Mr. Keillor -
Our company down here in East Texas recently hired a nice young lady from North Dakota who recently graduated from college. She often uses the term "Holy Buckets" in conversation. She seems to use this phrase when trying to express surprise at an interesting or alarming fact or comment made by the
person with whom she is conversing. Can you explain the origin and meaning of this phrase? We are not sure if it is a mild profanity or a religious exclamation.
Ryan T.
Tyler, TX
I haven't heard Holy Buckets in years and I wonder if the young lady might come from a linguistic pocket in North Dakota where this and perhaps other archaic expressions linger on—Jeepers Creeper, Glorioso, Leaping Lizards, etc. Probably she had a beloved old grandpa who used the phrase
and the child picked it up. The phrase originally referred to a sudden downpour—raining "buckets" —which, to most people, represents good luck, and so it's not a profanity—it's an expression of surprise at a (possibly) good thing. So I'd imagine the young lady finds it exciting to
be in your company.

Listened to the show Saturday and it was not bad. I was busy wrapping gifts for my mother as her birthday is this week and I'd made plans to have lunch with her Sunday. The kids were outside playing Kick the Can while the snowstorm snow melted away and Mr. Sundberg was out on the deck setting up
the telescope he ordered from his nature magazine. He says it's for the kids but he's been talking about it nonstop since he placed the order...

For some people, the urge to compete is very, very strong, such as the tall red-haired woman last Sunday morning at LaGuardia who cut in front of me at the boarding gate and did it so smoothly, expertly, no body contact, you have to assume she's been acing people out all her life…

Pontoon: A Novel of Lake Wobegon |
In Lake Wobegon lives a good Lutheran lady who is quite prepared
to die and wishes to be cremated and her ashes placed inside a bowling ball and dropped into the lake, no prayers, no hymns, thank you very much. Meanwhile, the Detmer girl returns from California where she has made a killing in veterinary aromatherapy to marry her boyfriend Brent aboard Wally's
pontoon boat, presided over by her minister, Misty Naylor of the Sisterhood of the Sacred Spirit. Brent arrives on Thursday. On Saturday, a delegation of renegade Lutheran pastors from Denmark come to town on their tour of America, their punishment for having denied the divinity of Jesus. And
Barbara Peterson, whose mother, Evelyn, left the startling note about cremation and the bowling ball, is in love with a lovely fat man who slips around town in the dim light and reconnoiters with her at the Romeo Motel.

Legendary director Robert Altman's take on Garrison Keillor's show

(Don't worry; it's only a movie.)
"What a lovely film this is, so gentle and whimsical, so simple and profound" Roger Ebert.
"A great gang of stars having a great time, brilliantly directed by Robert Altman" Larry King. 1 hour 45 min.
