the video,=20
but we still want to keep the Dutty Fridayz theme," said Williams.
RDX is currently being managed by Dwayne Edwards of R&R Records.=20
The duo's latest single, Dancers Anthem, is already making moves on the=20
charts.
Universal Music Japan (UMusic Japan) is a subsidiary of the US=20
based Universal Music Group (UMG). It is the largest record label in=20
Japan. Universal Music Group has a 25.5 % market share and is a wholly=20
owned subsidiary of Vivendi.=20

IT'S OVER FOR STAR JONES AND AL REYNOLDS: Former TV host files for=20
divorce after four years.
*Star Jones has spent the past four years denying various rumors about=
=20
her marriage to Al Reynolds, but it turns out the breakup reports of=20
late are true.
In a statement to Entertainment Tonight, the 46-year-old former TV host=
=20
announced she has filed for divorce from Reynolds after nearly four=20
years of marriage.
"Several years ago I made an error in judgment by inviting the=20
media into the most intimate area of my life," Jones said in her=20
statement. "A month ago I filed for divorce. The dissolution of a=20
marriage is a difficult time in anyone's life that requires privacy with=
=20
one's thoughts."=20

The statement concludes: "I have committed myself to handling=20
this situation with dignity and grace and look forward to emerging from=20
this period as a stronger and wiser woman."

Reynolds, a 39-year-old banker, married Jones in 2004 in an=20
elaborate ceremony criticized by many for its rampant use of corporate=20

Meanwhile, TMZ.com is reporting that Reynolds is already lining up=20
high-powered divorce attorneys for his upcoming battle, including=20
Stanford Lotwin, who handled splits for Howard Stern, Donald Trump, and=20
Diana Ross, among others.
In the meantime, Reynolds plans to finish out the semester at=20
Florida Memorial University, where he is a professor, according to TMZ.
'THAT'S SO RAVEN'S' ORLANDO BROWN MISSING: Actor, 20, last seen headed=20
to a 7-Eleven in Studio City, Calif.
*Family and friends of "That's So Raven" star Orlando Brown are=20
concerned after losing all contact with the actor since early Tuesday=20
morning, People reported.
As of press time, the 20-year-old was last seen leaving his=20
manager's house around 10:20 a.m. to make a quick trip to 7-Eleven.=20
According to Brown's publicist, Elayne Rivers, his day was crowded with=20
meetings and appointments in preparation for a photo shoot Wednesday.=20

JUANITA BYNUM VISITS TV'S 'DIVORCE COURT': Televangelist to discuss her=20
drama on episodes airing today and tomorrow.=20
*In a special two-part episode of "Divorce Court," televangelist=20
Juanita Bynum will confirm that she is completely through with her=20
marriage to minister Thomas W. Weeks III, who is currently on probation=20
for beating her in a hotel parking lot.
In episodes scheduled to air Thursday and Friday, Bynum says she=20
and Weeks are not planning to reconcile, and in fact, she is "done" with=
=20
the entire relationship.

"I can't speak for him, but I no longer want the marriage," she=20
told Judge Lynn Toler.=20

Weeks' divorce attorney, Randy Kessler, said on Tuesday that the=20

community service and undergo counseling.

but are being very cautious," a source told the column. "There's a=20
certain amount of heat associated with Simpson."=20
DENZEL, JOE BROWN AMONG SNIPES SUPPORTERS: Famous friends write=20
character references for actor ahead of today's sentencing.
*Denzel Washington and Judge Joe Brown are among several noted=20
celebrities who are supporting Wesley Snipes ahead of his sentencing=20
today on tax charges.
Thirty-one character references were submitted by Snipes' legal team,=20
according to Ocala, Fla's Star-Banner newspaper. The letters are written=
=20
to Senior U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges, who is scheduled=20
to sentence Snipes today on three counts of willfully failing to file=20
tax returns.
Snipes faces up to three years in jail and possibly $5 million or more=20
in fines. His legal team hopes letters from Washington, Brown, Woody=20
Harrelson and others will encourage the judge to go easy.=20
"Wesley is like a tree - a mighty oak," Washington wrote in his letter=20
to the judge, adding he has known the actor for 20 years. "Many who know=

him have witnessed the fruit of his labors, have sat in his shade and=20

POLICE QUESTION TREACH IN NEWARK: Rapper detained amidst rash of gun=20
violence within 24 hours period.
*Treach of the rap group Naughty By Nature got caught up in a police=20
investigation of multiple shootings that took place throughout Newark,=20
New Jersey within a 24-hour period.=20
Local police say the rapper was detained and questioned as gunfire was=20
erupting all over Newark. Two men had shot and killed each other during=20
a gun battle, a man and a woman were shot in the face, a third man was=20
shot in the leg, one man was shot when bullets pierced his front door,=20
while another man was shot in the foot, reports Allhihpop.com.
Treach was pulled over in his Hummer for driving erratically when=
=20
it was discovered that he was wearing a bulletproof vest. No weapons=20
were found in the car, but cops recovered a gun nearby, the Web site=20
reported.

Additionally, a 27-year-old man was arrested for shooting a=20
police sergeant, as well as two other shootings that the man committed=20

WENDY WILLIAMS TO DEBUT FOX TALK SHOW: NY-based radio jock to host an=20
hour-long celebrity-driven program.
*Radio maven Wendy Williams will host a syndicated talk show that has=20
been cleared for Fox affiliates in four cities beginning July 14,=20
reports the New York Daily News.
Airing daytime in a yet-unspecified time slot, the hour-long daily show=
=20
will feature Williams interviewing various celebrities. It's scheduled=20
for an initial six week run in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and=20
Detroit.=20
The gossip queen will continue to host her afternoon radio show,=20
which is nationally syndicated 2-6 p.m. daily from New York's WBLS=20

KANYE/ALEXIS BREAKUP RUMORS: Are they really broken up? Chicago=20
Sun-Times does some investigating.
*The Chicago Sun-Times quotes a "close friend" of Kanye West and his=20
ex-fianc=E9e Alexis Phifer who says their split may not be as final as=20
recent reports suggest.
According to the newspaper's Bill Zwecker, the source said Tuesday:
"I'm not convinced they are truly, totally over. They have had their ups=
=20
and downs and, sure, things aren't working for them now. But I still=20
think at some point Kanye will realize this is a great girl. She knew=20
him before he had really hit it big - though he was on his way. It's the=

ones who were there with you, before fame hit, that make the best=20

The "close friend" also expressed concern that the breakup will=20
give new life to rumors surrounding West's sexuality. He's been labeled=20

"Gangstas and Thugs," Michael Alfinez, 18, of Lake Worth, also copped to=

He was arrested on charges of elderly abuse, discharging a=20
firearm in public and improper exhibition of a dangerous weapon.=20=20
The video footage, seized during a traffic stop in January, shows=
=20
a disoriented elderly woman, Marie Huertas, cursing out the police,=20
holding stacks of cash and making statements such as, "This is for all=20
the pigs" and "I'll shoot you," while brandishing the gun.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
A voice off camera tells Huertas what to say, according to the=20
report, and at one point in the video someone puts a black mask on her=20
head.

Alfinez's mother, Michelle, called the arrest a misunderstanding.
"This is my mother. This is his grandmother," she said. "Just today when=
=20
he called me he said, 'Tell grandma I love her very much.' And she told=20
me, 'Tell Mikey I love him, too.'"

Detectives questioned Huertas and asked her the date to determine=
=20
her mental capacity, she told him it was February 1908. She also stated=20
that she didn't know what a video was, according to the report. When the=
=20
detective showed Huertas the video, she said, "They are making a=20
criminal out of me."
She said she was ashamed and doesn't normally use that type of language,=
=20
the report says.

Huertas' doctor advised investigators that she "does not have the=

capacity to consent."
