  Inside: This Week in Autos
Ah, spring. Who wouldn't want to put the top down on a convertible and go for a long drive in the country? Not so many people as you might think. Thanks to the economic malaise, high gas prices and general concerns about the environment, convertible sales, which normally tend to rise in the spring, look to be flat or down this year. Granted, convertibles represent a small percentage of overall sales for the automakers so a drop won't have a significant impact on the bottom line but this year the news continues bad in nearly every automotive category. However, if you absolutely must buy a convertible this spring, check out our lineup of 13 convertibles for under $30,000—which should help to ease the financial pain at least. Elsewhere this week we looked at the proposed alliance between Chrysler and Nissan to develop and build vehicles together. As Detroit bureau chief David Welch points out, this could be just what the two carmakers need to jumpstart sales. Also, we looked at the impact Toyota's rising labor costs at its U.S. plants could have on its profitability and test drove the new 2008 VW R32. Enjoy.

"Tax credits for home builders socializes losses and privatizes profits. This digs a deeper hole for the housing industry and the economy. Free market capitalism is a myth."

Detroit has lost over 100,000 auto jobs in the last two-plus years, devastating the Michigan economy and tax rolls. But a new report by the Center for Automotive Research says a hiring binge will begin by this fall, continuing through to the middle of the next decade. closequote
