IT'S A 'GO' FOR MARIO: He sings, he dances, he gives back.
-- by Kenya M Yarbrough

*Young R&B crooner Mario is burning up the dance floor as one of=20
the faves on this season of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars," but shaking=20
his Latin groove thing on the hit show isn't the only thing keeping him=20
busy.=20

The singer has also released a new disc titled "Go" and has=20
launched his own foundation for kids.=20

With just a few hours to spare from his own personal projects,=20
Mario has become a standout of the popular celebrity dance competition.=20
But he told EUR's Lee Bailey that he initially passed on the opportunity=
=20
to star on the show.

"I originally said no," he said of the offer to be a "Dancing"=20
dynamo. "I thought, 'Nobody my age does this show. My demographics don't=
=20
really watch the show.' But at the same time I thought it would be a=20
great opportunity for my fans to see another side of me, and a great=20
platform for me to show the world who I am."

Mario explained that he feels he's much more than just a music=20
artist.=20

"I'm a philanthropist; I'm a role model and I felt that's=20
important and this was a great way to show that," he said. "It's been=20
going great. This has been the greatest experience I've ever had."

Some say that because Mario clearly has some good R&B rhythm in his=
=20
hit videos, it couldn't be that difficult for him to be such a superstar=
=20
on the show. But he modestly explained that this is hardly a=20
choreographed vid clip for BET.

"It's totally different," he said. "I've never had any dance=20
experience. That's something I've acquired from being an entertainer. I=20
didn't have any expectations, but I knew that I had to work hard so that=
=20
to make sure I didn't I want to let my family and friends down, and let=20
my fans down, and ultimately let myself down. I went into it with an=20
open mind, hoping that me and my partner had a good chemistry - which we=
=20
do."

After remaining in the lineup into the fifth week, Mario is doing=20
pretty well. And as for the chemistry between him and his partner,=20
professional dancer Karina Smirnoff, well rumors were flying that the=20
dancing duo are heating up on and off the dance floor.=20

However, Mario squelched the rumors, saying, "We're not dating.=20
It's totally a professional relationship. We just go out there trying to=
=20
give a great performance every week."

He explained that part of the dance is "selling whatever the=20
character of the dance is." Apparently the character of his first week=20
performance was rather flirty.

"So maybe people thought there was something going on," he said.=20
"It's a compliment - it means we were doing our job."

In addition to seeing the star dance, Mario is planning to=20
perform as a singer on the show, too. But that will come at a cost.=20
Either once eliminated or once the show is over, he is will sing, so=20
there's no big rush.

And even when the show's over, Mario will still be dancing. He'll=20
have a new partner, though. He announced the launch of the interactive=20
"Dancing with Mario" contest giving fans a chance to have Mario appear=20
in their hometown for an in-person dance date.

Fans can enter the contest by telling Mario why they should be the=
=20
one to have a private dance with the star by directly sending Mario a=20
personal message at 818.836.8041 or uploading a video on his website=20
www.mario2u.com/dancecontest.

Still, in the midst of dodging rumors and elimination, and=20
attempting to master the tango, Mario's released his new album, "Go,"=20
which features production by The Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri, Jimmy Jam &=20
Terry Lewis, Scott Storch, Akon, and Alicia Keys to name a few. And the=20
album title, "Go" is pretty much the feel of the disc. Mario described=20
it as "a progressive title," which matches how he's moving forward in=20
his life.

"The whole project is amazing," he said. "The energy behind it is=20
great. It's a great solid R&B album."

In addition to promoting the album, being in the studio, and=20
shooting videos for the disc, Mario has also recently began work on his=20
foundation, Mario's Do Right Foundation.

The Do Right Foundation caters to kids whose parents have suffered=
=20
with substance abuse issues. About two years ago, Mario had to take a=20
break to help save his mother from a serious drug addiction. He shared=20
that her battle really affected him, but that he's become a better man=20
from the experience.

"I've humbled myself because I've seen how God can work and how he=
=20
can heal. I'm blessed because at 21 I can see that," he said. "Mom is=20
good. She's about eight months clean."

"We're helping to give these kids the power and the tools to rise=20
above those circumstances," he said of the foundation. "We just started=20
it, but it's my way of giving back. With being successful and having=20
opportunities, there's a certain amount of blessing that you should=20
bestow on other people through your gift from God. This is definitely=20
one of those for me."

TAVIS AVOIDS TALK OF OBAMA BACKLASH ON 'JOYNER': He does take time to=20
praise host and listeners before outlining future projects.=20

*Tavis Smiley appeared in his regular twice-a-week slot on the=20
Tom Joyner Morning Show Tuesday and avoided any mention of the dust-up=20
sparked by the host's open letter questioning his reason for leaving at=20
the end of June.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Smiley reiterated that his departure would clear more time to=20
develop future projects under his Tavis Smiley Group. Joyner had=20
alleged in an open letter that Smiley was really leaving because of=20
massive fan backlash surrounding his guarded stance on Barack Obama.=20
Smiley alluded to the notion briefly, but neither confirmed nor denied=20
the accusation.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"I realized a long time ago that you're never rewarded for=20
virtue, so, I've just tried to tell the truth as I see it, even when you=
=20
didn't agree. I can almost guarantee that between now and the end of=20
June, you're going to fall out with me again," he said while expressing=20
his appreciation for Joyner's listeners. "That said, I always prefer=20
light, but you better believe that I can take the heat."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Smiley began his address by saying he was "shocked" that Joyner=20
decided to announce his June departure on Friday. He stated: "I had no=20
idea that my dear friend Tom Joyner was going to share with you Friday=20
morning what we had just discussed barely 12 hours earlier Thursday=20
evening. But I have accepted Tom's apology and that is for me, now, old=20
business."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Smiley went on to express his profound gratitude for Joyner, who=20
allowed him the opportunity 12 years ago to deliver his social and=20
political commentary to a national audience.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"On the real, I'd take a bullet for Tom Joyner," said Smiley.=20
"Not in my heart, maybe in my arm =85my left arm=85 maybe in my leg! Not in=
=20
my heart, but I would take a bullet for Tom Joyner. I love this=20
brother."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The remainder of Smiley's words focused on the various projects=20
he intends to develop with his extra time.

"We are in the process now of doing not one, not two, but three=20
documentaries," Smiley said. "One directed by the Academy Award winner=20
Jonathan Demme. =85Another documentary, already in development, takes a=20
microscopic look, a no-holds barred look, at what happens in our=20
communities when the few hospitals that are serving our people close=20
down. It's starting to happen all across the country.

"We're also working on America I Am: The African American Imprint=
=20
on America. We talked about this at the State of the Black Union, but=20
this is the biggest, baddest, boldest, black exhibit ever created.=20
Imagine, 15,000 square feet. It's a massive exhibit that tells the story=
=20
of our imprint on America."
=20
He said his book imprint, Smiley Books, would publish Professor=20
Cornel West's next work, "Hope on a Tightrope," as well as one by author=
=20
and life coach Iyanla Vanzant and the third volume in his "Covenant With=
=20
Black America" series, "Making the Covenant Real."=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
In closing, Smiley expressed a commitment to help Joyner find his=
=20
replacement "through an exciting process which Tom and I will roll out=20
for you just a little bit later. A process that you, the listener, will=20
be involved in to help select my successor."

DID LALA REFUSE TO PICK UP MELO AFTER DUI?: Also, cops are being=20
investigated for giving NBA star preferential treatment.

*Carmelo Anthony may be in more hot water with his fianc=E9e LaLa=20
Vasquez than with Denver authorities following his arrest Monday morning=
=20
for suspicion of DUI.=20=20

According to local news affiliate KWGN, the MTV VJ refused to pick=
=20
him up at the hospital where he was taking blood tests as part of his=20
DUI arrest.=20=20=20=20

No so, says LaLa. Here's what she told People Magazine:

"I want to make sure the public understands that I fully support=20
my fianc=E9, Carmelo Anthony, and stand by him through this ordeal. I will=
=20
always have his back and never refused to pick him up from the police=20
station. In fact, they offered to bring him to me."

Also, the Denver Police Department has launched an investigation=20
into whether several of its officers gave preferential treatment to the=20
Denver Nugget during his arrest.=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20

Denver law mandates that DUI offenders are either taken to Detox=20
or released to a sober, responsible party. After the arrest, Anthony was=
=20
handcuffed and taken to Denver Health Medical Center where he submitted=20
to a blood test. Police called Anthony's fianc=E9e to pick him up - but=20
LaLa refused to come get him, leaving police with only one choice --=20
take Anthony to Detox.=20

But that didn't happen. Instead, the sergeant who responded=20
personally took Anthony in his police car to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in=20
downtown Denver, were Anthony and LaLa were staying.

Also, police are supposed to tow the cars of DUI offenders to=20
either an impound yard or a "safe, neutral location." But in Melo's=20
case, his $130,000 silver Mercedes was driven personally by a cop to a=20
police parking lot where it had the least chance of being vandalized.=20=
=20=20=20
=20=20=20

Denver Police say they stand by their decisions even though some=20
believe Anthony may have received special treatment. Spokesperson Sonny=20
Jackson defended the officers' actions, stating: "Perceptions are=20
everything, and I understand that. People perceive a lot of things.=20
Ultimately, I'd rather answer questions about perceptions than why a car=
=20
got vandalized."=20=20=20=20=20=20=20

Anthony, meanwhile, awaits his blood test results to determine if=
=20
he will, in fact, be charged with DUI.

PROSECUTORS WANT SNIPES IN JAIL FOR 3 YEARS: U.S. recommends 36 month=20
sentence and $5 million fine in tax case.

*U.S. prosecutors have recommended that Wesley Snipes serve a=20
maximum three-year prison sentence and pay a $5 million fine for failing=
=20
to file his income taxes, according to a tax-season court filing.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
U.S. Attorney Robert O'Neill of Florida says his goal is to deter=
=20
other potential tax dodgers by making an example of Snipes, who after=20
years of "brazen defiance" of U.S. tax laws cheated the government of=20
$41 million.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"This case cries out for the statutory maximum term of=20
imprisonment, as well as a substantial fine, because of the seriousness=20
of defendant Snipes' crimes and because of the singular opportunity this=
=20
case presents to deter tax crime nationwide," O'Neill wrote.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Snipes was convicted in February on three misdemeanor counts of=20
willfully failing to file federal tax returns for 1999-2001. Each count=20
comes with a maximum sentence of one year.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The actor was acquitted on two felony charges of filing false=20
claims and fraud in seeking millions of dollars of refunds in other tax=20
years.

WHY WAS SNOOP DOGG AT THE CMT AWARDS?: Rapper roams around backstage and=
=20
ends up falling for LeAnn Rimes.

*Photos of Snoop Dogg walking around backstage at the Country Music=20
Television Awards in a black cowboy hat and duster jacket flooded the=20
Internet yesterday, leaving fans wondering what exactly was he doing=20
there.

"I actually did a country song on my new album called 'My Medicine'
that was inspired by Johnny Cash," Snoop told People magazine at the=20
event Monday night. "[Country music] inspires me and it makes me feel so=
=20
good hearing it, so I really wanted to come and be a part of this=20
heritage."=20

Snoop was reportedly in high demand backstage. The night's big winner,=20
Taylor Swift, grabbed him for photos, saying "I'm a huge fan!"
reports People. Another Snoop admirer, country star Jason Aldean, got=20
into a conversation with the MC about cowboy boots.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"Snoop said he liked my boots with the square toe and then he=20
said I was a pimp," boasted Aldean. "That's got to be the ultimate=20
compliment, when Snoop calls you a pimp."=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
It also appears that Snoop was hoping to have a "sensual=20
seduction" with country star LeAnn Rimes, who was posing for pictures=20
backstage when the rapper happened to spot her.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"Wow - damn! Who is that?" he asked a reporter, according to=20
People.Upon learning her identity, Snoop gushed, "She is beautiful! Wow,=
=20
wow, wow." He then turned to the 25-year-old singer and asked, "Can I=20
meet you?" (She responded, "Nice to meet you, sir.") Before leaving her=
=20
presence, he said: "You look like Marilyn Monroe!"=20

LeAnn's reaction: "Snoop is really a gentleman and I loved meeting him.=
=20
He made me feel like the most beautiful woman there with all of his=20
flattering comments. You never know, there could be a Snoop and LeAnn=20
duet sometime soon! I never rule anything out!"

COSBY'S RAP ALBUM DUE NEXT MONTH: 'State of Emergency' features his=20
points of view over hip-hop, pop and jazz beats.

*Bill Cosby officially enters the rap game next month with the=20
release of his long-promised album "Cosby Narratives Vol. 1: State of=20
Emergency."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
According to the Associated Press, the 70-year-old outspoken=20
opponent of profanity-laced, misogynistic rap has put together an effort=
=20
that blends his concepts and stories with a hip-hop, pop and jazz=20
soundtrack.
=20
His album is "the opposite of what I think is the profanity for=20
no particular reason, the misogyny for no particular reason," he told=20
the Associated Press. "It really looks at the frustration and the anger=20
that a young man may have."

Assembled by Cosby's longtime musical collaborator Bill=20
"Spaceman" Patterson, "Narratives" contains rhymes that are provided=20
solely by guest rappers.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"I do not rap on any of these things. I wouldn't know how to fix=20
my mouth to say some of the words," Cosby said.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The subject matter? "The value of an education. The value of=20
respecting one's self and ... giving (listeners) a chance to raise their=
=20
self-esteem and confidence," he said.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Cosby made the album as a companion to his 2007 best-selling=20
book, "Come on, People: On the Path from Victims to Victors." And though=
=20
he doesn't expect the CD to be a huge hit, it won't be his last hip-hop=20
venture.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"We can do even better," he said. "The next one will be even more=
=20
cheerleading."=20

GARY DOURDAN OPTS OUT OF 'CSI' CONTRACT: Actor chooses not to renew;=20
final bow for Warrick Brown is likely May 15 finale.

*The sun has set on "CSI's" Warrick Brown. The character, played=20
by departing actor Gary Dourdan, will likely appear for the last time on=
=20
the show's May15th finale.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
According to TV Guide, Dourdan has informed producers that he=20
will not renew his contract for a ninth season. No timetable for his=20
exit has been announced, but his contract is set to expire next month
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
CBS, meanwhile refuses to discuss the situation. A network rep=20
told E! News: "We can't confirm or deny this information."=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
According to TV Guide, producers are already looking to replace=20
Dourdan. A recent casting notice sought a male in his late 20s to early=20
30s to take on the role of Ray Santoro, a "handsome, smart and athletic"=
=20
CSI who works the graveyard shift at the crime lab.

ALICIA KEYS EXPLAINS 'CONSPIRACY' REMARKS: Singer tells Ryan Seacrest=20
her gangsta rap theories were 'misinterpreted.'

*During an appearance on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show Tuesday,=20
Alicia Keys clarified her headline-making remarks about gangster rap=20
that appears in the latest issue of Blender magazine.

The 27-year-old described the sub-genre as a government conspiracy=20
designed to "convince black people to kill each other." She also=20
suggested that the government and media were responsible for building=20
animosity between slain rappers Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. Keys=20
told Seacrest that those comments were "misinterpreted."=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"The term 'gangsta rap' was so over-sloganized during that time,"=
=20
she said, "and in so many ways everyday people as well as the government=
=20
could have really done so much more to obliterate and eradicate the=20
things that were going on in the community at that time that forced the=20
artists to discuss and talk so strongly what they saw- what they lived=20
with every day."
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Keys also addressed her comment that the East/West rivalry in hip=
=20
hop was fueled "by the government and the media to stop another great=20
black leader from existing."=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
"It was just an over-sensationalized situation," she told=20
Seacrest. "We don't know who killed Biggie and Pac. But I do feel like=20
had more communication been done between the two men, that result would=20
have not happened."=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Calling the attention surrounding her remarks "disappointing,"=20
Keys added, "All the things that I try to do to inspire people and it=20
rarely gets nearly this much attention."=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20
When contacted by EUR to respond to Alicia's explanation,=20
Blender's rep stated flatly that they stand by their story.
