STEVEN IVORY: Nothing Stands in the Way
=20=20=20=20
*"It's here," Kevin said somberly to me over the phone regarding=20
the U-haul van parking down on Vermont Avenue in front of his Los Feliz=20
apartment building. He seemed alternately elated and melancholy as he=20
bid farewell to "Nihil Obstat."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The dynamic, moody abstract, which stretched nearly a wall's=20
length of Kevin's small living room, was the first thing the 32 year-old=
=20
Chicago native painted the year he arrived in Los Angeles in the summer=20
of 2000. He'd come west, he said, to escape something far more brutal=20
than Windy City winters--a family of academic achievers who declared him=
=20
insane for pursuing a career in the arts.
=20=20=20=20
He'd been in L.A. two days when in a neighborhood alley he=20
discovered the huge discarded white wooden panel--a spectacular surface=20
on which to cast his emotions. For $10 a homeless man helped him lug it=
=20
the three blocks home.
=20=20=20=20
They were negotiating the entrance to the 1940s apartment building,=
=20
when up the street came a tiny, meticulously dressed solemn looking=20
Latin lady, elderly but fit and determined in stride, small cart of=20
groceries in tow.
=20=20=20=20
When it was clear the woman's destination was the apartment=20
building, Kevin offered a polite smile and said they'd be done in a=20
second.
=20=20=20=20
The lady stood for a second or two, muttered something under her=20
breath and impatiently edged herself past them and into the building.=20
Kevin wondered to his homeless assistant, also Latin, what the lady had=20
said. "Nothing bad," he assured. "Nihil Obstat--something like, 'Nothing=
=20
stands in the way.'"
=20=20=20=20
Twice during the next week, Kevin, en route to his job as a waiter,=
=20
ran into the lady in the apartment lobby. He spoke; she didn't.
=20=20=20=20=20=20
However, one afternoon two weeks later, work on his painting was=20
interrupted by a weak but urgent knock at his door. It was the obstinate=
=20
lady. "I am Miss Garcia," she announced with a half smile, and pushed a=20
foil-covered platter into his chest.
=20=20=20=20
Perplexed, Kevin lifted the aluminum and then graciously thanked=20
her for the chicken and rice. Miss Garcia didn't hear him; her=20
attention was focused on his dramatic painting in progress, which=20
overwhelmed the room.
=20=20=20=20
Sensing her interest, Kevin told her he was calling the work "Nihil=
=20
Obstat," the phrase the homeless man told him she uttered that day=20
downstairs. Those words, he said, were now his motto: Absolutely nothing=
=20
would stand in the way of his goals.
=20=20=20
His ambitions were lost on Miss Garcia. She gazed at the painting a=
=20
few more seconds more and abruptly left.
=20=20
Kevin said he couldn't blame her. The piece had become his=20
emotional albatross. In the brilliant splashes of color representing his=
=20
courageous migration, Kevin also saw the lingering pain of rejection and=
=20
personal loss.
=20=20=20=20=20
Nothing seemed to be working for him in L.A. His men's clothing=20
line evoked indifference among Neiman Marcus execs. Fred Segal called=20
regarding his woman's jewelry samples but only to say come get them.=20=20=
=20=20=20

=20=20=20=20
Thus, a week later, when the man on the phone with a thick, deep=20
German accent on the phone identified himself as the apartment building=20
owner, Kevin braced for the worse. The paint specks on Kevin's hardwood=20
floor in the living room, said the gentleman, would have to be cleaned.
=20=20=20=20
As Kevin pondered how he knew about those, the man launched into=20
apologies for entering Kevin's apartment without notice. He realized a=20
law had been broken, but he had to go in--Miss Garcia insisted.
=20=20=20=20
The old lady, he explained, once lived in that very apartment with=20
Mr. Garcia, a mild-mannered oil painter who took his last breath there,=20
succumbing to cancer. After insisting the businessman see for himself=20
how Kevin had "abused the property," the owner realized he'd been duped=20
by Miss Garcia into viewing Kevin's captivatingly expressive=20
work--which, the spirit of her late husband, Miss Garcia believed, had=20
a hand in creating.=20=20
=20=20=20=20
Regardless, said the gentleman, "as an avid collector, which Miss=20
Garcia well knows, I am prepared to offer an equitable price for your=20
piece."
=20=20=20=20
Kevin, delightfully speechless, rebounded to inquire why the=20
businessman simply didn't ask to see the work instead of sneaking into=20
his place. "Because Miss Garcia said artists are 'tender souls,'" said=20
the collector. "She did not want you to be hurt if I didn't like it."

A week after that phone call, Kevin, ambivalent about saying=20
good-bye to "Nihil Obstat," now understood he was letting go of more=20
than a painting. No matter what Nihil Obstat really meant, nothing,=20
Kevin reaffirmed, would stand in his way--not even a beloved painting=20
created in honor of his declaration. Whatever he was emotionally unable=
=20
to put in perspective, the five-figure check did.
=20=20=20=20
When I arrived at Kevin's building, the buyer's workmen already had=
=20
the piece downstairs. They seemed annoyed with the uncharacteristically=20
gregarious Miss Garcia, who, having chastised Kevin for offering her a=20
commission, told the men how to do their job.
=20=20=20=20
The U-haul slowly merged into Vermont Avenue traffic, got to=20
Franklin and made a right. Kevin and Miss Garcia both silently watched=20
the truck until it was positively out of sight as she waved good-bye to=
=20
a loving past, and he welcomed a brilliant future. Sometimes, the=20
emotions are the same.=20

THE BRIDGE: Thick, Healthy or Fat?=20
-- by Darryl James=20

*I remember in the late 1980's when Black men first started using=20
the word "thick" to define a woman with ample bottom and/or breasts. We=20
knew what we were describing and it was more about T & A than the result=
=20
of too many Twinkies, Ho-Hos, Moo-Moos and Cow-Cows.

We also knew that "healthy" was a term reserved for women with a=20
little meat on their bones. They really were considered healthy because=20
they ate regular meals (that they often cooked at home) and had=20
beautiful bountiful bodies to show for it. They were proportionate and=20
anything but obese.

But I remember that the term "thick" was co-opted in the 1990's by=
=20
overweight women who wanted to redefine America's view of women=20
(particularly the ones on the heavy side), and change the way overweight=
=20
women viewed themselves.

Now, I'm all for people looking for ways to feel good about=20
themselves, but if it is not based on reality and is actually=20
inadvertently promoting and celebrating an unhealthy lifestyle, then=20
it's not a good thing.

Since the big girls dig brothers like me, some have been=20
aggressive and when rebuffed (even though done politely), they often=20
claim that I'm not a "real" Black man. After all, "real" Black men like=20
big girls.

Right?=20

Not really.

"Real" Black men like a variety of women, because "real" Black men=
=20
come in a variety themselves. Some of us do like the big girls, but=20
some of us like the ladies who have little body fat, except where it=20
counts.

Most of us probably know at least one or two Black men who like=20
the big girls.

And, all across the nation, clubs specifically for big girls and=20
the men who love them are popping up on the landscape.

So that means that being a big girl is a good thing.

Right?

Wrong.

THE MO'KELLY REPORT: 50 Cent, Alicia Keys is Right ... Fool
-- by Morris O'Kelly

*Let's start with the recent quotes and then get straight to the=20
clownin' of an idiot.

"'Gangsta rap' was a ploy to convince black people to kill each=20
other. 'Gangsta rap' didn't exist." - Alicia Keys (in an interview with=20
Blender Magazine

In response, Curtis "50 Cent" offered the following ignorance.

"I don't like Alicia Keys no more though =85 the same reason why I said=
=20
that I don't like Oprah Winfrey. I'm prejudiced. I don't like people=20
who don't like me. If you don't like the content that I write because of=
=20
my experiences; I am being who I am when I am writing it. I fall into=20
that 'label' as far as you considering artists creating 'Gangsta music,'=
=20
we fall into that.

"If she don't like that, (then) I don't like that classical music s---=20
she be doing. At some point she's playing some s--- that don't relate to=
=20
me. =85 We listen to it and try to figure out why people actually enjoy=20
it. I am trying to enjoy it. That statement changes my perception of=20
Alicia Keys totally. But the magazine is standing behind it, which means=
=20
they probably have a tape of her in conversation saying it. It's just=20
not really a bright comment anyway." - 50 Cent (Village Idiot)

Put a post-it note on the above information=85we'll come back to it=20
later.

Mo'Kelly has worked for a number of record labels, including Warner=20
Bros., Virgin/Rap-A-Lot and Interscope. The very same Interscope Records=
=20
which serves as the parent company to the G-Unit imprint label which has=
=20
distributed the whole of Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's music career. That=20
would also be the same Warner Bros. Records that released Ice T's, Cop=20
Killa. Mo'Kelly was mentored by the legend Dick Griffey; the same "Dick=20
Griffey" who mentored Suge Knight and helped fund Death Row Records. It=20
was because of an article that Mo'Kelly wrote for the L.A. Times in 1996=
=20
on the death of Tupac Shakur that Griffey reached out to Mo'Kelly. We=20
spoke in length about the shameful realities of the music business and=20
"who" is to blame.

So be very clear Curtis (and others) from whence Mo'Kelly's forthcoming=
=20
supposed "not really bright" comment comes. Mo'Kelly was working in the=20
world of Hip-Hop long before anybody cared to cavort to the seminal 50=20
Cent song, In Da' Club. Mo'Kelly was taught by the same man who taught=20
your mentor Dr. Dr=E9.

You're WAY out of your league Curtis, attempting to lecture folks on=20
the reality of the music industry, brandishing the tools of=20
indefatigable ignorance to support your misguided point no less. Not=20
only that, you owe Alicia Keys an apology. Not that you ever will give=20
her one, but it needs to be said=85and ultimately needs to be done. You=20
are not an honorable man and respect for womanhood is not within you.=20
Nevertheless, you owe Alicia Keys (and countless other women) an=20
apology.

If anyone is really "not really bright," in his/her comments, it=20
irrefutably is Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.

Here's why ...

PEOPLE OF NOTE: New Federal Theatre Champions Sweet Mama Stringbean=20=20=
=20=20=20=20
-- by Deardra=20
Shuler

*Sandra Reaves-Phillips heads the cast of "Sweet Mama Stringbean,"=
=20
a musical based on the life of the legendary Ethel Waters. Born in=20
Chester, Pennsylvania, in1896, to a 12 year old rape victim, Waters' own=
=20
childhood was filled with poverty and hardships.=20=20

In fact, Waters led a life so devoid of motherly love, her only=20
ambition as a young girl was to clean the homes of white people. Never=20
a child, Waters married when she was 13, thereby surviving what turned=20
out to be a short termed union with an abusive man.=20

The rigors of her childhood bore little hint of the great singer=20
and actress she was to become. A chance opportunity at a night club=20
while celebrating her seventeenth birthday won her the opportunity to=20
sing two songs that led to her hire as a singer at the Lincoln Theatre=20
in Baltimore, Maryland.=20=20

Ethel was soon to escape the drudgery of her former life and in=20
realizing this, Ethel never looked back.

JORDIN SPARKS PUT ON VOCAL REST BY DOCTORS: Career-threatening throat=20
injury has her temporarily sidelined from Alicia Keys tour.

*Jordin Sparks will miss the first month of her tour with Alicia Keys=20
after suffering from an acute vocal cord hemorrhage, according to=20
reports.

"Because of the risk of permanent vocal cord damage, Sparks has been=20
ordered to strict vocal rest and will not be able to perform anywhere=20
until her condition improves," said a spokesman for the arena at Penn=20
State, where she was to perform Sunday night.=20

The reigning "American Idol" champ also had to cancel an Earth=20
Day performance yesterday on the National Mall in Washington D.C., as=20
well as her opening act slot at Saturday night's launch of the Keys tour=
=20
in Hampton, VA.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"All of her April activities have been postponed or canceled so=20
she can take care of her voice properly," 19/Jive Records spokeswoman=20
Wendy Washington told The Associated Press.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
A medical Web site for the University of Pennsylvania described=20
bleeding in the vocal cord as "a serious problem . . . caused when a=20
person who has laryngitis uses their voice at the height of infection.=20
Some severe cases may require laser microsurgery.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"Jordin Sparks is expected to make a full and complete recovery,"=
=20
according to a statement from 19/Jive Records. "Sparks has been going=20
nonstop over the past two years and now she's going through the normal=20
course of learning how to manage and care for her voice."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Sparks, 18, is expected to return to the Alicia Keys tour in May.

MARIAH CAREY DRAMA REPORTED DURING 'IDOL': Crew members gripe over=20
singer's obsession with lighting and camera angles.

*"American Idol" crew members having to deal with Mariah Carey during=20
her guest appearance last week have some stories to tell.

Fox.com's Pop Tart column reports of lighting and camera technicians=20
complaining that she acted a complete diva while filming her=20
instructional segments with each "Idol" finalist.

The column reported Monday: Tech and camera guys apparently were=20
made to put in the extra effort putting up lights and having them angled=
=20
perfectly, with Carey's people "double checking" that she was positioned=
=20
perfectly at all times.

"We had to reshoot one of the questions," one cameraman told=20
Tarts.
"I had to change the lighting and alter the position and do it again=20
because we went off angle slightly. She has a director of photography=20
with her at all times and can only be shot from the waist up."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
[Carey] did lose quite a few fans on Thursday night when she=20
decided to turn up two hours late to an album-signing at Universal City.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"She strolled in with sunglasses on when it was nighttime and by=
=20
that point a lot of people got fed up and had left," a photographer told=
=20
Tarts. "It was ridiculous."

JESSE L. MARTIN IS 'COMING TO DINNER': Actor will jump from 'Law &=20
Order' to Broadway in play based on Poitier film.

*Jesse L. Martin has lined up a possible Broadway gig to follow=20
the end of his nine-year run on NBC's "Law & Order."=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The actor is currently in talks to star in "Guess Who's Coming to=
=20
Dinner," a new Broadway-aimed production based on the 1967 movie about a=
=20
white woman who brings her black fianc=E9 home to meet her parents.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Martin will play John Wade Prentice, the role played in the film=20
by Sidney Poitier. Kenny Leon ("A Raisin in the Sun") is attached to=20
direct the play, which is expected to begin rehearsals in August.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The roles of white parents Matt and Christina Drayton have yet to=
=20
be cast, however, a number of A-list names have been floating around,=20
including Michael Douglas, Diane Keaton and Sigourney Weaver.

Martin, whose last episode of "Law & Order" airs tomorrow night=20
(April 23) at 10, rose to prominence with his role in the original=20
Broadway production of "Rent."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
In related news, here is NBC's official episode synopsis of=20
Martin's final bow on "Law & Order":=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
A part-time referee is found murdered, and Detectives Ed Green
(Martin) and Cyrus Lupo (Jeremy Sisto) investigate the victim's gambling=
=20
habits. The detectives are led to notorious hustler, "Bunny" (guest star=
=20
Bobby Jones), a familiar face from Detective Green's past. When "Bunny"=20
is found dead, Detective Lupo is called to the scene and discovers his=20
partner, Detective Green, is the shooter causing confusion in the=20
department and disbelief in the DA's office. The case is turned over to=20
internal affairs Detective Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson) and Sergeant=
=20
Gregory Cole (guest star Peter Bradbury), leaving Detective Green to=20
face his dark past and in danger of losing his badge. Sam Waterston, S.=20
Epatha Merkerson, Linus Roache and Alana De La Garza also star.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20

TIA MOWRY IS A MARRIED WOMAN: Actress ties knot Sunday with actor Cory=20
Hardrict.

*Tia Mowry, star of CW's "The Game," got married last weekend to her=20
fianc=E9, 28-year-old actor Cory Hardrict. The two were engaged on=20
Christmas Day 2006.

The ceremony was held at the Biltmore Santa Barbara in front of 170=20
guests, reports People magazine. Crooner Kenny Lattimore was on hand to=20
perform "For You" as Mowry, 29, made her way down the aisle.=20

"You can tell they're really in love," wedding planner Robyn=20
Goldberg told People. "[Hardrict] wanted the wedding to be her dream=20
come true."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Mowry wore a couture wedding gown by Kevan Hall, while her twin=20
sister Tamera, who served as maid of honor, wore an aubergine gown by=20
Tadashi. The 30-minute outdoor ceremony was followed by a Midsummer=20
Night Dream-style reception in the hotel's ballroom.=20

OPRAH WINFREY SCHOOL TRIAL POSTPONED: South African court grants request=
=20
of defendant's lawyer.

*The trial of Tiny Virginia Makopo, a former dorm matron at Oprah=20
Winfrey's school in South Africa, was postponed on Monday because her=20
lawyer successfully argued that he needed more time to consult with his=20
client.

Makopo is accused of abusing students at Winfrey's school for=20
disadvantaged girls. Magistrate Thelma Simpson agreed to a request made=20
by Makopo's attorney and said a new trial date will likely take place in=
=20
July.
The exact date will be set during a provisional hearing on Friday.

Prosecutor Etienne Venter expressed frustration with the delay, saying=20
the state was prepared to begin the trial.

"We can't keep on dragging and dragging the case," he said.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Makopo has pleaded not guilty to charges of indecent assault,=20
assault and criminal injury. Police say the alleged abuse against six=20
teenage students and a fellow dormitory matron took place over four=20
months.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
On Monday, Makopo tried to hide her face in a maroon towel as she=
=20
entered the courthouse, but a policewoman yanked it away. Makopo then=20
pulled her jacket hood low over her eyes.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"I can't talk to a faceless person," Simpson said as she ordered=20
her to remove the hood.

MICHAEL MISICK CLOSE TO RESIGNING?: TMZ says sexual assault probe is=20
taking its toll on the husband of actress LisaRaye.

*TMZ.com is reporting that LisaRaye's husband Michael Misick is now=20
"seriously considering" stepping down from his post as the Premier of=20
Turks & Caicos in the wake sexual assault accusations and other probes,=20
political in nature.

According to the Web site, Misick's alleged victim is of Puerto Rican=20
descent and was over 18 at the time of the alleged assault. It was also=20
discovered that she may have known Misick before the incident.=20

There were initial rumors that the American woman was also a=20
celebrity, but those reports are not true, according to TMZ.

The FBI has reportedly landed on the island and launched an=20
investigation. Meanwhile, the police tell TMZ that Misick has been=20
"cooperative."

MICHAEL MOORE HAS HARSH WORDS FOR HILLARY: Filmmaker says she sounded=20
like a 'bigot' during last debate.

*Michael Moore has put Sen. Hillary Clinton on full blast for her=20
remarks during the controversial presidential debate last week on ABC.=20

The filmmaker, who won an Oscar for his anti-Bush documentary=20
"Fahrenheit 911," posted a message on his Web site accusing the New York=
=20
senator of using the race card to pit white voters against her=20
Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama.=20

During the early stages of the presidential campaign, Moore said he=20
didn't care who won the Democratic nomination, as long as the party=20
could go on to claim ultimate victory in November.=20

"Well, that sounded good last year, but over the past two months,=
=20
the actions and words of Hillary Clinton have gone from being merely=20
disappointing to downright disgusting," wrote Moore in his posting=20
Monday.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
He continued: "I guess the debate last week was the final straw.=20
I've watched Senator Clinton and her husband play this game of appealing=
=20
to the worst side of white people, but last Wednesday, when she hurled=20
the name "Farrakhan" out of nowhere, well that's when the silly season=20
came to an early end for me. She said the "F" word to scare white=20
people, pure and simple. Of course, Obama has no connection to=20
Farrakhan. But, according to Senator Clinton, Obama's pastor does -- AND=
=20
the "church bulletin" once included a Los Angeles Times op-ed from some=20
guy with Hamas! No, not the church bulletin!=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"This sleazy attempt to smear Obama was brilliantly explained the=
=20
following night by Stephen Colbert. He pointed out that if Obama is=20
supported by Ted Kennedy, who is Catholic, and the Catholic Church is=20
led by a Pope who was in the Hitler Youth, that can mean only one thing:=
=20
OBAMA LOVES HITLER!=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"Yes, Senator Clinton, that's how you sounded. Like you were=20
nuts.
Like you were a bigot stoking the fires of stupidity. How sad that I=20
would ever have to write those words about you. You have devoted your=20
life to good causes and good deeds. And now to throw it all away for an=20
office you can't win unless you smear the black man so much that the=20
superdelegates cry "Uncle (Tom)" and give it all to you.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"But that can't happen. You cast your die when you voted to start=
=20
this bloody war. When you did that you were like Moses who lost it for a=
=20
moment and, because of that, was prohibited from entering the Promised=20
Land."

RAY CHARLES' KIDS VS. HIS MANAGER: Family accuses Joe Adams of=20
mismanaging late legend's estate and trusts.

*Ray Charles' children are not happy with the way their father's=20
longtime manager Joe Adams is handling the late singer's affairs.

Several of Charles' 12 children are seeking a formal=20
investigation and audit of their father's estate, trusts and foundation=20
for possible wrongdoing by Adams, whom they accuse of mismanagement. The=
=20
children also claim Adams is ruining their father's legacy by releasing=20
two posthumous CDs that Charles never would have approved, according to=20
the Los Angeles Times.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"The biggest issue with me is disrespect for the family and=20
kids,"
said Robert Robinson, one of Charles' sons, according to the AP. "If you=
=20
respect a man and his work, then respect his kids. His blood is flowing=20
through our veins."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The children feel Adams holds too much power over Ray Charles=20
Enterprises and the Ray Charles Foundation and that he excludes them=20
from business dealings. They have complained to the California attorney=20
general, the Los Angeles County prosecutor's office and the FBI.

Charles' children hope to win control of the marketing of their=20
father's name and image, and a greater voice in foundation affairs.=20

EDDIE MURPHY IS 'SHRINKING': Actor to star in remake of 1957 sci-fi=20
classic.

*Eddie Murphy is attached to star in a remake of "The Incredible=20
Shrinking Man" for Universal Pictures, with "Rush Hour" director Brett=20
Ratner in negotiations to shoot, according to the Hollywood Reporter.=20=
=20

The updated version of the best-selling novel and classic 1957 film=20
will be presented as more of a comedy than its sci-fi predecessor. The=20
story follows a famous Las Vegas magician who searches for a way to=20
reverse a spell that has caused him to shrink.=20=20

The project previously had Keenen Ivory Wayans in the director's=20
chair.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Ratner is currently helming one of the short subjects in the "New=
=20
York, I Love You" anthology film. At Universal, he is also attached to=20
direct "Playboy," a project about Hugh Hefner.

SERENA WINS, BLAKE LOSES IN FAMILY CIRCLE FINALS: Williams gets first=20
clay court win in six years; Blake denied first clay victory of his=20
career.=20

*Serena Williams scored her first clay court victory since 2002 and=20
stretched her win streak to 15 matches by winning the $1.3 million WTA=20
Family Circle Cup final Sunday in Charleston, S.C.=20

On the men's side, James Blake was unable to close the deal,=20
losing a chance to win his first ever clay court tournament in a final=20
match with Spain's Marcel Granollers-Pujol.
=09
The fifth-seeded Williams sister served nine aces en route to=20
defeating Russia's Vera Zvonareva 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and earn her third=20
consecutive tournament crown, a victory that will lift her from ninth to=
=20
sixth in the WTA rankings.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"I'm feeling really good," Williams said. "I'm not even reaching=20
my peak yet. I feel like I can do so much better."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Meanwhile, top seed Blake rallied after dropping the first set but was=20
denied his first clay court title by Granollers-Pujol, the 84th-ranked=20
player in the world who was playing in his first ATP final. The 6-4,=20
1-6,
7-5 loss dropped eighth-ranked Blake to 35-35 lifetime on clay. He fell=20
short of his bid for an 11th ATP title and fell to 10-12 in ATP finals.
