Practical Uses for Google StreetView

One of the most read blog posts this week references an InformationWeek article titled How To Put Google StreetView To Practical Use. The five suggestions are certainly ones you've likely thought of, including: zeroing in on signage to dispute a parking ticket, viewing restaurants on a street to remember the name of one of interest, enhancing driving directions ("when you see this, turn right"...). Why might readers be so interested in the topic? Because they think StreetView is a toy and this may show them otherwise? Because they want to get the most out of this free geographic dataset? Because they want to see how others are leveraging geodata? Adena Schutzberg's question regarding SteetView still stands: How will Google monetize it?

off the beaten path

Richard Florida's new book, Who's Your City, was published about a month ago and focuses on the concept that your decision about where to live is as important - or perhaps more important - than any other key decision you will make in your life. Here's an excerpt from the book: "In fact, place exerts powerful influence over the jobs and careers we have access to, the people meet and our 'mating markets' and our ability to lead happy and fulfilled lives."

Florida's book is full of maps, many of which can be viewed on his website. Here's an example that illustrates an important 'mating market' issue - relative number of single men to women. Blue circles indicate more single men, red circles indicate more single women. You can quickly see which side of the country you should be on if you are in the mating market. Click for larger view.
