STACKABLE PCIe STANDARDS WAR ERUPTS!
Two competing standards for PCIe-enabled stackable interconnects were
unveiled at ESC. The PC/104 Consortium's three-connector, 156-pin
"PCI/104 Express" features a x16 ("by 16") ***. Meanwhile, the
fledgling Small Form Factor SIG (special interest group) is promoting a
104-pin SUMIT interface that tops out at x4, but scales to smaller boards.

ECLIPSE ADDS EMBEDDED DEVICE PROJECTS
The open-source Eclipse Foundation announced a pair of new initiatives
in the top-level Device Software Development Project (DSDP). It also
announced significant milestones in two other DSDP projects.

VENDORS LINE UP BEHIND DUAL-CORE POWERPC FPGA
Xilinx unveiled version 10.1 of its Embedded Development Kit (EDK) in
support of its new high-end Virtex-5 FXT field-programmable gate array
(FPGA). Meanwhile, software vendors supporting the EDK and the dual-core
PowerPC-based FPGA include MontaVista, Wind River, LynuxWorks, Timesys,
Avnet, Green Hills Software, and Lauterbach.

EMBEDDED POWERPC DEV KITS COME WITH LINUX
AMCC is shipping Linux-based evaluation kits for its Power Architecture
460EX and 460GT system-on-chips (SoCs). The "Canyonlands" board
for the general-purpose 460EX and the "Glacier" board
for the wireless-oriented 460GT come with development tools, sample
applications, benchmarks, and design files, and are supported by
MontaVista's Linux and tools.

NEP ACHIEVES CGL 4.0 REGISTRATION
Network equipment provider (NEP) Performance Technologies (PT) announced
that its NexusWare Linux distribution meets the Carrier Grade Linux
(CGL) 4.0 requirements specified by the Linux Foundation (LF). PT is the
third vendor after Wind River and MontaVista to register CGL 4.0 compliance.

MICROTCA SERVER BOASTS SIX AMC SLOTS
Network equipment provider (NEP) Performance Technologies (PT) announced
the first of a line of Linux-based MicroTCA-based network appliances.
The 1U MTC5070's chassis integrates commodity PC power supplies and
shelf management functions, leaving six AMC slots free for user
configuration.

ULTRASPARC T2 GAINS CGL SUPPORT
Wind River announced that it will port its Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) and
Workbench development suite to Sun's multicore UltraSPARC T2. Wind River
Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition, will be the first
carrier-grade Linux implementation for Sun's chip multithreading (CMT)
processors, says Wind River.

POWERPC GAINS EMBEDDED VIRTUALIZATION
VirtualLogix announced that its VLX virtualization software will be
available for Power Architecture processors. VLX for Network
Infrastructure (VLX-NI) will now enable PowerPC processors to
simultaneously run multiple operating systems -- typically Linux and a
real-time OS (RTOS) -- for performance-critical telecom and datacom
applications.

LOW-COST LINUX-BASED NAS DEVICE SUPPORTS RAID 1
D-Link is shipping a two-bay, RAID 1-enabled networked attached storage
(NAS) device that runs embedded Linux. Based on an ARM9 "Orion"
processor from Marvell, the DNS-323 offers RAID mirroring, UPnP support,
and remote access via a built-in FTP server, says D-Link.

MOBILE FIREFOX GETS SPEEDUP, DESIGN TWEAKS
The Mozilla Foundation says the mobile version of Firefox, planned for
release later this year, has been sped up nearly 600 percent in its
latest builds. The evolving product, which will run on Linux-based
devices, has also received several interesting new user interface (UI)
proposals.

DUAL-CORE SOC INCLUDES LINUX STARTER KIT
Freescale Semiconductor announced a dual-core, PowerPC-based
system-on-chip (SoC) aimed at in-car navigation and other embedded
applications. The low-power MPC5123 combines a 400MHz e300 PowerPC core
with a 200MHz multimedia coprocessor, and ships with Freescale's
"mobileGT" Linux development environment.

SUPERH SOC TARGETS MULTIMEDIA-ENHANCED NAVIGATION
Renesas says it is now shipping a new system-on-chip (SoC) for car
navigation systems and PNDs (personal navigation devices). The
SH-MobileR2 SH7723 incorporates a 400MHz SH-4A CPU core, 256KB secondary
cache, H.264 codec, 2D graphics accelerator, USB 2.0 support, plus SD
and ATAPI controllers, says Renesas.

SOC FOR STBs HAS TRIPLE PROCESSORS
Sigma Designs has introduced a pair of set-top box SoCs that run Linux.
Powered by three MIPS cores apiece, the SMP8654 and SMP8655 boast
accelerated graphics and compliance with HDMI (high-defintion multimedia
interface) 1.3, says Sigma.

VIA ANNOUNCES COM EXPRESS MODULES
The COM Express computer-on-module specification has gained a
high-profile advocate, as Via announced it will begin producing its own
products compatible with the format. The Eden- and C7-based modules will
target "larger OEMs only" in gaming, healthcare, and industrial
automation, says Via.
