Classes to Delight and Edify, and Farmers' Market Cancellation )
April 2008
  • Field Journaling Class with Pamela Burgess
  • A Terrific Three-Day Symposium at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden
  • Friend of Theodore Payne,

Find your inner artist with Pamela Burgess, TPF's first Artist-in-Residence, as you explore the world of native plants through an entirely new medium other than soil and sweat. See below for details.

Feel like spending three gratifying days at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden? Here's your chance: "Out of the Wild and Into the Garden," a symposium on knowing and growing California native plants. To find out more, see below.

And last but not least, if you were planning on cruising by the TPF booth at the Hollywood Farmers' Market this Sunday, April 13: DON'T. TPF will not be at the market that day, as staff and volunteers will be docenting for our 5th Annual Native Plant Garden Tour instead.

Field Journaling Class with Pamela Burgess

Create an out-of-the-ordinary field journal with Pamela Burgess, an artist whose work re-visions the natural world through shadow and light, shape and space. Delve into the field journaling process with Pamela and, who knows, you might feel like Joseph Banks, Captain Cook's botanist that documented the fantastic flora of the lands Cook was exploring.

Using the TPF gardens as inspiration and source material, Pamela will guide you in the selection and interpretation of three plant specimens through a series of sketches and descriptive writings; these will form the opening pages of your Field Journal. No experience in art or writing is necessary for you to create a souvenir of your time in the field that delights the eye and mind. . . honest!

Bring a brown bag lunch, digital camera (if you like), hat and water, and meet at the picnic benches under the sycamore trees. (If it rains, meet in the Art Gallery.) All materials included. For teens and adults; class size limited to 9. Fee: $55 members; $65 non- members.

A Terrific Three-Day Symposium at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden

Rancho Santa Ana's symposium "Out of the Wild and Into the Garden" will be held April 16-19 and will feature 18 notable speakers, a silent plant auction (both the auction and the plants will be mute), a private (as in exclusive, as opposed to gregarious) plant sale, and more food than you can eat, plus opportunities to socialize. This is more than an educational seminar -- it's an EVENT!

Can't make it for the entire seminar? No problem! You may register for a day or days of your choice. Visit the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden web site at: http://www.rsabg.org/. From there, click on the link under the heading "Horticulture Symposium, April 2008" for all the details.

Special Extension of the early registration fee for everyone citing this TPF email between now and Saturday, April 12th at 7:00 p.m. Questions? Call Cotton Coslett at (909) 625-8767 ext. 224.
