  from Kyle Phillips
April 25 is La Festa della Liberazione, the day Italians celebrate liberation from the Nazi-Fascist Regime (on that day in 1945 the Partisans freed Milano). Good things to celebrate, and if the weather's nice people generally go out of town, either to the country or the beach to enjoy the first rays of the season. This year the 25th will also be the second V-Day or Vaffan(ahem) day, with a huge rally (last year 300 thousand went) organized by Beppe Grillo, former comedian and now a very effective grass roots political agitator who doesn't mince words in pointing out the failings of those in power, be they left or right wing. This time it's the right, and he's going after the way the government and the various political parties/special interest groups control the flow of information.

Arancini di Riso
If you're going to be wandering about (or at a rally) you probably won't be able to sit down to eat. Arancini, the golden Sicilian fried rice balls with tasty fillings are perfect in these situations. And very nice at any time, really.

La Focaccia Ligure
The other obvious thing to enjoy outside is a sandwich, and Liguria's focaccia -- a thin bread -- split open is absolutely perfect for this sort of thing. The only problem I have ever encountered with focaccia is that people want more, and more, and more...

What to Put Into a Focaccia?
Colds cuts of some sort, and Italy boasts an extraordinary variety. You'll find many of the more common things, including prosciutto, mortadella, salami, finocchiona, capocollo, and so on here.

Top Picks - Favorite Italian Grilled Meats  from your Italian Food Guide
If you live in (or visit) the heart of an Italian city you might not realize the degree to which Italian cooking revolves around the grill. If you head out into the suburbs, however, come mealtime and especially on holidays or weekends you're certain to smell the rich aromas of grilling meats, rising up from backyard barbecues...

1) Getting Out of Town: Tuscan Beaches
Tuscany has all sorts of coastlines - beaches good for lounging and socializing, beaches good for listening to the wind, coves that make for wonderful diving, and marshlands (if you'd rather be birding). Tuscany's coastline begins at Bocca di Magra, the mouth of the Magra River. This is a quick north-south rundown of some of the beach towns.

2) In Italian: Beppe Grillo
Beppe Grillo's Blog, with news on V-Day and all sorts of other things. Interesting reading, because he shines light on things most would rather have shadowed, if not hidden completely.

3) A Bolt From The Blue on a Tuscan Red
A scandal is sweeping its way through Brunello, Tuscan's (and perhaps Italy's) most important red wine. Here's Elisabetta Polovedo's take on the situation, from a recent issue of the NY Times.
