WILL DOWNING TO 'MEET AND GREET' FOR LATEST DISC: Artist living happily=20
ever 'After.'
-- by Kenya M Yarbrough
*Smooth soulster Will Downing will be sharing some intimate moments=
=20
with fans very soon.=20
The singer, who has been battling back from the very debilitating=20
Polymyositis, completed his latest disc "After Tonight" last fall and=20
will be touring in support of the project and in support of health=20
education beginning this week.
"I had the good fortune of releasing a project every year and a=20
half to two years, and this was the first time I hadn't gone out and=20
supported the record," Downing said of not being able to immediately=20
promote his album himself. "It just felt odd. So I had to get out and=20
see the folks that have been supporting me over the years. That was=20
basically why I wanted to do these engagements, and at the same time=20
educate people in regard to health matters."
From April 22 through May 7, Downing will be doing intimate=20
meet-and-greets in Chicago (April 22); Detroit (April 24); Washington=20
(April 29); Baltimore (TBD) and Atlanta (May 7).=20
(Please note that Will Downing will NOT be performing on the above=
=20
mentioned stops.)
Proceeds from the dates will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy=20
Association. Downing will be talking with fans about muscular dystrophy,=
=20
as well as the near-catastrophic illness he himself has emerged from=20
called Polymyositis. The disease is a chronic muscle disease - an=20
inflammation of the muscle fibers - the cause of which is not known.
"Every day is a new day and I've been getting better and I'm=20
grateful to God for that," he said of working towards getting back to=20
100% of the person he wants to be.
Downing first started seeing symptoms of the muscle inflammatory=20
disease Polymyositis in November of 2006.=20=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"It's a muscle debilitating disease," Downing described.=20
"Technically what happens is your B cells look at you C cells and decide=
=20
they are going to attack them. It takes your muscles and reduces them to=
=20
nothing. Some people can't walk, and some people have had it to the=20
point that they couldn't breathe without the assistance of a respirator.=
=20
Basically it took my legs and my arms and so, I'm learning from=20
scratch."
Downing told EUR's Lee Bailey that he sees little successes every=20
week on his road to recovery. The singer takes medicines and has=20
physical therapy on a daily basis.
"You have to retrain your muscles to do everything that would=20
normally come naturally. Just like with a baby - you crawl before you=20
walk, you walk before you run. So here I am, a 45-year-old man in the=20
crawling stages, starting all over again."
Downing was in a wheel chair for a considerable amount of time,=20
but is now walking at what he calls a "nice pace."
"Who knows, in six months maybe I'll be running," he said.
Downing reflected that initially, he didn't feel that strong about=
=20
taking on the disease. He admitted that when he was diagnosed, he did=20
not deal with it well and even went through a serious bout with=20
depression.
"I went through 'Why me?' But I was very fortunate to have a very=20
strong family base, and they weren't going to let me be down. So,=20
between them and the progress on a daily basis, (it) kind of gives you=20
hope. And sometimes it starts from the littlest thing. From not being=20
able to wiggle your toe or move your finger to a couple of days later=20
you can move (your) finger and you're like, 'Alright, I'm coming back.'=20
and that's what carries you through."
In addition to his family and will power, working on the new disc=20
was also therapeutic.
"Three of the songs were recorded before I had taken ill. The rest=
=20
of them I had done during different times during my illness," Downing=20
said. "After spending three or four months in the hospital, I came home=20
and we recorded a little bit then and then I got sick again and I had to=
=20
go back into the hospital. And then I came out and we recorded some=20
more."
"I needed that." He added. "It really helped my sanity. What can=20
you do if you're lying there in bed, staring at the ceiling or they put=20
you in a wheelchair and you're watching TV or whatever. So I needed a=20
piece of what society viewed as normal."
Amazingly, Downing did the majority of the vocals for "After=20
Tonight," his 13th album, from a hospital bed and from a wheelchair.
"So we really 'Frankensteined' this thing together, but it's my=20
most heartfelt piece of work to date," he said. "Initially, I kind of=20
wanted to do a concept CD revolving around love and relationships, but=20
when the illness happened, we pieced the rest of the record together. It=
=20
was just songs that at that moment were extremely important."
Downing described that the disc is not only full of sensual=20
ballads, but it also features motivational tracks like the song "God is=20
So Amazing."
"Plus, it wasn't your traditional 'set-the-mic-up-in-room. So this=
=20
was a lot of emotion from every aspect. Not just from me as a performer=20
but also from a production standpoint."
Doctors are positive about Downing's recovery and have given him=20
the go-ahead to travel and get back to work.
"They think that I'm in a good space. I've been cleared to fly,=20
which is something I've been wanting to do and to get back to work on a=20
minimal basis," he said.=20
So with the five (meet and greet) tour dates, Downing will get to=20
do just that.
"People were really good to me while I was sick and so it's a way=20
for me to see them and say thank you."

website at www.willdowning.com. For more on how to help eradicate=20

HALLE BERRY BOOKS FIRST POST-NAHLA PROJECT: Actress signs on to star in=20
and produce psychological drama.
*The first film project Halle Berry has signed on for since the=20
March birth of her daughter Nahla is the psychological drama "Frankie=20
and Alice," which follows a woman who has been diagnosed with multiple=20
personality disorder.
If that isn't challenging enough, one of the character's alter=20
egos is described as a racist Caucasian, according to Daily Variety.
Berry is also producing the pic with Access Motion Pictures in=20
association with Reality Pictures in Motion. A production date and cast=20
has yet to be announced.
Berry has several other films in the pipeline, including the=20
romantic comedy "Nappily Ever After," for which Berry has proclaimed she=
=20
will shave her head in real time. She is also due to star opposite her=20
"Monster's Ball" partner Billy Bob Thornton in "Tulia." The John=20
Singleton-directed drama was set to roll late last year but was=20
postponed due to Berry's pregnancy.
"Frankie and Alice," will be the second independent production=20
for Toronto-based Access Motion Pictures, which recently completed=20
"Phantom Punch," a Sonny Liston biopic starring Ving Rhames and directed=
=20
by Robert Townsend.
FOXY BROWN IS A FREE WOMAN: Rapper greeted Friday by family and friends=20
outside Rikers Island.
*In the first few hours of freedom for Foxy Brown Friday, the=20
rapper reportedly went on a shopping spree in Harlem, ate some soul food=
=20
and stopped by her childhood home in Brooklyn's Prospect Heights.
It was all captured by cameras for an upcoming VH1 reality show=20
that will chronicle her adjustment to civilian life after serving eight=20
months of a one-year sentence at New York's Rikers' Island prison,=20
including 40 days in solitary confinement.
The 29-year-old artist, whose real name is Inga Marchand, was=20
sentenced in September 2007 for violating the terms of her probation=20
after she was accused of hitting a woman with a cell phone. At the time,=
=20
she was on three years' probation for an August 2004 attack on two=20
manicurists at a Manhattan nail salon. She pleaded guilty to misdemeanor=
=20
assault in the 2004 incident.
Foxy has always thought her sentence extra harsh because she is a=20
celebrity.
"I did almost a year in prison, a year in prison, just because my=20
name is Foxy Brown," she said, according to the Associated Press.
Inmates typically serve two-thirds of their sentence, according to=
=20
rep for the Department of Corrections. Brown had been released and=20
escorted from the Rikers Island prison by New York City Councilman=20
Charles Barron, an unusual move as inmates are usually taken from prison=
=20
on a public bus and delivered to a city parking lot. But as a public=20
official, Barron had access to prison and had requested to pick up the=20
rap star.
Police were on hand as the MC - dressed in a brown leather jacket,=
=20
gold cross, blue jeans, and a brown Fendi head scarf - walked out of the=
=20
prison and toward a caravan of vehicles, including a chauffeured white=20
Rolls-Royce Phantom.
Along the way, she stopped to hug and take pictures with scores of=
=20
fans and well-wishers who had showed up in support of her release. She=20
was driven off with a fleet of security vehicles and paparazzi on her=20
tail.
As previously reported, Foxy Brown will spend the next few weeks=20
promoting the May 13 release of her album "Brooklyn's Don Diva." Her=20
manager, Chaz Williams, told Billboard that his client is eager and=20
ready "to get on top of her career again. She's ready to hit the ground=20
running and do anything she needs to do to get her career back on=20
point."

50 CENT NO LONGER AN ALICIA KEYS FAN: Rapper upset over her recent=20
comments about gangsta rap.
*Despite repeated explanations that her recent comments about=20
gangsta rap were taken out of context, Alicia Keys has been criticized=20
and dismissed by self-proclaimed gangsta rapper 50 Cent.
In an interview with Blender magazine, Keys was quoted as saying,=
=20
"Gangsta rap was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other."=20
The Grammy-winner has since released a statement claiming her words were=
=20
"misrepresented."
"The point that I was trying to make was that the term was=20
over-sloganized by some of the media causing reactions that were not=20
always positive," Keys said in her statement. "Many of the 'gangsta rap'=
=20
lyrics articulate the problems of the artists' experiences and I think=20
all of us, including our leaders, could be doing more to address these=20
problems including drugs, gang violence, crime, and other related social=
=20
issues."
50 Cent isn't buying her clarification, telling the media outlet=20
Showbuzz that in his eyes, she is now in the same category as Oprah=20
Winfrey, an outspoken critic of gangsta rap.
"I don't like people who don't like me ... that statement changes=20
my perception of Alicia Keys totally. It's just not really a bright=20
comment," said 50.
KRS ONE HIT BY FLYING BOTTLE AT PEACE CONCERT: Rapper rushed to hospital=
=20
with fractured hand.
*Things got a little violent at a " Stop the Violence" concert=20
featuring KRS-One recently when someone in the crowd threw a bottle on=20
stage, hitting the rapper in the face and hand, reports Allhiphop.com.
The rap legend was performing at a nightclub in New Haven, CT=20
when a concert-goer became upset with security staff who had escorted=20
him off stage and tossed the bottle in reaction.
KRS-One kept a level head, telling the crowd at Toad's Place=20
nightclub: "Let it go. Let it go. When negativity comes your way, let it=
=20
go. =85Let this be an example as to how we stop the violence."
After his right hand swelled up and became painful during the last=
=20
15 minutes of his set, the rapper was rushed by ambulance to Yale-New=20
Haven hospital and treated for a fractured hand and dehydration.=20=20
Doctors urged the artist to postpone all previously scheduled=20
appearances until he recovers from both ailments.
The old school rapper has requested that the fan not be charged=20
for the assault. However, KRS-One's management team and the staff of the=
=20
nightclub advised him to have the fan arrested for legal purposes=20
related to the postponements.

KESHIA KNIGHT PULLIAM TO PLAY A HOOKER: Tyler Perry casts the Cosby kid=20
in his upcoming film 'Madea Goes to Jail.'
*Actress Keshia Knight Pulliam, best known as little Rudy=20
Huxtable from the sitcom "The Cosby Show," will play an imprisoned=20
prostitute in the upcoming film "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail."
Lionsgate's big-screen adaptation of Perry's popular stage play=20
will also star Derek Luke and is due to begin filming next month in=20
Atlanta for an early 2009 release.
The 29-year-old Spelman College grad will play Candy, a prisoner=20
who comes to learn valuable life lessons from new inmate Madea, the=20
gun-toting grandma played by Perry himself. Madea arrives on Candy's=20
cell block after her arrest for stealing gas and leading police on a=20
freeway chase. During her incarceration, Candy convinces Madea to take=20
custody of her wayward daughter Toni once she is set free. Luke will=20
play an attorney who has a past with Candy.
Pulliam recently appeared in Perry's TBS series "House of Payne"=20
and is launching an Atlanta-based production company for film and=20
television projects that she has in development.
'SOUL TRAIN: THE MOVIE' ON TRACK AT WARNER BROS: =85And it's not a=20
documentary.
*"Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius says he has teamed with=20
Warner Bros. Pictures to develop "Soul Train: The Movie," described as a=
=20
buddy comedy that revolves around two men who dance on the show.
Cornelius tells Reuters that the characters get into "a lot of=20
good stuff and some bad stuff as well." It features "lots of music, lots=
=20
of comedy," he added, as well as "a little bit of violence." He also=20
promised it would be "more than slightly sensual."
"'Soul Train' has always been about sexuality," Cornelius said.=20
"It's almost never been about guys, and almost always about girls. It's=20
what has kept us afloat for these three decades or so."
Cornelius will serve as producer along with Darryl Porter, the=20
executive producer of the Hughes brothers' 1995 drama "Dead Presidents."=
=20
The project has yet to name a director or cast, Reuters reports, but=20
Cornelius has made it clear that he will not appear in the film. A first=
=20
draft of the script is being written by rookie scribe J. Gil Williams,=20
and is due to be turned in next month.
A former Chicago radio DJ who hosted "Soul Train" for its first 22=
=20
years, Cornelius said he had long planned to make a movie, but was=20
either busy running the syndicated TV show, or had difficulty getting=20
all the elements together at the same time.
He was able to devote more time to the effort after "Soul Train"=20
ended its historic run in 2006. Cornelius said "Soul Train" and the show=
=20
that inspired it, Dick Clark's "American Bandstand," together ran for=20
about 70 years, and it was time to rest the simple -- but lucrative --=20
format of kids in a TV studio dancing to music. He is developing some=20
new "Soul Train"
programming concepts for television, but declined to get into specifics,=
=20
according to Reuters.
As for his recent announcement that the "22nd annual Soul Train=20
Music Awards" would be cancelled this year, Cornelius said it was a=20
necessary move due to the uncertainty caused by the Hollywood writers=20
strike. The ceremony, which usually takes place in March, must line up=20
top stars to receive honorary awards well in advance, and planning=20
became impossible once the writers began their 100-day walkout last=20
November.

BET, MTV ASSAULT KIDS ONCE EVERY 38 SECONDS: New study says adult=20
content between the two channels runs rampant.
*A new study of daytime music video programming on BET and MTV=20
found that teen viewers are bombarded with sexual, violent, profane or=20
obscene images once every 38 seconds.
"What BET and MTV are offering to children on these three programs=
=20
is full of offensive and vulgar content, the likes of which cannot yet=20
be found on broadcast television," said Tim Winter. President of the=20
Parents Television Council, who conducted the study in partnership with=20
the Enough is Enough Campaign.
In the study, PTC analyzed the adult content airing during=20
afternoon or early evening hours on BET's "Rap City" and "106 & Park"=20
and on MTV's "Sucker Free" for a two-week period in December 2007. The=20
shows were chosen for their daily new and recent video releases.=20
Because the research data from the December content contained a=20
strikingly high volume and degree of adult-themed material, the PTC=20
conducted an additional week of analysis on the same three programs in=20
March 2008 for purposes of validation. The data revealed even higher=20
levels of adult content in March 2008 than in December 2007.
"BET and MTV are assaulting children with content that is full of=20
sexually charged images, explicit language, portrayals of violence, drug=
=20
use, drug sales and other illegal activity," said Winter. "Not only=20
that, but we discovered that some offensive words aired only in muted=20
form in December 2007, but as recent as March 2008, these same words=20
were not muted.
"Excluding one program on BET, neither BET nor MTV carried content=
=20
descriptors that would work in conjunction with the V-Chip to block the=20
programs from coming into the home or to warn parents about the presence=
=20
of sexual content, suggestive dialogue, violence, or foul language.=20=20
This is a major problem for parents who are told repeatedly to rely on=20
their V-chips to protect their children," said Winter.

FLORIDA WOMAN STEALS $40,000 FROM BETHUNE-COOKMAN: Plus, USC gets $25M=20
from African American widow.
*Around the same time that a record-setting donation was given to=20
the University of Southern California by an African American widow, a=20
Florida woman was discovered to have stolen $40,000 from her former job=20
at HBCU Bethune-Cookman University.
USC will receive $25 million from Verna Dauterive, a retired Los=20
Angeles schoolteacher and principal who pledged the money in the name of=
=20
her late husband, Peter, a prominent Los Angeles businessman. He was a=20
USC business grad who became president of a savings and loan that sold=20
mortgages in inner-city Los Angeles.
The private school in Los Angeles says it's the largest gift ever=20
made by an African-American to an American university. Dauterive, a USC=20
alumnus, says the donation is a way of thanking the school for its=20
dedication to diversity and global outreach.=20
Meanwhile, a City Hall employee in Daytona Beach was arrested at=20
her job Friday, accused by police of depositing $40,000 in checks, meant=
=20
for Bethune-Cookman students, into a bank account that belonged to her.
Elgena Wallace, 32, of Port Orange, was an accounting division=20
employee when she worked at the Bethune-Cookman. She was charged with=20
organizing a scheme to defraud and is being held on $20,000 bail, police=
=20
said.
This is the second recent fraud incident at the university. In=20
February, longtime Bethune-Cookman University employee Sheila Davis=20
Jackson was sentenced to 10 years' probation after she pleaded no=20
contest to a grand theft charge.
Jackson, 55, a former finance advisor, agreed to pay $40,640 in=20
restitution that prosecutors said was taken from a program that pays=20
student educational expenses for work they do at the school.
