National Ocean Service: Education
Oceans, coasts, charting, and navigation topics treated on this government site.
http://www.educationworld.com/awards/2008/r0408-18.shtml
REVIEW: A+
This National Ocean Service site offers teachers a wealth of resources about oceans, coasts, and charting and navigation. There are three main categories of materials: Kits, Stories, and Classroom. The Kits describe the scientific principles underlying the applied science and activities of NOAA’s National Ocean Service (NOS). Each kit includes: a tutorial, including photographs, videos, illustrations and interactive graphics; a roadmap to resources via a collection of comprehensively annotated links; and lesson plans that contain background information and resource material and are correlated to National Science Education Standards. The kits cover such topics as corals, currents, estuaries, geodesy, nonpoint source pollution, and tides and water levels. The stories are case studies drawn from the research of NOS and provide students an opportunity for inquiry based learning. They include student and teacher guides, interactive quizzes, exercises with
real data and interviews with NOS scientists. In the classroom, teachers will find a collection of standards based lesson plans based on the major thematic areas of the National Ocean Service (NOS). Each lesson includes focus questions, objectives, background information, evaluations, and extensions.

NRICH
Rich-media math resources from Cambridge for students grades 3-12.
http://www.educationworld.com/awards/2008/r0408-16.shtml
REVIEW: A+
Teachers and students will find that NRICH provides rich media content, including games, interactive puzzles, and movies that teach various concepts in math. New content is published each month and there is also an archive of past months. The problems are selected each month to offer a variety of skills at different age levels along with supporting materials such as articles, games, and other resources. The packages offer teachers the opportunity to download and use offline, bundles of NRICH resources that help to develop a mathematical idea, and include extra guidance for using the resources in the classroom. There are packages for every age level dealing with a variety of concepts. The articles section offers teachers and students information on a range of topics from an introduction to magic squares to thinking about different ways of thinking. The Maths Finder offers visitors a way to find problems by choosing from more than two dozen curricu
lum topics. Additionally, there is a problem of the week and an "Ask NRICH" web-board that is monitored by a team of mathematicians who are ready to answer your math questions.

Kids Math Games
Elementary (Math, that is) – fun teacher-created site.
http://www.educationworld.com/awards/2008/r0408-14.shtml
REVIEW: B+
This site was produced by teacher John Rickey and offers kids hours of free interactive fun with an educational focus. The games cover such broad topics as time, graphing, measuring, counting, geometry, money, patterns, fractions, and calculators. Teachers will appreciate the worksheet generators for creating customized worksheets for the classroom. The generators are easy to use and offer worksheets for graphing, double digit addition, counting base ten block, money, general math, time, patterns, and minute math.

Each week, Education World spotlights books of interest to educators. This week, read a brief summary of two more of our "top 50 books for educators."
Multicultural Education: Issues and Perspectives
No doubt one of the most important topics in education today, multicultural education, is thoroughly treated in this 500-page sixth edition. The book deals with such topics as high-stakes testing in the context of multiculturalism, asking whether such tests are a social justice issue. The book also raises the fascinating question of trying to define what "culture" really is in modern, information-swamped America. With activities listed at the end of each chapter, this book is both thought provoking and practical.

Reluctant Disciplinarian: Advice on Classroom Management
From a Softy Who Became (Eventually) a Successful Teacher
A long title, but luckily it really tells you why this book is valuable. So many people do get into education for what might be called "soft" reasons -- love of children, love of learning, a desire to make people's lives better. Those of us who have such "soft" motivations in our personality often find it hard to be the militaristic, marching-orders person that classroom management sometimes requires. Here's our guidebook!
