Purdue University's Project Vulcan
studies and maps carbon dioxide (a key "greenhouse gas") at a much
finer scale and with greater frequency than has been achieved by
previous studies. According to the site, "We have built the entire
inventory on a common 10 km grid to facilitate atmospheric modeling.
Vulcan is available at the hourly timescale for the year 2002. In
addition to improvement in space and time resolution, Vulcan is
quantified at the level of fuel type, economic sub-sector, and
county/state identification." The map below shows a sample of the 10
km
data. Copyright Purdue University, used with permission. Click for

iPhone: The Future of Social Networking? Michael Arrington, founder of TechCrunch, offers some valuable insight into mobile social networking in a piece at Seeking Alpha, an investment site. The article keys in on what is required for effective mobile social networking. For starters it "requires a social network that has presence, location and contextual information about you. It needs to know where you are (via GPS or triangulation), if you are in business or personal mode, and similar information for the people around you." Arrington claims to have seen the future in a new startup, details of which he can't disclose, and feels we are on the verge of the next big app.
