Scared Scriptless unwinds audience
Jason Martin's entire forearm, heaved from his lap, smacked the table at Moose's Tooth Pub and Pizzeria with an obnoxious thud, patently irritating the neighboring patrons. But everyone at his table was laughing too hard to notice or care - Jason's mime of his hypothetically massive penis was too perfect.
With a record number of student votes this election, the overwhelming majority said they wanted Karl Wing, a junior in political science, as their new USUAA president for the 2008-09 school year, with Tyler Eggen as his vice president.
This was Wing's second attempt at the office.

Climate change could cause more flooding and droughts BUDAPEST, Hungary - Scientists predicted April 10 that climate change in coming decades will cause more flooding in the Northern Hemisphere and droughts in some southern and arid zones. USUAA realized their election broke a record for the number of ballots they received after the April 8 and April 9 ballots were tallied.
Unofficially, 1,101 ballots were counted, beating the previous record of 1,054, according to an e-mail from Sarah Roberson, chair of the Election Board.

Stephen Haycox isn't merely accomplished; he's distinguished.
The history professor, author and UAA faculty member for 38 years was recently honored with the Distinguished Professor Award.
"UAA has never had a Distinguished Professor," said professor Jim Muller, a close colleague of Haycox's.

Use a stick, not a carrot on corporations So our legislators are looking at tax incentives for corporations that retain and create jobs in the United States. They're using the wrong approach. How about using the stick instead of the carrot? In lieu of rewarding good corporate behavior, they should be taxing the bad behavior of those corporations that outsource jobs for the purpose of avoiding taxation.

The expression "beating a dead horse" comes to mind upon the first listen to Clinic's newest full-length release, "Do It." Despite delivering their usual collection of harsh downbeats, fuzzy organ tones and cunningly strange vocals, Clinic's inability to reinvent their sound since 2002's "Walking with Thee" insists an eyebrow be raised in concern for the group's real musical credibility.

Parking Services holds photo contest UAA Parking Services is holding a photo contest, and the grand-prize winner will receive a 2008-2009 annual parking permit. Additional winners will receive semester parking permits. Parking Services seeks digital photos of a UAA landmark or building to be used in the design of the 08-09 UAA parking permit.

Sunday, March 30 Student pukes in lot 12:53 a.m. -- While patrolling, an officer noticed an individual leaning out of a car and vomiting. The car experienced a mechanical failure as the driver and their passenger were being checked out. The car was left in the service lot in housing overnight.

Chide Drivers who caused accidents during the spring snow for not slowing down, thereby creating hazards on the road, even though they must have recognized the conditions were equal to winter weather.

Vodka-maker Absolut apologizes for ads MEXICO CITY - The Absolut vodka company apologized April 5 for an ad campaign depicting the southwestern U.S. as part of Mexico amid angry calls for a boycott by U.S. consumers. The campaign, which promotes ideal scenarios under the slogan "In an Absolut World," showed a 1830s-era map when Mexico included California, Texas and other southwestern states.

Cooper invited to Collegiate Basketball Invitational UAA men's basketball All-American Luke Cooper has been invited to play in the second annual Collegiate Basketball Invitational all-star tournament, April 24-26 in Wadsworth, Ohio. The CBI gathers the top 64 seniors from NCAA Division II and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics schools - approximately 950 institutions - to play in a series of games to showcase their talents.

Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich definitely has a sense of timing, perhaps just not tact.
It's been whispered around town for a while now that Begich has had his eye on the Senate seat currently held by Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens. That's why it came as no real surprise to me that Begich immediately attached himself to the investigation of a possible ethics violation involving Stevens.
